Sockpuppetry from enwiki

User:Bossanoven was blocked on enwiki in February 2015 for sockpuppetry (their talk page access was removed in July because they made a petty/insulting comment). They are currently active on Wikidata. They are prolific enough to have their own long-term abuse page, dating to 2007. Another account associated with them, User:TX6785, was active on Wikidata until they were blocked on enwiki (for sockpuppetry) in October 2015. User:Award Tour 2.0 was created and blocked just before that user account, and there are several others that also made at least one edit to Wikidata during 2016. All of those accounts appear to have been created for block evasion on the English Wikipedia.

Is this grounds for blocking or a global lock? I have no evidence that Bossanoven is currently abusing multiple accounts, and it's not clear to me if their current behaviour is within the purview of the global locking policy (although it's abundantly clear that they have multiple user accounts, and Bossanoven's editing period overlaps all of the aforementioned accounts'). They have had user rights granted to them, automatically or otherwise, on multiple WMF wikis. Jc86035's alternate account (talk) 05:51, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

@Jc86035 (1): ✓ Done, Wikidata:Blocking policy state that: "Users or IP addresses should not be blocked solely for behaviour or actions on other projects. As an exception to this, if an account with a history of cross-wiki or single project abuse shows signs of continuing that pattern on Wikidata, they may be blocked here without a pattern of local abuse." I find that User:Bossanoven shows signs of continuing that pattern on Wikidata. Dan Koehl (talk) 06:44, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
@Dan Koehl: Thanks. I have requested a global lock for their accounts on Meta. Jc86035's alternate account (talk) 09:01, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

Block 87.41.92.0/24 again

Hello,
The IP ranges 87.41.92.0/24, 86.42.179.0/24 and 2001:BB6:8D0F:A858::/64 have many common points:

  1. since April 2018, they are removing valid sitelinks
  2. the Whois tool says that these IP are from Dublin, Ireland
  3. they have been blocked ([1], [2] and [3]) but are always coming back
  4. they have already been mentioned in Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive/2018/04#87.41.92.204, Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive/2018/04#Block of IP 87.41.92.141, Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive/2018/05#Chronic vandalism of 2001:BB6:8D0F:A858:0:0:0:0/64 (sitelinks remove), Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive/2018/06#Block 87.41.92.0/24 again, and at least 86.42.179.183...
  5. they vandalize the same items: Knocked Up (Q222800), American Pie Presents: The Book of Love (Q466291), May 11 (Q2558), May 12 (Q2559), August 11 (Q2778), February 26 (Q2359)...

At the moment, only 87.41.92.0/24 is active. Could you block 87.41.92.0/24 again (at least)?

Cycn should show more courtesy to "IP" editors, whose contributions here are as valid and welcome as anyone else's. comments and edit summaries to the effect that they "don't talk with numbers", or "don't talk to numbers, just to people", are unacceptable Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:15, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
I respectfully disagree, with you and anyone with that opinion who doesn't 'hide' (that's how I feel about it) behind a irrecognizable IP. As long as an IP doesn't remove data without giving a source I'll respect their edits, but otherwise it just looks like vandalism and if someone doesn't want to use a alias like you and me (and they choose to do so) I'd advise on avoiding making edits look like that. For now the issue is resolved and I'm out of options to be uncourtious any more. - cycŋ - (talkcontribslogs) 17:06, 13 October 2018 (UTC)

Vandalism from Chile continues

As I mentioned before, there is a wave of vandalism coming from Chile, attacking Wikidata pages so the vandalism can appear on Wikidata. A few days ago, a newspaper promoted vandalism on Wikipedia and that has led to more articles attacked than usual. You can see examples here and here.

