Discussion[edit]

Landing page for people not registered[edit]

The trouble with making that the default landing page is that there then seems to be no way to get to the detailed editing page, whether one is logged in or not.
I have therefore switched the preferred URL formatter back to https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/$1, which is now what queries pick up. Eventually the links from items will also update, though the change may take time to propagate through. Jheald (talk) 18:45, 3 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I’m not sure what how the behavior changes over time but currently, https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/$1 seems to be publicly displayable, while https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/$1 redirects to a login page. (Example links: publicly available ancestors, login-required www) So… should I change the URL formatter to https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/$1? --Mormegil (talk) 12:54, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Mormegil: Normally I'd support linking to a publicly-dispayable, no-login-required page for a property ID; but in this case  Weak oppose to such a change. The displayable page is quite shiny, but as editors here it's the detailed page we really want -- with the details and links to the sources used, and with easy navigation around the family tree; rather than a page telling us who might have been President of the United States at that time.
I'd be okay going for the latter no-login page if it was easy to get from it to the detailed page (eg automatically, by logging in). But FamilySearch don't seem to have set things up that way. It actually is possible to get from the no-login page to the detail page, but you do have to go quite a long way round the houses: if from the no-login page you click on the link for a relative, that pops up a login screen, and then once logged in takes you to the detail page for the relative, from which you can get to the detail page for the person you actually wanted.
If you had to pay for an FS login, then I'd say point the URL formatter to the no-login page. But as FS has always been free (at least in money), it doesn't seem so harmful for the URL formatter to point to the with-login detail page, which (at least in my experience) is so much more useful. But let's ping the genealogy project and see if more people have views. Jheald (talk) 14:28, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Jzana: I'm not sure I understand. Can you give an example of a page you are interested in, what you are hoping to see, and what you are actually seeing? Jheald (talk) 14:31, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
MZ/X is my pen name. This name cam from a cartoon published in Hungary. MZ/X (talk) 15:23, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting this property[edit]

Websites that can only be used after prior registration should not be a property. I would be in favour of deleting this property. --HarryNº2 (talk) 14:51, 8 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ancestor version of the landing page[edit]

I reverted the change to the "ancestor" version of the landing page that does not require login to view. Two years ago it was decided not to change it. Serious researchers want the page with all the references and documents and images, and currently switching from the new ancestor-page to the old version gives an error message. I would not be against the move if there was no error message. The new "ancestor" landing page doesn't give much more info than we already provide at Wikidata. The page that requires login is rich in detail.
