Three poplars in the coats of arms of Gipuzkoa

Gipuzkoa (Q95010) is a province in the Basque Country with a very good reference system on genealogy. Starting in the 1500s and ending in 1901 the information of baptisms, weddings and deaths covers mostly all the population living there in those years. There is a database called MendezMende where most of the data has been digitalized, and this is also accesible via OpenData from the Basque Government's dokuklik initative.

Genealogy research is of interest for many people looking for it's own roots. Gipuzkoa is an interesting case study because we have two surnames for (nearly) all entries, allowing to research easily matrilineal and patrilineal genealogies. Furthermore, lots of people around South America and even the Philippines have roots in Gipuzkoa, due to the massive colonization process started from there.

Rule 2.0 of Wikidata:Notability allows to add information about people if we can find them using serious and publicly available references. So MendezMende is an opportunity to explore the capabilities of Wikibase to show genealogical information. Within this project we will try to show which are the possibilities Wikidata is offering for genealogies.

In addition, a database of this kind offers very interesting information to Digital Humanities researchers. We could easily study migrations, demographics and even wedding costumes using this bunch of data.
