Motivation

It is sort of possible to do this currently using has effect (P1542) but not ideally, at this project chat discussion new items were suggested. An alternative to this would be properties for "structures damaged"/"structures destroyed", "vehicles damaged"/"vehicles destroyed", etc with quantity datatype but this way is more flexible as it allows for things like

⟨ 1996 Docklands bombing (Q4591331)  View with Reasonator View with SQID ⟩ damaged (P3081) View with SQID ⟨ South Quay DLR station ⟩

.

I think more specific property labels would be better but I can't formulate them at the moment. This should not be confused with the existing cost of damage (P2630). Thryduulf (talk: local | en.wp | en.wikt) 20:52, 12 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion
  •  Comment Should be named so as to not imply that individual buildings, etc, should be listed (the inverse should apply there). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:04, 23 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • Actually I think this property should be able to list individual notable buildings/structures as that keeps all the information about the damage/destruction caused in a single place. Requiring separate, differently structured queries for individually notable and non-notable structures seems very illogical to me. • that would not be "[keeping] all the information about the damage/destruction caused in a single place", because such information is already on items abuot individual buildings (where it belongs). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:31, 24 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
        • Damage caused to a building by an event is information that belongs equally to the building and to the event. The only way to resolve this (without transclusion, symlinks or similar) is to have duplication or to leave one incomplete. Personally I think the former is the best for both users and reusers. @Thryduulf, Srittau, Thierry Caro: ✓ Done. Feel free to change the damaged example into an example with actual ships. --Lymantria (talk) 07:04, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Thryduulf, Srittau, Laboramus, Thierry Caro: I was going over archived Freebase entries on earthquakes and noticed that they had properties such as "structures_destroyed" and structured_damaged. I think these are exact equivalent of these 2 newly created properties (since they both refer to physical structures/buildings).--DarTar (talk) 19:37, 27 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I had the first attempt to use the property for earthquakes (consistently with Freebase) quickly reverted. See my notes to the author of the revert and please chime in if you have additional thoughts. Thanks. --DarTar (talk) 06:27, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I have answered in the talk page. --ValterVB (talk) 08:08, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
