Discussion with Telangana reorganisation experts[edit]
If there is anyone who has previously worked with Telangana district reorganisation, and also village/mandal related articles or data, it would be great to connect and coordinate. - Sure KC! Telugu Wikipedian Yarra Ramarao worked extensively on Telangana Reorganisation aspects in Telugu Wikipedia and User:Chaduvari worked on 2011 census data both in Wikidata and Wikipedia. I also contributed to the overall idea of improving information in village articles using census data and worked with the above-mentioned users. Participate in Coordinate Me 2024 and win gifts[edit]
Please participate in Coordinate Me 2024 during May 2024 and win gifts. Support in improving the quality of geographical coordinates for the villages of Andhra Pradesh. This helps improve maps in Wikipedia, and OpenStreetMap. As a first priority, add coordinates for revenue village entries using AP State GIS portal. This is very easy. From the required villages (Example query for Guntur district), search for the coordinates in AP State GIS portal using Geocode locator menu. You can use village name and mandal/district name if required. Click coordinate symbol in Measurement menu and move the mouse to the place name and copy the displayed coordinates. Paste these coordinates and edit to change the order and separate them with a comma. Add reference with "stated in" and value as "APSGISP" (Example addition) In the past Telugu wikipedian as part of photography contest, added coordinates using online sources such as Google. But these can not be transferred to Wikidata, as wikidata is CC-0 licensed. Currently fo Andhra pradesh, there are coordinate entries for about 5000 revenue villages out of 16000 revenue villages. Many of them also are defective due to import from various wikipedias without validation check. This activity is very helpful for improving maps on Wikipedia and also for providing OSM Telugu maps using wikidata mapping to OSM. Distinguishing census villages which are also gram panchayats[edit]
Fram a study of Andhra Pradesh Gram panchayat HQ database of Bharat Map Services, there are 10565 panchayats traceable to unique census villages out of 12591 panchayats in all. Thus there are 2026 panchyats which are not census villages. In Wikidata, we have only census villages and hamlets (mostly also instance of village in India). These are distinguished by the presence of 2011 Census code. As only 2/3 of all census villages have gram panchayats named after them, we need a way to distinguish them from other census villages, which are mainly farm lands or have residential areas which are part of near by gram panchayats. A panchayat is formed based on the requirement of having required population. The relation between gram panchayats and census villages has three possibilites.
- One panchayat covering two revenue villages (Modepalli and Nannurpadu in Addanki Mandal, Bapatla district).
- Several revenue villages being part of one panchayat primarily in Alluri Sitharamaraju district.
- One revenue village having several panchayats.Chintagunta palem, and Nutalapadu in Nutalapadu census village of Inkollu mandal, Bapatla district.
Gram panchayat have LGD body code, which is mapped to the census villages it covers. Till the time separate wikidata item is created for Gram panchyats, my proposal is to tag existing census villages which have associated panchayat with an instance of "village panchayat", in addition to instance of "village in India". As part of en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Andhra Pradesh/Coordinate Me 2024 project running in May 2024, we are adding the residential area location for census villages with Panchyats and census village geometric centre for others. Using the additional tag of village panchayat, helps us to know which are gram panchayats, when using the data with OSM and also performing quality checks based on the data between wikidata and OSM. OSM also requires the residential areas for village representation. Please discuss any objections or alternate suggestions in a week's time. ie. by May 17, 2024.
