Awarded for period[edit]

Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Generic

Descriptionperiod during which the achievement must have been made to be eligible for an award
Data typePoint in time
Domainawards
Example
Motivation

Sometimes, awards are awarded for an event that happened in a determined period of time. Examples:

We currently do not have any way to express that. point in time (P585) should to the date the award was awarded, which is different.

Notes
  • Logically, the value should be a date range, not a point in time. But most of the time, the value will probably be a calendar time, so that should work just fine.
  • A more general: "applies to period" property may be useful. An example: Annual reports for a company which could be a relevant reference for statements. How do we say "2015 annual report" (published in 2016) ? However I fear a general property would sound too vague, leading to potential misuse.

Discussion
  • Ok "for period" is actually a pretty neat label, if we want to make the property more general :). Would not be just for events in that case though (see my annual report example above). --Zolo (talk) 16:07, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Zolo: Please follow the standard format where examples are listed in the template. ChristianKl (talk) 06:42, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Done, I do not think it helps undestanding this proposal, but ok --Zolo (talk) 14:50, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@GerardM: You seem to work a lot with awards. What do you think about the proposed property? Do you have suggestions for improvement? ChristianKl (talk) 06:43, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It is imho redundant. The current best practice is to have a "Point in time" associated with an award. An award is not the same as a season of a competition. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 10:31, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
point in time (P585) is supposed to be used for the date an event happens, so in the case of an award, the date an award is awarded that is not what this property is about. As said above, the 1989 oscards were awarded in 1990. --Zolo (talk) 12:28, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In that case all the awards that have only a year with point of time need a different property. I stick with my point that awards that include a year are not about an award but about a competition. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 17:52, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This proprty should not change anything to the way we use point in time (P585). point in time (P585) should always give the date the award was awarded, accurate to the day when possible, to the year otherwise.
Awards that include a year may usually be the result of a competition but they are not in themselves a competition. Or more accurately, you can say that "Academy Award for Best Director" can be defined in two ways: 1) a competition between all nominated directors and as 2) award received by the winner. It is actually definition 2) that is used in Wikidata, as can be seen by the subclass of (P279) structure and by the use in award received (P166). And we need a way to say that "87th Academy Awards" honor films released in 2014. That's the purpose of this property. --Zolo (talk) 14:48, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
What is the argument? This fails our best practice. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 18:16, 23 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In general I would recommend you to use {{O}} when you do oppose the creation of a property. "Point in time" refers to the time when the award was awarded. This isn't necessarily the time frame for which the person who receives the award gets honored. 62nd Academy Awards (Q910864) has a "Point in time" in 1990 but awarded for period (P4566) in 1989 and there was no attempt to express 1989 with current properties in the example item.
