Task/s: The bot fetches common names from Wikidata statements for a given language that do not exist in the label/description header yet and synchronizes them
Code: GitHub
Function details:
This bot has a straightforward task. It fetches statements on common names in a given language from items on taxa, where these common names are not yet part of the header of an item.
The common names are synchronized with the item header. Allowing Wikidata users to search for species by their common names (Only the header is indexed to feed the text search field.)
The bot is built on the Wikidata Integrator Framework --Andrawaag (talk) 21:22, 10 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
- Strong support This will dramatically improve the discoverability of many items about species that are currently only searchable via their binomial or their English name and it would be particularly valuable for contributors and data consumers whose primary language is not English. I expect this bot to run routinely to check when new well-sourced taxon common name (P1843) statements exist and populate the missing labels/aliases.--DarTar (talk)
- Strong support My group is currently working to increase species articles in es.wiki and we have this problem where taxon name has recently changed and we have a hard time finding it/create a item thinking it does not exist to find out later it already does. This will help us a lot.--Lmalena (talk) 23:05, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
- Strong support Having searchable common names for taxa in Wikidata will assist me with linking species with biodiversity literature that gives information on them via their common name. Ambrosia10 (talk) 23:29, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
- How do you plan to let the bot act in cases like Carcinus maenas (Q27779), where the Dutch label is "strandkrab" while taxon common name (P1843) mentions Dutch trivial name "Strandkrab" - only differing by capitalization? Lymantria (talk) 09:09, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
- The bot takes statements with references and copies those to the header. The bot will not filter, nor change any of those common names. If there are two statements with references, one mentioning "strandkrab" and the other mentioning "Strandkrab", both will end up in the header. --Andrawaag (talk) 09:28, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
