I dont know of this is the right place to post this, but someone has added Artists Rights Society (Q4801318) in the "member of" post (P463) seemingly en bloc for a number of artists that have not been (nor could have been) members, such as Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. The Artists Rights Society is an American intellectual rights organiztion founded in 1987, ie. many years after these artists had died.
Is it possible to batch delete all entries related to Q4801318? I understand they'd have to reentered in thos bioghraphies where they so apply, but surely it's better to have no info about membership than false and misleading entries?
(Btw., I've removed Q4801318 from the biographies mentioned above). Asav (talk) 17:53, 10 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- @Spinster: in two entries mentioned above, you seem to have imported them from somewhere [1].

- Yes, this seems to have happened on June 10 to June 12, amending 244 entries. There may be more erroneus edits, of course. Btw, given Spinster's edit history, this is no doubt an error made in good faith. Nevertheless, is there a mechanism to batch remove all Q4801318 entries for the time being? - Hello everyone! Apologies for my delayed reply - I was taking a vacation. Yes, I mass added those statements from this list in my early days on Wikidata. I've always been aware that this was not an optimal import and modelling - I think they must be modelled with the represented by (P1875) property. I just never got around to correcting them, but I will do so in the upcoming days! FYI - the Artist Rights Society IS correct in stating that artists like Munch, Picasso and Braque are represented by them. The various national copyright collectives work together internationally and refer to each other when they are contacted about an artist that is not in their own jurisdiction. For deceased artists: the artists' heirs usually are members, as I think they often still receive significant income from fees paid for using images of work of the deceased artists. Copyright collectives' websites even (sometimes erroneously) claim representation of artists that are in the public domain; an extra reason why it's quite relevant for us on Wikidata to track this type of membership here, so that we can doublecheck these errors of theirs and flag them. Hannolans knows a lot about this as well, and may be able to provide some input too. Cheers! Spinster 💬 07:47, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- Thanks for your response! I suspected as much, and was actually about to suggest using "represented by" instead. But I'm still in doubt here as to all the names on the list. Munch, for example, died in 1944, so for all intents and purposes, his works are public domain now. Don't you think it's better (ie. safer) to just delete Q4801318 from these entries and add them manually where appropriate? Asav (talk) 08:10, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- I went ahead and re-processed the list at https://www.arsny.com/mostwanted/ editing and updating all affected items like this, with OpenRefine and PetScan. There are indeed a few (just a small percentage) of artists in the list who have died before 1947, but I'd also argue strongly in favor of keeping the represented by (P1875) property there, for two reasons:
- 1. As an art historian, I'd say it's historically interesting and relevant to know that they were once represented by a copyright collective and/or that their heirs kept a close eye on copyrights of the artist;
- 2. In some cases, artists have produced/published work in the United States, which might mean that even if they died before 1947, their works published in the US are still copyrighted, and even for quite a long time still. Piet Mondrian (Q151803) is a notable example of that.
- I hope this helps! Cheers, Spinster 💬 06:49, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
