Help with a gadget

We have now a new administrator, יונה בנדלאק. Could an admin please help me to add him to the gadget MediaWiki:Gadget-markAdmins.js (or a no-admin provide a code so that I could do it myself). Thanks.--Ymblanter (talk) 11:56, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

No need to thank me. I tried, failed and got interrupted before I could figure out what went wrong. Anyway, the trick is that non-Latin user names have to be URL-encoded (just google "urlencode" to find tons of tools if you need to do something like this again yourself). --YMS (talk) 13:15, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
Ok, thanks, will try if needed.--Ymblanter (talk) 13:18, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
If you work with Chrome and you copy & paste the url, you got the encoded name (just need to take the name without all the prefix). I know it work in chrome, maybe it work in other browsers too. - yona b (talk) 13:42, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

Amazon Standard Identification Number property proposal

Wikidata:Property proposal/Amazon Standard Identification Number has been open since last August, with no new comments since the first half of November, Please can someone close it; and perhaps review the other stale proposals in Wikidata:Property proposal/Overview, more than 30 of which are over a quarter of a year old? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:53, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

every one of the older ones is an example of a failure to reach consensus in some way or other. However I believe where we left things in the last RFP discussion was that the proposer had to close the proposal as "withdrawn". Or are property creators still allowed to just mark them "not done" to close? ArthurPSmith (talk) 21:38, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
Ok, I went ahead and did the "not done" in this case. I can look through some of the older ones too but I don't want to close ones I dissented from. ArthurPSmith (talk) 21:42, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Vandalism

Hello, I hope I am posting in the right place, I am not used to the SYSOP system in Wikidata... I ask for the blocking of the user Ramirezo, who has been banned from the French Wikipedia for POV-pushing, sock-puppetry and claimed clearly to be playing with the system to test its limits. He has been repeatedly reverting modifications on Q2668161 to clean the biography, removing sourced descriptions and trying to present a person who is unanimously considered as a "crank" (litteral sense, not as an insult) for a physicist (which he is not, he owns a physics diploma, that's all). Thanks in advance! Totodu74 (talk) 10:18, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Oups, didn't see this subject, I protected the item for two weeks and left a warning. --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 10:56, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
Is it possible to simply block indefinitely this user? We had discussions with an easy decision taking on requests to sysops on WP:fr, then on the bulletin of sysops. Beyond the content of his contributions and the simple POV-pushing, he further stated he was a journalist, and wrote: my editorial asked me to investigate what is really going on behind the scenes on this site and that's what I'm doing right now. I test (sometimes under IP) the neutrality of certain articles, the reactions of each other and the malicious sophisms that often appear in requests to administrators. I am a bit tired wasting my time with such a charlie. Totodu74 (talk) 08:28, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Q25089

Several IPs are vandalizing the element Q25089, it must be protected. Greetings, Ignoratum 03:05, 3 January 2017 (UTC).

I protected the page. The vandalism was such extensive that in the flooded recent changes it was visible. Romaine (talk) 03:22, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
But the problem is larger, I estimate that from about 40 to 50 IP addresses the vandalism took place, not only on this article, but on a larger series of articles. From all the IP addresses used I checked if there were done any edits in other articles too, and some did, and also there vandalism and reverted. I think we need to keep our eye open for more vandalism to come. Romaine (talk) 03:33, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
All started when a Spanish Twitter's account named @UniversoSimpson said that Woody Allen had died and some of their followers started to vandalized the page. Ignoratum 03:53, 3 January 2017 (UTC).

I created a gadget in Russian Wikipedia for export values from infoboxes into Wikidata. There are lots of edits, and I want to track them and be able to get feedback in case of errors. So I want a new tag which I could add to the edits made by gadget. The description can be about that:

  • name: InfoboxExport gadget
  • appearance: [[:ru:Википедия:Гаджеты/Экспорт в Викиданные|InfoboxExport]]
  • description: Edit made using the [[:ru:Википедия:Гаджеты/Экспорт в Викиданные|InfoboxExport]] gadget

GerardM

I noticed that his wikidata edits (and attitude) are being rather heavily critiqued on enwiki. Should admins take a look here? ArthurPSmith (talk) 15:20, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

