Motivation

Yale Center for British Art (Q6352575) is the largest collection of British art outside the United Kingdom. YCBA LOD (Q34478116) was published in 2013 in CIDOC CRM and now there are current efforts to contribute it to the AAC (http://americanartcollaborative.org). YCBA LOD includes:

At an AAC meeting 2w ago I talked to Emmanuelle Delmas-Glass (YCBA Collections Data Manager) and Katherine Thornton (Yale library; Wikidata and WikiCite enthusiast) and they are very interested to put their data in Wikidata. So this property is the first step towards YCBA data donations.

Agent Export[edit]

Vladimir: I got 954 persons from YCBA's SPARQL endpoint (see above). This seems incomplete.

Emmanuelle: I am currently working on identifying the YCBA local heroes, i.e. object related actors (artists, but also publishers of prints and others who participated in the creation of the works, so no dealers and other lenders unless they were also artists) who are not listed in any authority that we usually consult (ULAN, ODNB, LOC) but for whom YCBA has some biographical information that makes them somewhat identifiable and hopefully useful to other institutions. ((eg 2456 Henry Phillip Hope)) Just to give you an idea of the numbers we are working with, we currently have 5,386 object related actors, 3,422 of whom we matched against Wikidata, and 3,091 against ULAN. I think for now we are only talking about "YCBA agent ID" but I will discuss this with the Yale University Art Gallery soon ((with the view of publishing a wider set of artists that are somehow related to Yale museums and galleries)).

Vladimir to @Edgartdata: So now you should prepare a dataset export, with cols eg:

  • YCBA ID, name, dates, short description (e.g. British painter), WD ID, ULAN ID.

Maybe put it on google sheet? Then:

  • get WD-ULAN coreference from beacon

Your WD & ULAN IDs are very valuable since they increase the chance of matching your artists, and they can extend the WD-ULAN coreference. If we consider "YCBA left join BEACON on ULAN or WD", we could make a decision table like this:

YCBA dataset BEACON
YCBA ULAN WD ULAN WD WHAT
1 0 0 Mix-n-Match (make a subset for crowd-sourced matching)
1 0 1 add YCBA to WD item
1 1 0 1 1 find WD item by ULAN, then add YCBA to the item
1 1 0 0 0 Mix-n-Match (make a subset for crowd-sourced matching), preserve ULAN
1 1 1 1 1 add YCBA to WD item
1 1 1 1 0 check ULAN match
1 1 1 0 1 check ULAN match
1 1 1 0 0 add YCBA and ULAN to WD item
