Emu (talkcontribs)
Jonathan Groß (talkcontribs)

Die beiden sind tatsächlich identisch. Ich merge sie. Vielen Dank nochmal!

New properties' labels and descriptions

Horcrux (talkcontribs)

Hi! I noticed that, when you create a property you just use the English label and description provided in the proposal. In the future, may you look at all labels and description provided in the proposal? Thanks.

Jonathan Groß (talkcontribs)

If there are any, I will do that. However, today I also added descriptions for three properties that had none in any language. So it cancels out, I think.

Invitation to participate in the WQT UI requirements elicitation online workshop

Kholoudsaa (talkcontribs)

Dear Jonathan,

I hope you are doing well,

We are a group of researchers from King’s College London working on developing WQT (Wikidata Quality Toolkit), which will support a diverse set of editors in curating and validating Wikidata content.

We are inviting you to participate in an online workshop aimed at understanding the requirements for designing effective and easy-to-use user interfaces (UI) for three tools within WQT that can support the daily activities of Wikidata editors: recommending items to edit based on their personal preferences, finding items that need better references, and generating entity schemas automatically for better item quality.

The main activity during this workshop will be UI mockup sketching. To facilitate this, we encourage you to attend the workshop using a tablet or laptop with PowerPoint installed or any other drawing tools you prefer. This will allow for a more interactive and productive session as we delve into the UI mockup sketching activities.

Participation is completely voluntary. You should only take part if you want to and choosing not to take part will not disadvantage you in any way. However, your cooperation will be valuable for the WQT design. Please note that all data and responses collected during the workshop will be used solely for the purpose of improving the WQT and understanding editor requirements. We will analyze the results in an anonymized form, ensuring your privacy is protected. Personal information will be kept confidential and will be deleted once it has served its purpose in this research.

The online workshop, which will be held on April 5th, should take no more than 3 hours.

If you agree to participate in this workshop, please either contact me at kholoud.alghamdi@kcl.ac.uk or use this form to register your interest https://forms.office.com/e/9mrE8rXZVg Then, I will contact you with all the instructions for the workshop.

For more information about my project, please read this page: https://king-s-knowledge-graph-lab.github.io/WikidataQualityToolkit/

If you have further questions or require more information, don't hesitate to contact me at the email address mentioned above.

Thank you for considering taking part in this project.

Regards

Hi Jonathan,

Hi Jonathan, I'm seeing that you are creating some items with this P31. As far as I know those items exists solely to accomodate some Wikipedia pages, especially on the English Wikipedia, that are basically disambiguation page with a single topic in scope. I'm thus not really convince that we should bother to have one for each case in the absence of a Wikipedia page.

Jonathan Groß (talkcontribs)

Hi Jahl,

I think these set indices are very useful for gathering and distinguishing homonyms. I know of at least two examples where these set indices are used outside of Wikidata, even without sitelinks.

I believe if two or more characters (deities, heroes and heroines, horses, monsters...) share the same name, a set index can (and should) be created.

Jahl de Vautban (talkcontribs)

Do you have those examples at hand? I'm interested in seeing them.

Jonathan Groß (talkcontribs)
Jahl de Vautban (talkcontribs)

Sorry, I meant the use outside of Wikidata.

Jonathan Groß (talkcontribs)

I am currently going through the corresponding enwiki category from A to Z to clean up our items on Wikidata. Turn out there are some set indices incorrectly labelled as disambiguation pages or individuals. A recent example for the latter is Alce (Q4727676) which is for an individual deity but its sitelink to enwiki was the link to a set index.

Jonathan Groß (talkcontribs)

For use outside of Wikidata: MANTO and Mythoskop are two projects that incorporate links to Wikidata and try to find corresponding items. This process is much easier thanks to our set indices.

Jahl de Vautban (talkcontribs)

I'm more surprised by the fact that you have the motivation to go through the category than the items being mismodelled. :D Thanks !

Jonathan Groß (talkcontribs)

You're welcome :) Working alongside fine chaps like you is a pleasure.

Jonathan Groß (talkcontribs)

BTW The hope that this database might become more useful through this is my main motivation. Next comes my love for mythology. Then my gatherer gene. And somewhere below all that, my ego.

Jahl de Vautban (talkcontribs)

We might be sharing some traits then, though my love is more on history and bibliography. I dream of modelling the whole Roman imperial administration, but that won't come any time soon.

Mr. Moonlight (talkcontribs)

Hello, I'm writing to you because you are the creator of identificador DBIL (P12060) and I'm trying to figure out why it doesn't link to the dictionary when the property is added in an item. I'll really appreciate if you could help me with this. Thanks. ~~~~

Jonathan Groß (talkcontribs)

Hi! It should work soon, give it a few hours.

Jonathan Groß (talkcontribs)

It works for me now, after purging the page from cache. Give it a try.

Alexmar983 (talkcontribs)

If you're interested in getting new ressources to enhance and establish more robust standards in Wikidata, take a look to the grant programme from WMCH . One particular idea I had for example revolved around enhancing the description of epigraphs in Switzerland, trying to create those items to their full potentials.

My attention has since been diverted to other initiatives. However, you have the opportunity to seek additional funding and receive full support from the Swiss chapter, think about it.

I will be in Switzerland this November for the upcoming GLAM-on-Tour event. If you decide to submit a proposal, I will be available for discussions and can provide insights, and discuss with the staff there. I'm uncertain about the specific rules governing the grant system because I mainly apply for direct projects through the WMCH Innovation programe so I don't use it a lot, but I can ask around if you have some idea.

Jonathan Groß (talkcontribs)

Thank you for this valuable hint, Alex! I will look into the program and see if I'm eligible as a German citizen and resident. I don't know if I can make it in person to the GLAM event (it's in Lugano, right?), though it would be nice to meet you.

Best, Jonathan

Jonathan Groß (talkcontribs)
Alexmar983 (talkcontribs)

The glam event in Lugano is scheduled as follow

2023-11-23 18:00 2023-11-26 14:00 GLAM-on-Tour Swiss National Sound Archives

I'm copying this information from a "technical" page, but I'm not certain if I can provide the direct link. It's possible that the content is already publicly available on Meta, although I'm not actively following it there. In general I attend all WMCH GLAM-on-tour events but I know them in advance form the staff while we talk about many issues.

However, you're welcome to attend future GLAM events in other parts of Switzerland in any case. The Wikimedia Chapter in Switzerland (WMCH) covers your hotel and food expenses. However please note that, as of now, train tickets are not reimbursed if you're traveling from Germany. I'm advocating for a change in this policy, as it was different in the past.

About the grant, they gave money even in Brazil, as long as it is related to something "Swiss" you can get them. So if you have an idea, test it in Switzerland and it should be fine.
