[en] label[edit]
Something interesting for me:
- Initially created using "Timor-Leste";
- Renamed to "East Timor" in Apr 2015;
- Removed in Nov 2015, later reverted;
- Renamed to "Timor Leste" in Apr 2021;
- Renamed back to "East Timor" in May 2021;
- 2nd Renamed to "Timor Leste" in this month
On the other hand, en:Talk:East Timor has Old moves template, that logged 7 move requests, all of them are failed, either no consensus or consensus to not move, so for what reason en label can't be "East Timor"? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 11:50, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- The country's name is Timor-Leste. That is the name that it uses in the United Nations and the name by which it is recognized by the U.S. Department of State. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 15:52, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

- (Actually, I did not "oppose" the last rename request, I closed the discussion as "no consensus"). As determined by multiple formal discussions, the country's common and prevailing name in English is "East Timor", and that's affirmed by the page title en:East Timor. Timor-Leste is a redirect, tagged as "Redirect from alternative name", although the result remains contentious "Timor-Leste" is indeed widely used in English, including some international organizations, but their decisions (while carrying weight) are not binding for English Wikipedia policies. I am not sure if Wikidata has any separate content-related dispute resolution policies, but IMO it makes sense to adopt English Wikipedia titles (sans disambiguators) as Wikidata labels. - There is no requirement that Wikidata labels match Wikipedia. In this case, I strongly feel that we should call the country the name that it wishes to be called. Major reference sources and international and English-language agencies do that: The World Factbook, Nations Online, World Bank, Asia Foundation, and sources cited above. Britannica seems to be a holdout. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 18:09, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
- @UWashPrincipalCataloger Don't you think your action makes many external templates broken or otherwise meeting rocks? Two example can be found at Commons: c:Template:CRT list2 and c:Template:Countries of Asia, where link is named "Timor-Leste" but linked to East Timor.
- I still feel that such labels that are globally used several times should be discussed carefully before any changes, otherwise we can always meet Q907112-like problems, that's a wasting of SWAT times. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 05:04, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
- As still no respond, I boldly removed one official name (P1448) value in English, as its source is unreliable, re-add when there's a reliable source indicated its really, really true official English name (where as of now, non of organizations confirmed it, at the very least, the IOC, IPC, ANOC, World Athletics, World Aquatics, ITF, BWF, FIFA, FIBA, FIVB, ... many of sport organizations are adpoting East Timor instead of Timor Leste). - @UWashPrincipalCataloger Just note, today I contacted World Bank, WHO and WTO to ask for altering their mixed "Timor Leste" to be East Timor, where they're mix-using both names, see also the newest failure for renaming in the last year. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 06:04, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
