- Motivation
It is sort of possible to do this currently using has effect (P1542) but not ideally, at this project chat discussion new items were suggested. An alternative to this would be properties for "structures damaged"/"structures destroyed", "vehicles damaged"/"vehicles destroyed", etc with quantity datatype but this way is more flexible as it allows for things like
.
I think more specific property labels would be better but I can't formulate them at the moment. This should not be confused with the existing cost of damage (P2630). Thryduulf (talk: local | en.wp | en.wikt) 20:52, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
- Discussion
Comment Should be named so as to not imply that individual buildings, etc, should be listed (the inverse should apply there). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:04, 23 May 2016 (UTC)
- Actually I think this property should be able to list individual notable buildings/structures as that keeps all the information about the damage/destruction caused in a single place. Requiring separate, differently structured queries for individually notable and non-notable structures seems very illogical to me. Thryduulf (talk: local | en.wp | en.wikt) 22:31, 23 May 2016 (UTC)
- that would not be "[keeping] all the information about the damage/destruction caused in a single place", because such information is already on items abuot individual buildings (where it belongs). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:31, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
- Damage caused to a building by an event is information that belongs equally to the building and to the event. The only way to resolve this (without transclusion, symlinks or similar) is to have duplication or to leave one incomplete. Personally I think the former is the best for both users and reusers. Support, although I would like the example in "damaged" changed to list the individual battleships. Also, I would like one example with quantity (P1114) and one with individual items per property. --Srittau (talk) 20:59, 11 June 2016 (UTC)
Comment I think it might be better with Quantity type and using the items damaged/destroyed as units, i.e. damaged: 3 battleship (Q182531), destroyed: 364 building (Q41176). Also, the description should be refined to make clear whether it related to the list of items (and then it should name particular items) or quantity of items (and then it should use quantity with units). --Laboramus (talk) 20:17, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
- How would that work with say agricultural land (Q3395383) 500 hectare (Q35852)? Thryduulf (talk) 21:48, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
Support. But if say only three boats were destroyed and we have items on these boats, the links should lead straight to the items dedicated to those individual boats. Thierry Caro (talk) 09:07, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
@Thryduulf, Srittau, Thierry Caro: Done. Feel free to change the damaged example into an example with actual ships. --Lymantria (talk) 07:04, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
@Thryduulf, Srittau, Laboramus, Thierry Caro: I was going over archived Freebase entries on earthquakes and noticed that they had properties such as "structures_destroyed" and structured_damaged. I think these are exact equivalent of these 2 newly created properties (since they both refer to physical structures/buildings).--DarTar (talk) 19:37, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
- I had the first attempt to use the property for earthquakes (consistently with Freebase) quickly reverted. See my notes to the author of the revert and please chime in if you have additional thoughts. Thanks. --DarTar (talk) 06:27, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
- I have answered in the talk page. --ValterVB (talk) 08:08, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