Yes, if someone presents an allegation of malfeasance, with sound evidence, and of a kind potentially requiring admin intervention, here. (And if they notify him of stating such a discussion; which you have not done.) Otherwise, let's not respond to tittle-tattle. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:36, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
Well to be clearer then, @GerardM: - the following is Fram's latest response to you at enwiki: ""I made errors but I think they are within the range of what can be expected of either human editing or bot editing. The crux is that I have been bold and it resulted in a lot of content, content that allows Wikidata to grow and prosper." No, you have been bold again and again, resulting in way too much invalid content, often related to BLPs, which makes Wikidata (and its reputation) worse and which seriously reduces the appetite to include Wikidata data here (and which in most cases you left to others to correct even when the problems were pointed out). You are one of the most prolific Wikidata editors, and can continue largely unchecked. Someone with your track record would have been long restricted or blocked at enwiki. If Wikidata doesn't handle these kind of edits and editors any better, then it just can't be trusted enough to be used as a datasource, and your proposal (and comments) here is just a waste of time. Fram (talk) 08:08, 19 January 2017 (UTC)" - I find Fram's comments concerning. Perhaps a greater degree of care is warranted now than in wikidata's earlier years. Are you willing to change the way you do these imports? ArthurPSmith (talk) 15:23, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
For quite some time I am working in quite a different way... Check out my edits.. I am for instance involved in nobility in Asia.. It is often not simple to do the work that I do.. I am no longer doing big imports. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 18:34, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
Ok, good to know your style has changed, maybe you can communicate that a bit more clearly to the enwiki folks. I did take a look at some recent edits. I know putting sources on everything isn't easy, but... Is this information coming from the linked wikipedia articles or somewhere else? Did you confer with somebody else on the instance of (P31) and subclass of (P279) changes? I guess you are doing these things by hand and not with a bot or Quickstatements etc. Still I would hope that anything you do on a large scale would go through the same kind of community approval process that we use for granting bot flags. But if it's only affecting a few hundred items I suppose it's not really large scale and hopefully not an issue. ArthurPSmith (talk) 20:03, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
What I do with respect to instance of and subclass of is making things more consistent. I have done literally hundreds if not thousands of these in the area of nobility / political offices. The whole subclass system is a mess anyway and I did attempt to get us to talk about this; the only result was no explanations, referrals to vague externals. I do blog about the work that I do. As to the English, they are hell bent on keeping Wikidata out, they attack the person and not the arguments they largely lost my respect. My proposal is for us to concentrate on harmonising the content of Wikidata and Wikipedia and eventually more and more projects will use Wikidata for its content. Not here and now for English. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 07:26, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

I've been seeing the person behind this IP to be creatign tons of villages in the Philipines. I was reading them over and they automatically are notable. However, they are duplicates of already existing ones. For example, Q28465350 is a link to a settlement in the Phillipines but without sitelinks. Its a duplicate of Q7413900. It is one of a huge number of them. The massive volumen of edits is tedious. Going through some of them, I found they are all dups of existing ones. What do we do? MechQuester (talk) 05:00, 21 January 2017 (UTC)

Just another if you want an example. Q28465266 This item has no site links. I tried using google to look at other wikis but there is not any article at all. What a mess. MechQuester (talk) 05:09, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
wait. why are IPs allowed to create items anyway? Jc86035 (talk) 08:02, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
I have also noticed this recently since this editor frequently floods unpatrolled RC. However, the items are notable and the edit behavior by itself does not look like vandalism at all (though sources for the data would be nice). I would strongly suggest to help this editor with their project and maybe advice them to use an account. There is no reason to assume bad faith here, IMHO. —MisterSynergy (talk) 08:50, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
Btw. it’s not a static IP. There are a couple of IPs in the range 112.198.0.0/16 (works only with activated gadget) with similar three- or four-digit edit counts. I don’t know whether there are even more ranges. —MisterSynergy (talk) 08:58, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
I kind of prefer seeing an account instead using Ip. Its just.... some of them are dups and I wish the person can fix them instead. There are a bunch of errors. MechQuester (talk) 15:47, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
I agree that an accountable account would be nice instead of dynamic IP contributions. However, in this case we need to talk to this user first (as you briefly tried already), and that does not require sysop rights. Dupes are created by registered and even experienced users as well, this is to some extent unavoidable. —MisterSynergy (talk) 15:53, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
Q28465350 and Q7413900 don't look like duplicates to me, they do have the same name but they're in different provinces and on different islands. Q28465266 seems fine to me, sitelinks are useful, but they're not required. That one is listed on en:Talibon, Bohol#Barangays with the ID and population and also listed on en:List of barangays of Bohol - items like this are necessary if we ever want to be able to use Wikidata data to create lists and tables like that. From what I can see, their edits seem fine, the only two things that stand out to me are the descriptions (which don't need to include the label) and the lack of references (it would be great if they would add some references too, but it would be unfair to hold new users to a higher standard than experienced ones). - Nikki (talk) 20:22, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
ah ok. On 2nd look, they are different. Im just a little tired of seeing his edits in unpatrolled recent edits. Oh and is there a possibility it is a "group project" because the amount of energy and time (practically all the waking hours) to make all those edits is.... alot. User:Suik 2000

Suik 2000 is mass deleting valid data from several items related to tv series. He wants to delete them so that Spanish Wikipedia infobox for tv series doesn't show them and take them locally instead the way he seems fit to his taste, which, not counting the trouble of the mutilation of valid data here, is not allowed on Spanish Wikipedia and causes also technical troubles there (there's an automatic categorization on Spanish Wikipedia that depends on Wikidata to work, and if the Wikidata items are gone, related articles would be uncategorized). He has already been explained both here and in Wikipedia what's the trouble of his editions and warned that he must stop and restore everything, but it seems he won't listen and has started undoing some corrections that have been done to his deletions. I ask for some admin to tell him to stop (or stop him if there's no choice) before the damage gets worsened, both in Wikidata and Spanish Wikipedia.--Manbemel (talk) 00:47, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

