SEP:object as unit[edit]

Per SEP:object[1] And Russell:

I shall use as synonymous with [‘term’] the words unit, individual and entity. The first two emphasize the fact that every term is one, while the third is derived from the fact that every term has being, i.e. is in some sense. A man, a moment, a number, a class, a relation, a chimera, or anything else that can be mentioned, is sure to be a term (1903: 43)

Under this view, "unit" would amount to the same as entity. --Dan Polansky (talk) 11:51, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Terms may be used in different ways by different authors or in different contexts (e.g. domains). For this reason not only the label, but also the description is important to determine what a Wikidata item refers to. This item is described as
"entity regarded or used as an elementary structural or functional constituent to measure, analyse or describe another entity"
From the general notion of an entity in Wikidata ("anything that can be considered, discussed, or observed") it is mostly distinguished by emphasis on this function. This may or may not agree with Russell's notion of unit and this distinction may or may not be purely conceptual (e.g. most people would not consider human (Q5) primarily as something that is used as an elementary structural or functional constituent to measure, analyse or describe another entity but of course individual humans (or rather the data about them) may be statistical unit (Q3409269), depending on context). Currently this item is used mostly for concepts from different domains referring to units of analysis or description - e.g. leitmotif (Q221117), statistical unit (Q3409269), unit cell (Q11878049). - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 15:20, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
