Karl Neumey­er, a Jew­ish lawyer, was a pro­fes­sor at the Lud­wig Max­i­m­il­ian Uni­ver­si­ty of Mu­nich, and his wife, An­na, was a pi­o­neer­ing cam­paign­er for wom­en’s rights. Un­der ev­er-in­creas­ing per­se­cu­tion by the Nazis, they took their own lives on Ju­ly 17, 1941, at their home on the west­ern edge of the En­glis­ch­er Garten in Mu­nich, just a few hun­dred me­ters from the Na­tion­al Mu­se­um.