Now, someone changed Lima (Q2868) and that reflected when someone asks the capital of Peru in Chile, which has sparked some complaints from Peru. This will continue now that this is now published in several websites, so the vandalism will continue. I don't know what is the best administrative measure, but I think at this point, blocking all IPs from Chile (or even all IPs in general) for one or two weeks is not a bad idea. If not, we will continue receiving vandalism from people that want to become famous and our projects get a bad reputation. --B1mbo (talk) 17:23, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

@B1mbo: To block all IPs is something to which a lot of people will object, but I have blocked some /16 Chilean subranges for a week (for a month if they were blocked a week ago as well) and invite other admins to do the same. Mahir256 (talk) 17:53, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

(I'm on vacation atm so only a short reply.) We've put a lot of thought and work into data quality over the past 2 years but apparently it is not enough. I'm absolutely willing to spend resources (and will do so) on more things in this direction but I'm not sure how to tackle this particular issue. If you or someone else has ideas for what could work and would be acceptable please let me know. One thing I wanted to look into more next is phabricator:T205783. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 16:04, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
@Lydia Pintscher (WMDE): In my experience, a huge amount of vandalism comes from IPs in Spanish-speaking countries and edits from IPs in Spanish speaking countries are almost always vandalism. The Spanish Wikipedia has a prominent link to edit Wikidata in their infoboxes and that is probably how a lot of those vandals arrive at Wikidata. You could ask them to not show that link for anonymous users. - Nikki (talk) 22:11, 7 October 2018 (UTC)

It could be items used as values on such pages. Frequently I notice odd edits on given names. --- Jura 15:26, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
To me it does indeed look like a good next step to hide these edit links on Spanish Wikipedia for protected pages. That's a sensible thing to do anyway. Does anyone know who would be a good person to talk to on Spanish Wikipedia? I'm happy to have a chat with them then. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 15:52, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
Given that there's no evidence of a link between protected pages and vandalised items, I'm sceptical that only doing it for protected pages will do much, but I guess we can try. Maybe @Abián: can help. - Nikki (talk) 14:06, 14 October 2018 (UTC)
Sure, I'm available to have a chat and help as much as I can. Wikidata's value is widely questioned from the Spanish Wikipedia, mainly because of this problem, which gets worse over time. Some users want to stop using Wikidata or use it to a lesser extent, but this isn't a solution, just a step back. --abián 14:53, 14 October 2018 (UTC)
@Abián: Would you look into es:Módulo_discusión:Ficha#"editar_datos_en_Wikidata". It might need some update since then. --- Jura 15:04, 14 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, I also noticed an unusual wave of vandalism from Chilean IPs. But I am afraid that many vandalisms remained unnoticed or covered by bot edits.--Jklamo (talk) 08:27, 3 October 2018 (UTC)
  • Maybe it's time to tell eswiki that they should remove the "go-vandalize-Wikidata" link on protected pages there. Otherwise maybe we should stop making Wikidata available to eswiki on a live basis. --- Jura 16:12, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
What do yo mean by a "go-vandalize-Wikidata" link? --B1mbo (talk) 17:00, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
@B1mbo: I believe Jura refers to the pencil icons next to certain entries in an infobox, as well as the link 'editar datos en Wikidata' in the same infobox (such as those you see when looking at Sebastián Piñera (Q306)'s eswiki page). Mahir256 (talk) 17:09, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
  • Yes, if you log out and look at the eswiki article linked to the item you mentioned [4], the only invitation a person (or a vandal) sees to edit is 'editar datos en Wikidata'. Supposedly, eswiki concluded that only vandalism is likely. Accordingly, I don't see why we should have a link labeled that way to Wikidata. The tooltips on the icons could be limited to "ver" as well, but maybe this is less a problem. --- Jura 17:15, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
I have protected a number of items, due to this kind of vandalism, and hope I have done this, supported by a consensus regarding the latest increased vandalism? I dont think such protection is controversial, but would feel its important with someone confirming this is a correct way of handling the situation? Dan Koehl (talk) 11:00, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
Other people might judge things differently, but my rule of thumb is that anything with vandalism from multiple IPs/accounts (at least 3) within a recent period of time (up to about 2 weeks) is a good candidate for protection. I don't protect items unless there's evidence of multiple IPs/accounts targeting a page, because often there won't be any further vandalism anyway and we don't want to prevent good edits unnecessarily (and if a single IP/account is repeatedly targeting an item then we can block the user rather than protect the page). Looking at a couple of the things you protected, I would definitely have protected Jeff Bezos (Q312556) (probably for a month rather than a week given that it had been going on for over a week already) but I wouldn't have protected Malleco Viaduct (Q3085334) because there was only one edit. - Nikki (talk) 12:10, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your input @Nikki:, point taken, and I will use protection when only several IP are involved. Dan Koehl (talk) 09:16, 14 October 2018 (UTC)
I think we need more semi-protected items. All items with links to eswiki indef/longterm protected articles should be semi-protected on Wikidata as well. From my experience 80%+ vandalism is from IPs from Spanish-speaking countries, which is not surprising, as eswiki is first wide audience wiki massively using Wikidata (which is great). With wider usage of Wikidata in wikis we must be prepared for even more vandalism.--Jklamo (talk) 15:35, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
The problem is that semi-protection often prevents page moves from being reflected in Wikidata or new sitelinks from being added, because many Wikipedia editors are not autoconfirmed here. We need a solution to that first. Also, as I mentioned above, most of the vandalised items I checked were not protected on eswiki. - Nikki (talk) 13:13, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

