Notes[edit]
- Library Carpentry has a Wikidata lesson in development (details above)
- Wiki Ed Wikidata workshops and courses starting in July
- If others know of and want to share other training opportunities please do
- Merrilee Proffitt - describing volunteer activities with Wikimedia
- For folks interested in the intersection between Wikimedia projects and libraries you can join the Wikimedia and Libraries User Group https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_and_Libraries_User_Group
- Email list, E.g. recent discussion getting libraries represented in Wikidata
- Also Facebook Group
- Wikimania (Stockholm meeting), CFP is open until the end of May. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2019
- Encourage others to submit if you are unable to yourself.
- Goals and desired outcomes for the Wikidata Affinity Group (can we call it WAG?)
- Discussion today and then condense it into an outline, later finalize this draft
- Check in every three months to see if the goals need to be adjusted.
- goals and desired outcomes for the Wikidata Affinity Group
- Paul Burley
- How to help other institutions begin working with Wikidata
- What are the skill levels needed? (detailed in link above)
- Would this be sequential, building up to advance?
- A list to make clear what you would need to know based on your goals.
- Scott MacLeod what is the role of html to make such lists
- Mediawiki for versions, editing
- Making interoperable with Wikibase (SF-sorry, my audio is cutting out)
- Here’s the MediaWiki visual editor - https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:VisualEditor - which is in development, and will work with HTML - hyper text markup language (the code for web pages). As a visual editor, and interoperable with Wikidata, it will make lists and editing Wikidata too potentially easy, via HTML and front end Wikipedia article pages
- Jeff Young - https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Listeria (from chat) as an option
- Harvard: If it's not out of scope, might we want to include an item in here about basic understanding of wikidata in the context of the wiki community/ecosystem and its norms?
- In scope, the goal of integrating Library data with Wikidata while respect norms is a goal
- Meg Wacha - important to make competencies clear, and also to make sure that folks engaging with this work aren’t limited to the Harvards and Cornells,
- How can we be institutionally diverse, what open source tools and community support is required to make this work possible at scale e.g. public libraries to participate
- Hilary - What pathways are available for institutions without teams of developers
- Michelle Rago - (from chat) In addition to examples about adding data to Wikidata, I would like to see the ability to get data out of wikidata to power other websites represented.
- Hilary - Some of this will be covered in using Wikidata via QA and Sinopia. Can also make clear other ways, e.g. data dumps, APIs.
- Ongoing support and coding network - and re Wikidata in multiple languages, for libraries +
- Is there a need for networking beyond the WAG meetings?
- Will Sinopia have lookups for Wikidata?
- Currently working on this. A definite goal.
- Some of the goals are seed form
- Harvard (from chat) Re: diversity of institution types: How do we learn more about what smaller institutions need in order to participate in the work we're interested in pursuing?
- Affinity group could be a forum for smaller groups could share their work, and what tools were missing, what hindrances did they face
- Chris - (from chat) Hi Harvard Room, I’m hoping we can discuss the diverse needs of other libraries in the Library Carpentry Wikidata lesson development :)
- Joy - LD4 can provide the model for other libraries on how Wikidata can be incorporated into cataloging & metadata and also in the discovery tools.
- Focus on the competencies
- Meg - acknowledge the communities and resources already in the Wikidata community, become part of the community
- Define what LD4’s goals. Will this work be given back to the community to engage with
- For instance in the IR work, open source development occurred, and when there was a technical gap, vendors swooped in. How can we head this off?
- Hilary - plan to document carefully, outline implementation paths, stumbling blocks.
- Harvard (via chat) we're glad that these venues are open to everyone, but should we be inviting folks to represent those perspectives specifically?
(Apologies if you've already thought about this.)
- Hilary - interested in bringing in smaller public archives projects.
- Scott - unfolding brainstorming, can we keep the Outcomes’ document even after the synthesis of the outline for next steps?
- Joy- (from chat) To let the wider community to test drive Sinopia sandbox as promised, would be one way to include the wider community.
- Hilary still under active development, will follow up on who will have access when
- F. Tim Knight (from chat) I don't know a lot about this project but my colleague Stacy Allison-Cassin sent a note around about the Wikidata Shape Expressions project which might be of interest https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_ShEx
- Data shape references for domains being modeled
- Hilary will share with WAG how to get involved
