statistical leader

[edit]

Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Sports

Descriptionleader of a sports tournament in one of statistical qualities (points, assists, rebounds etc.)
Data typeItem
Domainprobably only humans, maybe also teams
ExampleFIBA EuroBasket 2015 (Q2360003)Pau Gasol (Q193052) (with qualifier criterion used (P1013)points per game (Q7208402))
Motivation

We need to include this information somehow in items about tournaments. In a perfect world I would also include the value (for example in proposal template: 25.6), but don't think we have something suitable. The closest, what I found, is numeric value (P1181). Discussion
  • What is a statistical leader? Your description should actually describe the concept, or in your proposal point to the item associated. --Izno (talk) 11:25, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Izno: I do suck in describing things :) Well, statistical leader is my attemt to generalize things, so that we don't need many properties, but can live with one. Statistical leader is person, who has scored the most points/goals in tournament (in football, ice hockey), has the most points per game in tournament (basketball) etc. For basketball I was going to use it also for most rebounds per game and most assists per game (see infobox at enwiki). I have answered your question? Maybe "Tournament leader" will be better? But that can probably mean also something else. --Edgars2007 (talk) 17:38, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Weak opposeIt seems to me like the description of the item doesn't explain to the average user what the item is about. It might be more useful to have more specific properties that are more clear. ChristianKl (talk) 12:01, 14 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@ChristianKl: I tried to do my best, changing label and description. I would really like to stick to one property, not splitting things. When I was proposing a pretty specific property for sports tournaments (MVP), I got some oppose and suggestions to use broader :) About "to the average user what the item is about" - well, I probably won't understand almost nothing from chemistry/biology properties, no matter what labels or description says. And I am an average user :) --Edgars2007 (talk) 16:26, 16 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Quite a lot of people on the street care for ice hockey tournament results and basketball results but don't care for more complicated chemistry/biology properties. I'm no sports fan, so you are right that it's not central that I understand what the term means but I'm not sure that the core audience does. Maybe it would be good to have opinions of other people who deal with sports data. Do we have a Wikiproject for sports that you can ping here, to get more domain expert input?
How about "top player" as a name for the property? ChristianKl (talk) 20:54, 16 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
"statistical leader" would have the advantage that it would allow the qualifier to specify what it means in the context of the competition. Which type of statistics being used depends on the competition. The general winner would obviously not be added using this property.

Can this apply for top goalscorer of a league? Xaris333 (talk) 17:51, 8 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

As I already said in Project chat - yes. --Edgars2007 (talk) 18:58, 8 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
