Not to be confused with Q29520, which deals with a similar topic (generic cultural country, as opposed to the political entity/sovereign state). Some Wikipedias separate the sovereign state from the cultural country (e.g. ko:중화인민공화국/ko:중국), others don't (e.g. en:China). Benlisquare (talk) 13:52, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

English label[edit]

@JohnBlackburne:: You changed English label from "People's Republic of China" to "China" and I reverted it. This item (Q148) serve as "country of citizenship" (Property:P27) for many persons. If its label is simply "China", it not only may be confused with Q29520 (China as a cultural and historical entity), as Benlisquare mentioned above nearly five years ago, but also cannot be clearly distinguished from "Republic of China (1912–1949)" (Q13426199) as country of citizenship. The label "People's Republic of China" clarifies that this item refers to the sovereign state founded in 1949 and should only apply to those persons living after it was founded. --Neo-Jay (talk) 19:42, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You misunderstand the relevant policy, which is simple and clear: reflect common usage. It clarifies that further in the first sentence as "name that an item would be known by to the most readers". In this case that is "China". It does not need to be unique and very often isn’t. E.g. see Durham (Q49229) and Durham (Q179815). Further disambiguation should be provided by the description.--JohnBlackburne (talk) 19:54, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
"People's Republic of China", just like "New York City" (Q60), is not a disambiguation name. Something like "China (People's Republic)", or "New York (city)", is a disambiguation label, which we are not discussing. In English Wikipedia, there is no separate article for Q29520 (China as a cultural and historical entity). en:China refers to both the state founded in 1949 and the historical nation. But Q148 only refers to the former one. If English Wikipedia creates two articles for the two concepts, what "common name" will it use for Q148? I believe it will be "People's Republic of China", the actual common name for the state founded in 1949. Labeling Q148 as China had caused a huge amount of errors in Wikidata items' statements (e.g., using it as country of citizenship for people living before 1949). The right solution is to use "People's Republic of China" as its label. --Neo-Jay (talk) 20:04, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Particularly there is already established consensus for "People's Republic of China" label, so no changes without prior discussion.--Jklamo (talk) 21:29, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

MeSH ID[edit]

Hello, MeSH identification is missing. The entry is protected so I can't edit it. MeSH entry D002681 refers to People's Republic of China (https://meshb.nlm.nih.gov/record/ui?ui=D002681) and now Wikidata has the identification in another entity Q29520 (China as cultural region).  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by 139.47.43.39 (talk • contribs) at 31 January 2023 (UTC).

could you check, user:Daniel Mietchen?--Estopedist1 (talk) 07:20, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Estopedist1: I agree that MeSH Descriptor D002681 should be given here on People's Republic of China (Q148) (so I added it). However, its definition is broader, and China (Q29520) could well be considered in scope. Have removed it there for now but will think about it a bit more. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 01:01, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
