Translate extension

The main page should be moved to translate extension. It shouldn't be too hard given the structure, normal page translation without templates should do it and then some copy and paste will be needed. Nemo 18:58, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

I think this is what should be done. When I created Template:MainPageLanguages, the translate extension was not enabled. However, with Translate, outdated translations are marked red (fuzzy). This usually helps to fix them, but I think fuzzy text on the Main Page won't look so good. πr2 (tc) 16:29, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
Is there any way that that could be fixed? Maybe with CSS? --Yair rand (talk) 11:05, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
Yes, with something like .page-Wikidata<put every translation of the page name here> .mw-translate-fuzzy { background-color: #FFF; } in the global Common.css. Translators can then override it in their own Common.css

Why should we translate the Main Page? Commons does not translate the main page too. --Sk!d (talk) 11:45, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Wikidata, like Commons, is multi-lingual; actually I would prefer for Commons' main page to be translated too, though I'm not really familiar with how Commons decided this.--Jasper Deng (talk) 19:25, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
Unlike global guidelines like Wikidata:Notability there is no reason why the content should be the same in every languages. I would prefer it if the layout would be the same, but if e.g. a language have a language own Taskforce like Wikidata:Labels_and_descriptions_task_force/de and other languages don't have them this would be problem. Other languages might also set there focus different. If there will be something like "Item of the Day" this could be handled with templates just like on Commons. --Sk!d (talk) 20:12, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
Some Main Page contents are static, but could be translated, such as linking the introduction.--Jasper Deng (talk) 21:01, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
Note that Commons doesn't actually even have the extension enabled. --Yair rand (talk) 10:15, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Typo in "Welcome" header

The phrase "it centralizes access and management of structured data" should be "it centralizes access to and management of structured data"; "access...of" isn't grammatical. — SMcCandlish  Talk⇒ ɖכþ Contrib. 01:39, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

Number of items

Shall we add number of items {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}} in the main page, just like other wikimedia projects do?--Stevenliuyi (talk) 23:45, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

+1 --Kolja21 (talk) 04:07, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
✓ Done I made a slight change the header size since ours was much larger than other projects. Ours was 220, while the English Wikipedia's was 165 and Commons is 150 by comparison. I standarized it to "Welcome to Project," at the top like the others, and added the number of items we have, per your suggestion. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 17:36, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

January 4, 2013 news bit

I'm not sure we should be reporting the Q data entry number in the news.

  • January 4, 2013: Periphragella elisae, a species of sponge, is created as Wikidata's 2,500,000th item.

This is accurate to the extent that it is Q2500000, but we only have 2227453 that exist as of this writing. It's a bit misleading. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 17:42, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

Correct, and in the past I rephrased them for accuracy. I haven't edited this one because I believe it should be removed – increasing the Q number by 500,000 just isn't news anymore – but don't have the energy to get into a debate whether or not to remove one piece of non-news in the absence of true news. If anyone agrees that it should be removed, go for it. —WFC10:27, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
