Rugby team members

Hi, did you use some sort of script when you added all those player properties? If so, you need to fix your script, because you added them to a crapload of items that are for disambiguation pages and not the players themselves. See Wikidata:Database reports/Constraint violations/P54#Type Q215627, practically everything is from your run... There are again many wrong member of sports team (P54) claims. Which method do you use to match the entries from your source file with Wikidata items? If you add P54 claims to disambiguation pages it can be fixed easily but how do we know that you don't add P54 to politician or other sports person who have the same name as a rugby player? --Pasleim (talk) 08:27, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

@Pasleim:The process requires several steps. First, I use Magnus Manske's QuickStatements tools to match the english labels to the corresponding WD items. As it produces some errors, I then check the constraints violations page of member of sports team (P54), remove the wrong claims and write down the corresponding names in a specific list. Then I use autolist to query all the items linked to a specific national rugby union team, remove the P54 claim to each item with a description that doesn't fit through Autolist and add the corresponding names to my list. When I'm done, I look for the pages of the players listed for correction in Enwiki, note the Q-number of the corresponding WD item and then add the claims to the correct items through QuickStatements.

Currently, the problems with the updating of Autolist is slowing down the correction process but I will fix all the wrong claims eventually. --Casper Tinan (talk) 10:59, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Jean-Pierre Jaussaud Q910777

Hello, Caspar Tinan, On Jaussaud's page you changed (under sports team) 'Matra' to 'Matra F1' but J-PJ did not drive in F1 for Matra (nor for any other team) he was purely a sports and endurance racer. There isn't an enWiki page for Matra F1 and all articles thereon which link to Matra do so to the 'Matra' page. Secondly Jean Rondeau was also a constructor as well as a driver and wiki pages for his team's drivers link to 'Jean Rondeau' and then to the constructor section. To include Rondeau under wikidata items for team drivers such as Jaussaud would I presume require creation of an item (say) "Rondeau → French racing car constructor" but as there is not a wiki page I am not sure whether that would be correct. @Eagleash:. Yes, I've modified some statements regarding a few racing drivers because they generated constraints' breaches for the member of sports team (P54) property. First, I've linked Jaussaud's page to the Matra Sports' page Equipe Matra Sports (Q844092), the racing team owned by Matra that took part in many racing competition and not only in F1 races (see the french, dutch or polish WP pages). This statement is therefore correct. Regarding Rondeau's racing team, the basic principle in Wikidata is to keep distinct concepts separate. That's why you have to create a new item regarding the racing team if you want to add a statement about Jaussaud's involvement with this team. This addition fully complies with Wikidata principles regarding notability as it is a clearly identifiable entity that fulfill a structural need. --Casper Tinan (talk) 19:41, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

OK; yes I understand the need to create a new item for Jean Rondeau's own team. I will do that (if there's no objection). With regard to Matra, F1 is, as you say, just one of the forms of racing that Matra took part in under the 'Matra Sports' name. As such the page name (Matra F1) is not strictly correct. If it can't be moved, then maybe adding the 'alias' Matra Sports would help identify the correct page when adding statements. As I recall the name 'Matra F1' did not appear in the drop-down when adding statements, but I will know to search for it in future. (I will check some other Matra drivers also). Thanks. Casper, that's probably subject to interpretation, whether coaches should be listed by "employer" or "member of sports team". That said, you also deleted Arnsparger's college team, the Miami University/Miami RedHawks (actually known as the Miami Redskins at the time), where he was a player, not a coach. Miami of Ohio, known in football circles as the "Cradle of Coaches," is notable for the disproportionate number of notable head coaches among its former players and assistants. In the future, I ask that you correct such team member/employer entries, rather than simply deleting them and not notifying the other contributors. Thanks. Hello Casper Tinan. A while back you added some details to this item indicating that he played for The Wallabies in the 2000s as a fullback. Must have been a different Julian Huxley as this one was a British Biologist/Anthropologist etc. who died in 1975. I've removed the incorrect details. Salut, je suis en train d'ajouter les carrières des joueurs de rugby et je suis tombé par hasard sur ce diff qui semble problématique vu que le joueur en question n'était pas né :) J'ai supprimé l'info mais au cas où tu voudras peut-être regardé dans tes données sources s'il n'y a pas eu un décalage quelque part. Par ailleurs ça serait pas mal de sourcer ce genre d'info avec la référence utilisée d'autant qu'elles ne sont pas toutes triviales (en particulier le series ordinal (P1545), tu trouves ça où?) @Symac: Effectivement, un problème d'homonymie avec Denis Joseph Hickie, international irlandais né en 1943 et qui n'a pas encore de pages Wikidata. J'ai complété et sourcé l'affirmation. Barbara Stevens

Please help me understand the edit you made, and keep in mind I am very new to Wikidata.

The edit summary suggests that entering Bridgewater State University as a value is the problem, yet your edit didn't remove the value, it removed the reference. This is puzzling.

