Motivation

Scholarly biographical encyclopedia covering ~19000 historical American figures. Online access is subscription only, sadly, but nonsubcribers see enough of the entry to at least clearly identify the subject and confirm they're listed. This would be a very useful complement to our other identifiers for national biographical dictionaries (UK, Canada, NZ, Australia, Wales, etc). Andrew Gray (talk) 20:01, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

If you'd prefer we could use the underlying URL format (eg 1601761); both resolve to the same place and we can construct either with the same ID numbers. In general, though, while it's using the DOI as a URL, the DOI is for the article and not the person - we couldn't use DOI (P356) on Walt Whitman (Q81438) to point to this article.