Edit war on Norway (Q20) and the use of official name (P1448)

Can someone have a look at the edits on the item Norway with respect to the use of official name. Breg Pmt (talk) 12:48, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

@Jeblad: should know what he is doing.--Ymblanter (talk) 19:44, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
OMG! Ymblanter! :D
I believe Pmt is referring to an edit war that is slightly older. I did a change on preferred value [5] as I asked the Norwegian language council about correct name for Norway. There are listed three names for Kvensk language. I did not want to mark the other two as deprecated, as I'm not sure that would be correct. Kvensk is an official minority language in Norway.
The older edit war has its roots in an old dispute on the correct interpretation of "official name". Is it the language bodies of Norway (ie. the state itself) that defines the official name? Is it some kind of translation into some other language, and that states official language body? And so fort. I'm not sure that dispute is setteled. I said what I believed at nowiki, that is the first one, and TommyG went on and removed a lot of statements. I saw the changes, but would not interfere.
I believe the only solution that would work is to filter down the list of names somehow, and probably locally at nowiki. I doubt it is possible to figure out a "one size fits all in this case". Except I do know the discussion will go on for some time at nowiki. Hopefully it will not spill over to more items than Norway (Q20).
Just for the record; Pmt know what he does (unless he disagree with me!) Jeblad (talk) 20:09, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
Based on the English and German descriptions of official name (P1448), I would say that TommyG's edits were correct. If people want the property to be used for other languages, the descriptions need updating. I would suggest starting a discussion somewhere (on the property's talk page with a link from project chat would probably be best) about it. - Nikki (talk) 21:40, 21 October 2018 (UTC)

Brett Kavanaugh and vandalism

This is the first one, which I already reverted.--Underlying lk (talk) 20:50, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

Neo-Jay is not to blame for anything here. The vandalism took place in rapist (Q22962951) (history) by IPs changing the English label of that item to "Brett Kavanaugh". All reverted now, thanks for reporting anyway. —MisterSynergy (talk) 20:56, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

Hey, I was wondering if we could semi or fully protect authority file (Q36524). The labels of this item are used on Commons in the highly-visible templates {{Authority control}} and {{Wikidata Infobox}}. Earlier today, an IP user changed the English label of this item, and this incorrect label began appearing all over the place on Commons. I realize it's a bit odd to request protection for something that's highly visible on a different wiki, but the alternative solution is that Commons would have to maintain another identical list of dozens of language labels. • Category:Scuole Grandi of Venice (Q30696402)

The best italian definition can be Scuole di devozione, arti e mestieri a Venezia [confraternities and guilds in Venice] or also Scuole di arti e mestieri e devozioni a Venezia.

According to the Decision of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress on Approving the Co-operation Arrangement between the Mainland and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on the Establishment of the Port at the West Kowloon Station of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link for Implementing Co-location Arrangement (English Translation), “the establishment of the Mainland Port Area at the West Kowloon Station does not alter the boundary of the administrative division of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.” 210.3.92.210 09:40, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

new section

The West Kowloon Station Mainland Port Area is located in the administrative territorial entity of Hong Kong. As stated by the response from the Government, the implementation of co-location arrangement at the West Kowloon Station of the XRL does not involve realignment of the HKSAR boundary. This is consistent with the views of the NPCSC as stated in the preamble of the Decision that “the establishment of the Mainland Port Area at the West Kowloon Station does not alter the boundary of the administrative division of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region”. As such, the HKSAR Government considers that the purpose of Clause 6(2) is to articulate an important point of law that the co-location arrangement does not affect the HKSAR boundary. 223.17.65.23 07:18, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

