Country contemporary constraint[edit]

What use case prompted you to remove the constraint? Can you comment on Wikidata:Requests_for_comment/Current_or_contemporary_location_and_country_for_events so we can get a consensus on this. Vicarage (talk) 05:31, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vicarage, Very simple, that constraint hasn't been thought through and is highly problematic. We constantly use country indicators for thousands of items to indicate that a certain subject was located in a knowadays country. For example roman cities, celtic towns, and so on. We even have an articles with titles like Romans in the Netherlands (Q2272797). The country is NOT only the place where a subject is located when it existed, but also the place where it once existed.
  • If you have a castle, it is located in a country.
  • If you have a castle destroyed with some remaining walls, it is located in a country.
  • If only the fundaments remain underground, it is located in a country.
  • If a few artifacts remain underground, it is located in a country.
It is common to locate destroyed objects in nowadays countries. A contemporary constraint is not a solution to deal with these kind of situations. Romaine (talk) 00:10, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This subject has been discussed multiple times on the talk page of the property with indications of the problematic nature of this constraint, it is unacceptable to still (re-)add this without proper discussion first! Romaine (talk) 00:14, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Creating a Wikidata property[edit]

Hello, I request you to create a Wikidata property for the Quran encyclopedia site (https://referenceworks.brillonline.com/browse/encyclopaedia-of-the-quran/) similar to the Wikidata property (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P11761) of the Islamica encyclopedia (https://referenceworks.brillonline.com/browse/encyclopaedia-islamica). THANKS Soufiyouns (talk) 22:34, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Soufiyouns, It is not allowed to just create a property. Every property needs to be requested, the request will then be evaluated by the community, after which a property may or may not be created. You can file a property request at Wikidata:Property proposal/Authority control. Romaine (talk) 22:40, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Romaine,
Thank you for your kind response and for your excellent explanation and guidance.

THANKS Soufiyouns (talk) 08:23, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tool of the week

  • Wikidata periodic table - Tool by User:Ricordisamoa, to browse all chemical elements available on Wikidata, with atomic number, chemical symbol, and localized label. It also includes two charts of the nuclides, with links to every isotope in Wikidata, colored by half-life or decay mode.

Other Noteworthy Stuff

  • A new UI mode is available for the online validator for EntitySchemas. It represents validation reports as a table rather than a very long string, and replaces most links with hyperlinks with some of the text behind them; making them easier to read. Currently being tested at https://shex-validator.toolforge.org/packages/shex-webapp/doc/shex-simple-improved.html, we are looking for participants to evaluate this tool. Some experience with editing Wikidata is appreciated, but no experience working with Schemas is required. If you are interested, you can sign up here. We hope to begin interviews around May 13.
