Entering numbers[edit]

Hello, thank you for your edits in opera elements. Each time I enter quantity, it's always like "3±1", could you please tell how did you manage to enter the exact quantity? Thanks.--EUvin (talk) 10:27, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi EUvin, thank you for your message. I used to have the same issue. Entering "3±0" seems to do the trick. But maybe there is also a different way. --Gnom (talk) 11:11, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

GDPR and more[edit]

Hi Gnom, I saw on Phabricator that you work professionally regarding privacy and GDPR. On the Dutch Wikipedia there is a discussion about whether the existence of a a property for sexual orientation (P91) is violation GDPR (besides some other concerns). As basically everyone in the discussion seems to have zero experience with GDPR practically nor the law in general, the discussion moves towards Godwin's law (Q154619) and is not helpful. Besides GDPR there is also no basic understanding why Wikipedia (and Wikidata) collects information about people. When reading the Dutch GDPR website, it seems every information about a living individual falls under GDPR. To me personally this seems a bit weird, as like this would mean we can't have articles about living people. So I guess I am missing something and I hope you can make it a bit clear for me. So my question is:

  • On which ground is it allowed for Wikipedia (and Wikidata) to collect public information (from reliable sources) and publish this in articles about people.

My second question goes deeper into one particular topic regarding living people: the sexual orientation. In the Dutch GDPR website this is described as special personal information. But I guess how we have to deal with this kind of information depends also on the previous question. So my second question is:

  • Do you think that mentioning the sexual orientation of well known people in Wikipedia articles and/or Wikidata items is allowed (or not), and then especially I would be interested to know why or why not, aka on which grounds this is (not) allowed?

Besides these two questions here, yesterday I also asked regarding this in the central discussion page of Wikidata on this page. I hope you can share your insights on this talk page or on the project page or both. Thanks! Greetings - Romaine (talk) 05:41, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Romaine, thank you for this message and your great questions. I will reply here first to see whether it answers your questions and then post them on the two pages where you asked.
Put very simply, the GDPR does not apply to the article mainspace, because it falls under the exception of art. 85 GDPR which refers to the law of the EU member states protecting "the right to freedom of expression and information, including processing [personal data] for journalistic purposes and the purposes of academic expression". This rule covers both the question of whether we are allowed to publish personal data about a living EU resident in the first place (art. 6 GDPR), as well as the question of so-called sensitive data (art. 9 GDPR).
You can read the full text of the GDPR here or, in an easier format, here. For further reading, you may want to check the GDPR's recitals, namely nos. 4, 65, and 153.
Would this answer help settle the debate(s) you mentioned? Or should I give you a more detailed answer?
Kind regards, --Gnom (talk) 07:59, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Gnom, Thank you for the answer, this helps a lot! It certainly answers the first question. It is easier to search for something when I know what to search for. This website I just found with searching for article 85 GDPR.
The second question is not really answered. Does article 85 imply that also the sexual orientation of famous people falls under this. The question that was asked regarding this matter is that people in the discussion could not imagine what journalistic purposes nor academic expression there could be for this kind of data (Does such matter?). Thanks! Romaine (talk) 08:12, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I just expanded my answer, is it better now? Happy to expand it further before I post it elsewhere. --Gnom (talk) 08:35, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Gnom, Seems excellent! If you can post it on the Project chat, then I will translate your message to Dutch and post it in Dutch on nl-wiki. Thanks! Greetings - Romaine (talk) 09:04, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
PS: If it would settle the debate I do not know, I hope it at least removes the inclarities. I believe a discussion should be primarily be based on facts, and those were missing. Romaine (talk) 09:13, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Call for participation in a task-based online experiment[edit]

Dear Gnom,

I hope you are doing good,

I am Kholoud, a researcher at King's College London, and I work on a project as part of my PhD research, in which I have developed a personalised recommender system that suggests Wikidata items for the editors based on their past edits. I am collaborating on this project with Elena Simperl and Miaojing Shi.

I am inviting you to a task-based study that will ask you to provide your judgments about the relevance of the items suggested by our system based on your previous edits. Participation is completely voluntary, and your cooperation will enable us to evaluate the accuracy of the recommender system in suggesting relevant items to you. We will analyse the results anonymised, and they will be published to a research venue.

The study will start in late February 2022, and it should take no more than 30 minutes.

If you agree to participate in this study, please either contact me at kholoud.alghamdi@kcl.ac.uk or use this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSees9WzFXR0Vl3mHLkZCaByeFHRrBy51kBca53euq9nt3XWog/viewform?usp=sf_link I will contact you with the link to start the study.

For more information about the study, please read this post: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Kholoudsaa In case you have further questions or require more information, don't hesitate to contact me through my mentioned email.

Thank you for considering taking part in this research.

Regards
