What is Stille Nacht Heilige Nacht (Q172152)? The German version only? All versions? @Pasleim: has removed a lot of information about the international versions of the song. I am not sure that is a good idea. The encyclopedic articles in different language may well describe several different language versions of the song. And using has edition or translation (P747) for the different version might not be a good idea, because has edition or translation (P747) is - I believe - suppose to be about specific entities that, e.g., can be recognized with an ISBN. — Finn Årup Nielsen (fnielsen) (talk) 22:14, 7 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Fnielsen: We are using has edition or translation (P747) this way to indicate musical translations now simply because there is no clear property dedicated to music. In fact a lot of properties originally intended for books are now used by Project Music - not ideal, I agree. Moebeus (talk) 17:17, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's worth noting that Mohr/Gruber's song will at some point need a separate item from Young's English translation of the song (distinct from individual editions of that translation), as these two items will have separate items on English Wikisource which will be linked to separate Wikidata items. Separating original song and localized versions - it's a work in prgress

[edit]

There is a need to separate out the localized versions (some languages have several) and this has caused a bit of a mess. That is my fault. It is however a work in progress, and I will clean it up I promise. It makes sense to separate out the local articles before eventually collecting them back together on the original song. I have already found one article that wasn't really about Silent Night this way (the Icelandic one). I expect to be done by tomorrow, can everyone live with that? Moebeus (talk) 17:21, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If at the end we will have interwiki links between say en:Silent night, de:Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht and pl:Cicha noc, that's okay. But if you create a separate item for every local version, this will make it impossible to navigate between different language editions of Wikipedia, thus harming the experience of most readers, who will be unable to find the articles on the song in other languages. Barcival (talk) 19:39, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Barcival: Absolutely, that will be the case. We will have a separate WD item for each translation, but the main articles on Wikipedia will be on the same item. Sorry for the inconvenience, Moebeus (talk) 20:47, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Moebeus: OK, that's great. I won't disturb you any further :) Barcival (talk) 21:14, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If even the original song has been moved what is left here? What is this item about? --Infovarius (talk) 22:43, 14 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Infovarius: Like I said, it's a work in progress. It made a lot of people unhappy when I separated out the individual languages so there was a re-think. It looks like the best option is a general made-for-wikipedia item about the song in every language and then individual WD items for the actual musical works and adaptations with their respective translators, interpreters, etc. Does that make sense to you?
