'Economic sector' Property

[edit]

I added this so we could break down the balance sheet numbers by industry and by Industrial/Agricultural/Service sector. We can use subclass of (P279) to classify some 'sectors' as industry so we can get a total for this class.

'Type' property

[edit]

I added a 'type' qualifier so we can break down the balance sheet totals into all their line items, using the instance of (P31) property.

Holding, Shareholder and Accounting rules

[edit]

I'm not sure if these properties are needed for Wikidata integration. These statistics are not used in the original model. Mcnabber091 (talk) 16:22, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've taken off Shareholder and Holding as these are company properties but not economic properties.
Having 'Accounting rules' as a qualifier is needed to record how the companies and countries calculated their Assets, Liabilities, Revenue etc. These vary by country and over time. Filceolaire (talk) 16:36, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Employment by sector

[edit]

Separate properties for employment in each sector are proposed. I think this could be done better with one property and a qualifier. Filceolaire (talk) 16:50, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed 'Top 10' properties

[edit]

The proposed properties for 'Top 10 cities' and 'Top 10 counties' are not really practical as properties. These should be done as queries - reviewing all the cities or counties, ordering them by population and discarding all but the top 10. Filceolaire (talk) 16:53, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Currency

[edit]

Some of the properties listed look like they are aspects of the currency rather than the Country:

  • Exchange rate
  • Money supply
  • Interest rate

Am I right or have I misunderstood? Filceolaire (talk) 14:27, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

These are statistics will all be used in the country articles. The exchange rate will be useful to convert data denominated in a currency other than USD. The money supply and interest rate will be in the monetary policy section Mcnabber091 (talk) 17:50, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The subject of every statement on a Wikidata page is the page. Is the subject of these properties the USA or is it the US dollar? The UK or the £? France or the Euro?
Is it:
  • France =>Exchange rate => $1.33 or Euro => Exchange rate => $1.33
  • France => Money Supply => Euro123456789 or Euro => Money supply => Euro123456789
  • France => Interest rate => 1% or Euro => Interest rate => 1%

Either way the statistics can be collected and used in articles, it's just a matter of getting the semantics right. This is the stuff that gets argued over in the property proposal reviews. Filceolaire (talk) 21:51, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

US Federal debt, revenue, expenses, budget balance

[edit]

These would be better as generic properties for Debt, Revenue, Expenses, Budget Balance. You can tell which Country, Region or Company they apply to from the page where they appear. OK? Filceolaire (talk) 14:30, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I will consolidate these statistics. Thank you, Mcnabber091 (talk) 17:51, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Employment

[edit]

Rather than having three properties for employment (Agriculture, Industry, Service) we could have one Employment property with a qualifier to say if it is an instance of (P31) 'Agriculture', 'Industry', or 'Service'. This qualifier can also be used to divide up exports, revenues etc by sector and can be used for to itemise stats by industries as well as by sector. OK? Filceolaire (talk) 14:35, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Go ahead and make the change. I'm not sure exactly what you mean but it sound like a good idea. Mcnabber091 (talk) 17:52, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done.
using qualifiers means is that we can use one property in multiple ways. For example:
  • Illinois <= item
    • Employment '1,000,000' <= property with number value
      • economic sector 'total' <= qualifier property with item value
    • Employment '100,000'
      • economic sector 'agriculture'
    • Employment '400,000'
      • economic sector 'Industry'
    • Employment '500,000'
      • economic sector 'Service'

Hope this helps. Filceolaire (talk) 22:55, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Is it ok for us to scrape the statistics from Yahoo and Forbes? Are there copyright issues? Do we need to go to the various government and company sites for this info to get round this?

This was raised with the WMF legal team in July but there's no answer yet - meta:Talk:Legal_and_Community_Advocacy#Clarifying_database_copyright_issues_in_link_with_Wikidata.

Taking the info from organisations like Forbes and Yahoo is likely to be a bigger deal than governments or museums - we are basicly taking business from them. Is there an alternative source for the data? Filceolaire (talk) 22:45, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

SEC filings, Form 10k. I'm not sure where we can find top ranked list.Mcnabber091 (talk) 23:09, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We don't need someone else's "top ranked" list. We can list every country, region and company for which we have data or give the users the option to limit what is displayed by revenue, type, or a dozen other parameters. Filceolaire (talk) 23:14, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This project seems important

[edit]

There are a lot of projects being proposed on Wikidata and I just wanted to comment by saying that maintaining a database of economic properties for regions and other classifications should be a priority. This project seems to me to be a good start on something very big which would have a major world impact. Blue Rasberry (talk) 20:12, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Submitting the property list

[edit]

What else do we need to do before submitting this proposal list? Mcnabber091 (talk) 18:51, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ready to submit the property list?

[edit]

What else needs to be improved or added before we submit the property list? Filceolaire, if you give me the green light I will go ahead and do it. Here is a link to the property request page: http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Property_proposal/Place Regards Mcnabber091 (talk) 19:06, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think these properties are ready. The requests should be posted to the Economy section of the "Term" page - here: Wikidata:Property_proposal/Term#Economics.2F_Wirtschaft.2F_Economie.

Just post the three tablesFilceolaire (talk) 19:20, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I posted the tables and they quickly got deleted. We need to do it in the exact format listed on that page for each individual statistic. I would say that is the main job right now. Once again thanks for your help so far. Mcnabber091 (talk) 22:50, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Global Economic Map property proposals submitted!

[edit]

http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Property_proposal/Term

Filceolaire, do we need to add the qualifiers in there? And how do the property proposals look? Mcnabber091 (talk) 19:27, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Stock market

[edit]

There's an error in the company table. stock exchange (P414) is missing, and ticker symbol is a qualifier for that. The ticker may vary on different exchanges. See HSBC. Danrok (talk) 23:02, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Properties section improved

[edit]

All of the data for the G.E.M. and their sources are now mapped out on the property page. I also have proposed many new properties here: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Property_proposal/Economics#Population_growth. We need editors to review these new property proposals and address any problems with them. Mcnabber091 (talk) 07:33, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
