Import a page

It's possible import the page "Aiuto:Maiuscolo e minuscolo" from itwiki in "Help:Maiuscolo e minuscolo". It's useful to better explain when use uppercase or lowercase in labels and descriptions. Thanks! --Beta16 (talk) 22:48, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Adding autopatroller flags

Admins have been pretty fast so far granting Autopatroller to trusted users, but since Phase II is getting us a surge in translation efforts, I encourage all of you, especially those of you who speak less frequently spoken languages, to keep an eye on Special:RecentChanges for new users who can be autopatrolled. Lately I've been seeing a lot of sprees of new users changing property descriptions, and once we can verify that they're not saying "sex boobiez lol", we can probably autopatrol them all. Since everyone's so concerned about being quick to the punch on fighting vandalism, let's get a head start by sorting out the good ones before the real trolls start coming. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 14:42, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Duplicate blocks bug

As noted in this bug, changing block settings on Wikidata often produces a duplicate block rather than modifying the original block (Special:BlockList shows two entries for one IP address). I'm just making sure that all admins are aware of this problem.

While it is being addressed, the way I rectify such problems when I modify one of my own blocks is to unblock the IP address twice and then re-block it with my intended settings.--Jasper Deng (talk) 23:00, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello, by a glance at an automatically translated version, there is consensus. Another check showed that the main difference with the pages now is that there are links to other languages, {{Proposed}}, and a nutshell on the version using the translate extension. By the looks of the discussions, however, the content is the main problem. Is that so? It isn't possible to edit Help:Aliases/de directly, and a conditional redirect from the translatable page is impossible. However, the most that might be possible is a conditional soft redirect. If the content is in fact the main problem, I think we could try the conditional soft redirect to your language's modified version of the page, considering this is sufficient.  Hazard-SJ  ✈  02:24, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
I think there is a fundamental mistake currently at using the Translation extension for this site as I thought there is an (informal) agreement that every language can decide there own rules for labels, description and aliases. I think the extension should be only used for global rules or definition pages (like administrators, notability etc. ). And if it is not possible that there is an coexistence of extension and not translate pages would should only use the extension there. Error while editing

In light of the mess at Wikidata:Administrators/Confirm 2013/5#Bináris (talk • contribs • log actions), would it be too audacious to suggest that Pallerti (talk • contribs • logs) be instructed to remove his canvassing from the Hungarian VPM, under penalty of block? As long as it's up, it creates an uncomfortable situation for our community, where we find ourselves forced to question the motives of supporters, and engage in an unnecessary drama not for anything that Bináris did, but rather for what Pallerti did. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 13:59, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

You can ask him to remove his canvassing but at all a penalty of block would not be the right method. He has not done anything disallowed. Additionaly, the result seems still to be quite clear (more opposes than supports) and it is very unlikely that Bináris would get enough huwiki votes for passing. I also disagree with Pallerti but as I said he has not done anything against our policy and a block penalty would be absolutely inacceptable. We have to create rules against such actions (or votes from users with too few contribs) before we start dealing with penalties etc. Regards, Vogone (talk) 15:03, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

You miss the point though: canvassing is frowned upon on every WMF project, and this was highly unethical. This reflects very badly on your project and on your candidate. A few remarks are in place:

  1. To call for a general public election was the right thing to do because Wikidata affects Wikipedia in general. This is especially true for the Hungarian section, as huWiki is using WikiData already.
  2. So we are talking here about a public election. Announcements like the one in question ("please vote at your discretion" or "theres's an event, vote as you see fit") create the public space which is fundamental to any meaningful election, and they should have been made by the organizers themselves.
  3. The idea of voters more or less welcome is incompatible with the principles of one (wo)man, one vote.

The Hungarian community associates his name with the Wikidata project, since he was the one who initiated the Wikidata being deployed on Hungarian Wikipedia. This election is not like a presidential election, here other candidates could profit of more potential voter as well.

