Motivation[edit]
Apparently there currently is no good property to model what some kind of protection protects against.
Many data items currently use facet of (P1269) for this e.g. fall protection (Q23580296)facet of (P1269)falling (Q333495), which I don't think is quite accurate.
In other cases in opposition to (P5004) is misused for this despite it only being meant for social movements e.g. sun protection (Q97704306)in opposition to (P5004)sunlight (Q193788).
Sometimes has cause (P828) is used which is also clearly not the best way to express this, e.g. radiation protection (Q1574099)has cause (P828)ionizing radiation (Q186161).
Sometimes quite awkward constructions are used like antivirus software (Q93249)has use (P366)removal (Q23009442)
So I think introducing a "protects against" property would really help this important aspect of protection subclasses (of which there currently are 55)

Discussion[edit]
- Comment Would this at all be able to be modeled by Wikidata:Property_proposal/reduces? – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Wd-Ryan (talk • contribs).
- I don't think that this would properly express the semantics. Protection mechanisms often seek to prevent something completely from happening (as opposed to just reducing it). E.g. fire protection aims to prevent fires, theft protection aims to prevent theft. --Push-f (talk) 16:21, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
- Interesting — just the other day I was looking for a way to connect special educational needs (Q63861526) to special education (Q212105), and tried to find a property like "addresses". I ended up resorting to special education (Q212105)has cause (P828)special educational needs (Q63861526), but was not satisfied with it. I'm not sure "reduces" would be the right term, but perhaps we could find a wider concept that subsumes "protects against", "prevents", "reduces", "addresses", "counters", etc.? Or do you think I should create yet another property proposal? :) --Waldyrious (talk) 06:35, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for bringing that up. I agree that a more general "addresses" property would be better. I think I will withdraw this proposal. --Push-f (talk) 13:11, 18 October 2022 (UTC)

- Support Looks like a useful property. Would "prevents" be a better label, though? (Or, at least, an acceptable alias?). — The Erinaceous One 🦔 08:14, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
- No I don't think that "prevents" would be a good label because e.g. sun protection (Q97704306) does not prevent sunlight and copy protection (Q15738686) also often does not prevent copying (Q1156791) because copy protection mechanisms can often be easily circumvented. But yes I think having "prevents" as an alias would probably make sense. --Push-f (talk) 08:48, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
Withdrawn. I withdraw this proposal in favor of the more general and useful Wikidata:Property proposal/addresses. --Push-f (talk) 13:59, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