The source and the Wikipedia article states that she played for Bridgewater State College (now Bridgewater State University). This type of statement is quite common. Are you suggesting I need to track down the mascot at the time and identify the mascot? @Sphilbrick: Sorry, I intended to remove both the value and the reference but cancelled the wrong edit. As I said in the comment, member of sports team (P54) only accept sports teams and clubs as a value but not universities. Therefore, a link to Bridgewater State University women's basketball team or Bridgewater State University sports association (most of the designated by the name of the local mascot) is valid but not a link to Bridgewater State University. You are correct. I did "make" the change but missed that the save button was in gray. It appears one cannot add it unless it has an associated Q code? Does that sound correct? I also tried removing it so I could start over but that didn't seem to work.

It is slightly curious that the University is not allowed as an entry. In a legal sense, a player signs a letter of intent in exchange for a scholarship. That document is signed by the player (and often a parent or guardian if they are as typical, under 21) and a representative of the University. Is a legal document between the school and the player not between the team and the player. I don't know that teams are separate legal entities although in the case of some high profile football teams that is probably true.

Do you know who made this decision? Assuming it cannot be changed what do we do next?--Sphilbrick (talk) 20:20, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

I notice that some teams, e.g. Duke https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16153415 have an entry for their basketball team. I don't believe there is such an entry for the Bridgewater State University team. As Barbara Stevens is a valid entry on enwiki, it is ok to create the items needed to make that kind of statements (For more details, see Wikidata:Notability). Yet, as far as I am concerned, I would rather create an item for Bridgewater State University's sport association (the Bears ?) as a whole and not only for the women basketball team. --Casper Tinan (talk) 21:10, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Hold on, this isn't making sense. As an example I just added "Oklahoma Sooners women's basketball" to the "member of sports team" for LaNeishea Caulfield. I did not enter "Oklahoma Sooners" because that's the nickname. The property description is "sports teams or clubs that the subject currently represents or formerly represented". In fact, your edit Replace the school name with the team name, which I think is correct, but doesn't match the advice you have given.--Sphilbrick (talk) 14:03, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

Yet, this page lists a few cases of constraints violations that come from your actions (for instance, Alison Bales, Doug Bruno, Janice Lawrence). I think it is by design. In many cases, the value is intrisically ok but the required statements have not been added to the item yet. The constraint violation report is also an invitation to add statements to the items used as values. Casper Tinan (talk) 15:14, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

points for (P1358) & final general classification of the UCI Word Tour 2015 (Q21087714)

Je te confirme. number of points/goals/set scored (P1351) correspond aux points, buts, paniers marqués dans le cours d'une épreuve sportive et qui en déterminent le score. Pour les points obtenus pour un classement général, par exemple pour les points terrain qui donnent le classement de chaque poule de la coupe du monde de rugby à XV ou pour les points UCI, il faut utiliser points for (P1358).

Removal of qualifier

Hi, could you please explain this edit? The qualifier is used for the automatic creation of infoboxes in the German Wikipedia. The Lua module has to find out whether an item belongs to a club or a national team, this was expressed by that qualifier. As you removed it, the infobox looks messed up: [2]. Qualifiers are designed to add details about the nature of the relation designated by a statement : When it began ? When it ended ? Etc. They are to be used to make statements about the value (in that case, the team). Jamaica under-17 football team 2011 is a national football team, whether Romario Williams was part of it or not. Therefore you should have added the instance of (P31)->national association football team (Q6979593) statement on the Jamaica under-17 football team (Q3590247) and used the arbitrary access to get the value of instance of (P31) for each team.

In the end you are right. However, this is not implemented in the Lua module for the template yet. Removing these qualifiers ruins the infoboxes. Please keep in mind it was only shortly ago when arbitrary access was enabled in the big Wikipedia projects such as de.wp. Yellowcard (talk) 13:00, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi Casper, it's me again. I don't understand this removal. point in time (P585) is used to determine the last update of the data as this data is subject to regular changes (especially the number of games and goals). The description of the property says: "time and date [...] a statement was true", so it should be used for exactly this purpose. Wikidata does not have any better way yet, unfortunately. We have to express what point of time the data refers to, otherwise it becomes a wrong statement quickly (i.e. within a week). Yellowcard (talk) 09:13, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

@Yellowcard: point in time (P585) isn't needed for statement with a end time (P582) qualifier (unless the value is "no value"). Since the sportsperson isn't a member of the concerned team any longer, he won't play any more match for it or score any more points. Salut Casper Tinan. Je souhaite importer dans Wikidata les données des entraîneurs de football (club, date de début, date de fin) à partir des infoboxes, comme je l'ai fait pour les joueurs. J'ai l'impression que ça n'a jamais été trop fait, et je ne trouve donc pas de recommandation pour la saisie de ces données (employer (P108) ? occupation (P106) ? member of sports team (P54) ? - il faudrait alors ouvrir la propriété au qualifier position held (P39) - une autre encore ?). I thought that was vital information since he has represented in different sports for different clubs, so you wouldn't think that he had represented same club for both sports.