I think this issue is getting blown out of proportion. On the one hand, the three-four projects where Wikidata is currently enabled have an interest in having a seamless user experience when they are "forced" to edit on Wikidata, which could include in addition to the translation already in place, being able to turn to admins in a language they understand (I am not sure there are any other Hungarian speaking admins at the moment) and are comfortable in – in this regard, I agree that the organizers could have exerted some effort in inviting candidates and making sure the relevant communities were actually informed of the confirmation process and its implications (one of which is whether there would be a confirmed native speaker admin at the end or not, and what would be the procedure to allow one to be in place).
Lacking this prior notification, I feel this line of questioning and doubting the actions of Pallerti or Bináris (who is totally innocent in this) by applying standards from an other community has a potential to tarnish the image of Wikidata among Hungarian editors, which is unhelpful to the utmost degree (considering, that it was that community that most enthusiastically embraced the idea when it was presented at Wikimania, allowing it to be the first project to be enabled on).
Finally, you may observe, that the link Pallerti has given is to the confirmation page's top, allowing anyone to read the rules and vote on any candidate (Bináris being at the bottom of the page). Furthermore, I believe that elections don't happen in a vacuum and to pique the interest of the electorate one should provide the necessary context, like if there is an issue or person in an election that an electorate may be interested to voice their opinion about; the electorate might not realize that doing so is a possibility if a less appealing title is given along with a link to a foreign page.
I do invite all of you to edit the linked huwiki page and explain the concept of this confirmation election and the rules governing it in a language of your choosing (someone will surely translate) to provide the necessary contextual information to anyone who you think might have been fooled by the link into thinking that the election is only about Bináris, etc. –Bence (talk) 00:08, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
But you've only solicited comments from the Hungarian community and not from other communities; if we had done that on the English Wikipedia I'm sure there would have been a much larger uproar.
Individual language communities are not entitled to have an admin who speaks their language. We evaluate each candidate based on their individual merits. We don't mandate a language quota for the stewards, Meta admins, or Commons admins; I see no need to do such here.
Finally, Wikidata is a community that operates off global Wikimedia norms. The Hungarian Wikipedia may not care about canvassing, but most other wikis do. Again, you are applying standards from other wikis claiming they are global whereas there are 800 projects united by the five pillars and 800 different sets of norms... I don't want to continue this discussion too much, just reiterate that not having admins who speak languages or who show empathy would be a great loss for Wikidata and this confirmation has caused quite a bit of damage to the image of this project (and I suggest you think about how separate Wikidata is when it is, in phase 1 at least, filling a very important support role for other projects and their editors are constantly redirected here).
In any case, thanks Ymblanter for your message on huwiki, basing the decision on Bináris' activity level and not his activity on other projects is a good call. Commons and Meta are the other two wikis that are multilingual and which serve other projects - so those are the most relevant here. You're welcome to your opinion of course, but in the end one of the five pillars is consensus, and consensus of the editors of this project is what is important. Let's put it this way. Would it actually hurt anyone here if Bináris was an admin? Is there a limit on the number of admins and would him being an admin take the possibility from another candidate? All Hungarian Wikipedians agree he would be good for the job (it's not like Pallerti asked his 80-year-old aunt to register and vote, these users can actually testify that Bináris does a good job). The question is, does this community (Wikidata) trust him to follow our policies and to stay active according to our requirements? To put this in perspective, I am an admin on the English Wikipedia and have been one for 7 years. I think that I do a good job there . However, I would most likely fail a RFA at Commons or Meta. Why? Don't I know how to use the tools? The problem is that I have not shown enough commitment to either of those two sites, and do not meet their expectations of what an admin has to be. I do not know Commons or Meta policies well enough to be an admin there. The point is that his contributions on this wiki should stand on their own, not for anything he has done for the Hungarian Wikipedia. I have served the English Wikipedia since 2005 with my contributions and Wikidata just went live there, but I am not going to advertise my election there for potential voters to see that I am a good Wikidata editor. I have no problem with Bináris and I don't think anyone else does here either, but I have a problem with an entire community separate of Wikidata coming here to promote their users, especially when I am standing for re-confirmation myself. Correcting link to Community portal in sidebar for Sorbian languages

Hello, could someone correct the link to the Community portal page in sidebar to the correct Sorbian pages? At the moment the link Portal Wikidata is linked to the page Wikidata:Portal which doesn't exist. The existing pages are Wikidata:Community portal/hsb (for Upper Sorbian) and Wikidata:Community portal/dsb (for Lower Sorbian). I think the link text Portal Wikidata should be changed as well: to Portal zhromadźenstwa (Upper Sorbian, hsb) and Portal zgromaźeństwa (Lower Sorbian). No, it's a system message. You must translate it on translatewiki.net. Let you give the translator rights there and you can translate system messages resp. change existing translations. layout of Special:SpecialPages

Is it possible for an admin to change the layout of Special:SpecialPages so that the "Wikidata repository" section can be at the top? I hope we could largely agree that the Wikidata-specific functions are the most important/most used stuff on this page ("create item", "create property", search). Also, I don't think all the different methods of searching WD that we now have are reflected on this page? Unfortunately I don't think an admin can change the order of the page. It might be possible for the devs to do that in the code though. Not sure. If there are special pages not listed, that is something the developers can take care of. Wikidata does use a lot of special pages so it may be worth considering how we can use that page better. Correcting link to Project chat in sidebar for Sorbian languages

Hello, could someone correct the link to the Project chat in sidebar to the correct Sorbian pages? At the moment the link Project chat is linked to the page Wikidata:Project chat which doesn't exist. The existing pages are Wikidata:Korčma (for Upper Sorbian) and Wikidata:Kjarcma (for Lower Sorbian). The link text should be Korčma (Upper Sorbian, hsb) and Kjarcma (Lower Sorbian, dsb). Make FuzzyBot autopatroller

Can User:FuzzyBot get the autopatroller flag? I think its edits are always uncontroversial and shouldn't need patrol. It would be a bit tedious to patrol every edit merely marking things FUZZY. Background color for fuzzied messages in Translation tool

Hello, I want to ask if it is possible to use a separate background color for fuzzied messages in the Translation tool. Currently there are two colors only, grey for fuzzied and unfuzzied messages and green for untranslated messages. Was it vandalism? IP was adding Sex=Eunuch for castrated people. Maybe it was not semantic correct (since the value had to be male/female), but was true.
And second thing - it was NAT IP used by biggest provider in city with 100000 inhabitants, so block with autoblock should have biggest impact than only my (auto)blocking. BTW, can I somewhere ask for IP-block-exempt?

Header change to property creation page

Please add a link to the top of the property creation page, which was modified recently by James F. I believe based on a suggestion on this page.

The link addition I'm requesting is the real-time list of properties served up by Special:AllPages. It exists in the introduction to Wikidata:Property proposal, but since it is possible for properties to be created but not yet listed on Wikidata:Property proposal, I for one would find it very helpful (for example, a number of properties get made before someone closes a property discussion for that property, so there's potential for duplication).