Anyway, the existing of Vatican City (Q237) does also not affect boundary lines of the Republic of Italy, but therefore Vatican City (Q237)country (P17)Italy (Q38)? The fact is that this is under Shenzhen Government control, not Hong Kong Government, and another fact is that by entering this area, your travel document (Q2616578) will be stamped a "深圳西九龙 Shenzhen West Kowloon". --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 14:20, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

Section 6(2) of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link (Co-location) Ordinance: “Subsection (1) does not affect the boundary of the administrative division of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region promulgated by the Order of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China No. 221 dated 1 July 1997 and published as S.S. No. 5 to Gazette No. 6/1997 of the Gazette.” 223.17.65.23 14:38, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

@223.17.65.23: As description said, non of Hong Kong legal documents are applied to this area, whether you think this is fair or not, and even you have rights to claim Hong Kong independence (Q113301), there's nothing to do with the usages of properties, located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) is mainly for the de facto administrative entity, optionally for the de jure administrative entity, but never for just geographical places. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 14:43, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
Also, please do not remove the warning templates that you've got, that's not civility. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 14:46, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

There is no "深圳西九龙 Shenzhen West Kowloon", confirmed by the Shenzhen General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection 223.17.65.23 14:48, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

Then what's this entry stamp meaning? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 14:50, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

香港特別行政區行政區域界線不受影響,因此内地口岸區實際上依然是香港特別行政區的一部分,政府文件也認爲這是個重要的法律觀點,你知道嗎?223.17.65.23 15:06, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

From my point of view, Liu is right, this area is an enclave that is controlling by Mainland China departments, just like Vatican City which is by geographical located in Italy, But also a country (and that's the shortest country of world). --117.13.95.75 02:10, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

Deletion of database and hundreds of linked items

Hello,

I created a new large number of networked items starting with Q48843087 Buddhist Matikas (Lists) in the spring of 2018. I added to it throughout the summer and even accessed it publicly in September of this year. Today, I went online and couldn't find any of the items, nor could I log into my account: Username = Buddhist.Matikas. This is months and months of work. I received no notice prior to deletion. I created a companion google website https://sites.google.com/view/buddhist-matikas/home with its own email address: buddhist.matikas@gmail.com and didn't receive notice prior to deletion. Please advise how to reinstate my account as well as all of the items.

I am a real person and can be reached via either the buddhist.matikas@gmail.com or my personal email address: upjnkml@gmail.com. I am a student planning to pursue graduate studies and am using what I created in the spring but can't access any of what I created.

I need your tool to achieve multiple things as outlined in my webpage. Please help.

Thank you.  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by 142.150.24.84 (talk • contribs) at 19:58, 31 October 2018‎ (UTC).

I don’t see a reason why you are unable to log into your account Buddhist.Matikas as it is not blocked. User:Sjoerddebruin has deleted many (or all) of the items, so he can probably explain the problem to you. —MisterSynergy (talk) 20:22, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
The items weren't sourced or properly structured, please see our notability policy and Help:Sources. I wasn't aware of any external usage, but it's much easier to just start over again as the previous situation was quite a mess. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 15:08, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
The deletion of Q48843087 (and, presumably, the other items referred to) does not appear to have been discussed at Wikidata:Requests for deletions. Since those deletions have now been challenged, the items should be restored, and if necessary sent to that page, in order that the community decide collectively what should be done with them (i.e. whether to delete, or improve, them). In response to your statement that "The previous situation was quite a mess" and "much easier to start over again" --- No it wasn't a mess and not it's not easier to start over again. The "mess" was because of Wikidata's capability to support many-to-many linkages and be a publicly editable database -- the network that I was creating required both of these capabilities. And, I have no problem updating each item with proper sourcing. Keep in mind -- as I am a new user, I will probably need help with what is an acceptable source. Can I source a textbook instead of other wiki sites? Not clear. I am creating a network database that holds information for multi-linked items that are from ancient Buddhist texts. Instead of arbitrarily deleting items, a message would have helped clarify the issues. Please ... please ... please restore all items! And provide guidance. It would be much appreciated.  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Buddhist.Matikas (talk • contribs) at 19:18, 4 November 2018‎ (UTC).

Why haven't these items been recreated, yet? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:29, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

I have restored this section from the archive. I am surprised to see that the items have not yet been restored. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:12, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
