This page serves to coordinate the process of deprecating of (P642). See also User:Lucas Werkmeister/P642 considered harmful.
Migration process[edit]
- Identify a use case (a set of statements that can be handled the same way). (Check if an already identified use case can reasonably be expanded.)
- Identify a new handling approach for the case, and make sure it makes sense for all query results.
- Get consensus on the new handling approach:
- If the use case involves specific main statement properties, seek input on the talk pages of those properties, and of any associated WikiProjects.
- Once consensus is achieved, if a new property is required, create a property proposal. For new properties, work with speakers of major languages to ensure accurate and unambiguous labels are in place before migrating.
- Migrate uses to new handling; automate where practical.
- Implement constraints to dissuade future use of of (P642) for the given case, and provide constraint clarification (P6607) explaining the new handling.

Property labels[edit]
The associated table lists labels in some major languages (currently English, German, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Japanese and Chinese) for a number of properties either affected by or created as part of this deprecation effort. The idea is to get an overview of the translation process, as well as a comparison of the appropriateness of those translations (feedback from editors fluent in or at least familiar with these languages will be appreciated).

Redundant statements[edit]
There may be Wikidata best practices recommending certain redundant claims; check out what applies to country (P17).
Certain items have multiple country (P17) claims, contradicting its documented purpose of describing the location. It may be desirable to either remove or ignore some of the redundant ones, before using the values of the remaining ones for other statements.

Interpret country (P17) to define values of other statements[edit]