@Suik 2000: if data are displayed in Spanish Wikipedia that you do not want to see, this has to be fixed over there, not in Wikidata. So, please stop delete statements and so on, otherwise we will have no choice and will have to block you here :/. Pamputt (talk) 06:58, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

From the conversation is hard to say what is the aim, @Infovarius, Fractaler: what do you want to accomplish with the conversation that you were having with TomT0m?--Micru (talk) 15:15, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
You'll notice that I explicitely asked him what he wanted. I provided him with answers, which are questioned over and over. I'm done with (naively) assuming good faith, we're passed that point. author  TomT0m / talk page 15:21, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
Coincidence ? About as the same time as this is happening, precisely one controversial topic is (re)opened on frwiki on something I personally added : https://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Discussion:Vincent_Courtillot&action=history . Nothing happened in there really since quite a while. I feel weirdly that people are searching controversy with ... me. Does this feeling violates any policy ? author  TomT0m / talk page 15:26, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
If you don't want to continue discussing it with them, then don't. It's not against the rules for someone to have weird opinions or disagree with someone else so there is not a lot admins can do just because someone refuses to have the same opinion as you. Make it clear to them that you don't want to continue discussing it and then stop replying. If they then start edit warring or harassing you by repeatedly pinging you about it or bringing it up on your talk page or whatever, that is something admins can actually do something about. - Nikki (talk) 15:51, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
It's definitivey not a question of opinion, but a question of behavior in conversation. I definitey don't blame them for their opinions. Which are, by the way, totally unknown. Nobody knows what they want, despite me or micru asking. It seems that we will not have an answer from them, even here. < span style="background-color:#E8E8E8;padding:3px;">author  TomT0m / talk page 15:58, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
@TomT0m:, actually I was not arguing with you, I was somewhat trolling him, a little. Because this user is well-known in Russian projects as quite strange human. He is nearly blocked from editing many topics (e.g. explicitly banned from editing categories) in Russian wikipedia and wiktionary. So if you feel uncomfortable just ... ignore him. He is trying not to violate his bans, and he give sometimes interesting ideas (~1% of all his ideas) so one can consider him ... funny. --Infovarius (talk) 19:04, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
Well, I'm the one feeling trolled and I don't find this funny. author  TomT0m / talk page 19:13, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
@Infovarius: What a judgment „he give sometimes interesting ideas (~1% of all his ideas)“. So most of the contribs of Fractaler are worthless at all. Fun is not included. --Succu (talk) 22:51, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, imho, most are worthless. But some edits makes me think about the basics of all the structuring, so this is fun for me. --Infovarius (talk) 13:04, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

Denmark

संजीव कुमार messed up with Denmark Q35 and Kingdom of Denmark Q756617, not moving all the iw's to the right querry. Can somebody fix it?Ionutzmovie (talk) 00:24, 26 January 2017 (UTC) can someone translate the text??? MechQuester (talk) 03:09, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

There is nothing to translate, that is the username of the person who messed things up. You did nothing good by reverting. ro:Danemarca should be linked with Q35, not with Q756617, which reffers to Greenland, Denmark and the Faroe Islands, see es:Reino de Dinamarca, so by reverting my edit you did worse. Just don't do things if you don't know how they should be done.Ionutzmovie (talk) 08:05, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

83.165.188.102

Can someone please ban the above url and protect Luis Carrero Blanco (Q313117)? The item is frequently vandalized by Spanish speaking people.--Micru (talk) 15:20, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

I've protected the item for three months now. Let's see if the IP does more, I really start to think we should block Spanish IP ranges. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 15:25, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

Properties ready for creation

There are now over 50 proposals in Category:Properties ready for creation, with more due to be added imminently. That's the most there have ever been, since our initial set-up. Can someone start working on them, please? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:47, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

Property creators have been working through these, creating several new properties the last few days. Most of the ones in the category were just added (marked as ready) in the last day or two, I'm sure we'll get through them in a reasonable period of time. The reason for the large backlog is mainly GZWDer's 100 new proposals from about 10 days ago. ArthurPSmith (talk) 21:47, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

Veillg1

Please someone can give some reprimand to Veillg1. He don't merge items correcly [4], he add description with brackets [5] and finally worst of all he moved the descriptions and moved the interwikis from Rivière Antoine (Q20898530), a river of Quebec, to Antoine River (Q2853571) a river of Arkansas. VIGNERON and me tried to help him, but he don't awser to our advices [6]. --Fralambert (talk) 15:37, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

perhaps a block will get his attention. He probably does not see the yellow bits on the top of the screen. MechQuester (talk) 16:18, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

Vandalism.--Arbnos (talk) 20:08, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

For the first time in months, so? Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 20:09, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
Yes.--Arbnos (talk) 20:11, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
We don't usually take any action other than reverting the edits when it's just one user vandalising for a short period of time - most vandals get bored and go away after a few minutes. Thank you for taking the time to bring it to our attention though, and if that user comes back or other users start vandalising that item, please let us know. - Nikki (talk) 20:26, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
Clearly.--Arbnos (talk) 20:35, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
And since I created the item, it is on my watchlist, so that I will likely notice if things go badly out of hand.--Ymblanter (talk) 21:17, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
