- Motivation
- Suggestion from Wikidata:Requests for comment/Make family member properties gender neutral to replace stepfather/stepmother. Saving gender in the property name is not needed, especially not for those properties, as those aren't even biological relations, but based on marriage. The property spouse (P26) is also gender-neutral. Merging them to a new property will be relatively easy, as they are both not really that often used and no Wikipedia is currently using the properties in articles. Oppose current stepfather/stepmother matches father/mother. I don't recall any issues with using the current ones.

But it is possible to have one father and one stepfather[1], it is even possible to have a non-binary/genderqueer stepparent. The current properties don't match spouse (P26). - I think P26 isn't relevant. An advantage of having separate properties is also that it makes it easier to determine who is being replaced.

- Do you have a sample for this ("gender of the replaced ..")? I don't quite get the second part either. How would you do that?
--- Jura 15:55, 3 December 2016 (UTC)- A stepparent is simply the spouse of one's parent. If the parents divorce and one of the parents remarry with another person, then the child has a stepparent. This stepparent can be male, female or non-binary/genderqueer. You can only determine who is being replaced with the current system for heterosexual people, it wouldn't work correctly for bisexual people that first had a heterosexual marriage and later a homosexual marriage. - For corner cases, you can use "relative" = stepparent.
