With shares border with (P47), I've removed all neighboring units that are below the administrative level of German lander. I see no point in listing all of them here.--Kompakt (talk) 07:24, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Since P47 is reciprocal, the units should not be countries but first-level administrative subdivisions such as Swiss cantons.--Ymblanter (talk) 07:47, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You suggest that a Swiss canton and a German land is just the same. From a legal point of view, there is no border between a German land and a Swiss canton, there's just a border between the souvereign countries of Germany and Switzerland - which would indeed mean to remove Switzerland and France as well.
Another problem is that this won't work as soon as you get to lower levels of administrative subdivision. What is the Swiss counterpart of a Regierungsbezirk (Q22721), and what that of a district of Germany (Q106658), and what values should we enter for P47 with e.g. Konstanz (Q8206) and Freiburg Government Region (Q8167) accordingly?--Kompakt (talk) 09:11, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The current solution explicitly violates reciprocity. We do not write (and we do not want to) that Switzerland borders Bavaria.--Ymblanter (talk) 11:30, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Another option would be not to mention other countries at all in shares border with (P47).--Ymblanter (talk) 11:32, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This would probably be the best option. The idea of reciprocity looks good at a firat glance, but it totally neglects that countries have different administrative structures. A French Département isn't the same as a German land or a Swiss canton, actually it's more similar to a German Regierungsbezirk or Landkreis. France, unlike Germany, isn't a federal country. There are administrative layers in one country that don't exist in another-Kompakt (talk) 18:21, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, and it was already discussed at least once. I think we should take it to a more general level like Project Chat or the property talk page.--Ymblanter (talk) 19:05, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I do not agree. A small unit has borders to units of the same level, but maybe also a border to one or more units of a bigger level. Wikidata should avoid inherited information like "Frankfurt (Oder) (Germany) has a border to Lubusz Voivodship (Poland) and therefor Frankfurt (Oder) has a border to Poland and Lubusz Voivodship has a border to Germany". It is much easier to use the simple data "Frankfurt (Oder) has a border to Poland" and "Frankfurt (Oder) has a border to Lubusz Voivodship" and "Lubusz Voivodship has a border to Germany". --Sebastian Wallroth (talk) 14:03, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
