Update currentDate gadget to not load code from user namespace

Can someone change MediaWiki:Gadget-currentDate.js to directly contain the code of the gadget, instead of loading it from User:TMg/currentDate.js? This is a fairly frequently used gadget (currently 330 active users according to Special:GadgetUsage), and while I don’t have any particular reason to distrust TMg, I have no reason to especially trust them either, and I’d feel more at ease if the ability to edit this gadget’s code was restricted to administrators, as it should be for all gadgets. —Galaktos (talk) 20:13, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

@Tagishsimon: Doesn’t look like vandalism to me. Please explain why you think it is vandalism.Jasper Deng (talk) 02:44, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
@Jasper Deng: The edit summaries, and the fact that they're reverts of User:Renamerr and User:Daniel Mietchen, both of whom know what they're doing. Also look at the earliest few edits. --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:46, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
In this multilingual environment, I don't see how the substance of changing the descriptions to apparently just read "scientific work" (which is a valid description on Wikidata) is vandalism. "Mucho gay" can be just an inappropriate way for the user to express their grievances against the edit. It is a fallicious argumentum ad hominem to judge the edits based on who makes them; what if it were an experienced editor making the exact same edits? Certainly they would be warned against the edit summary "mucho gay" but it probably wouldn't be considered vandalism.
This, of course, is assuming this user was not an LTA, which however seems to be the case. Still, I hope you see where I am coming from.--Jasper Deng (talk) 06:58, 15 December 2018 (UTC)

Wrong edits from User:John Cummings

John Cummings have imported in Wikidata the Hungarian sites on protectedplant.net with wrong properties. His import have used property Asset of cultural interest code (P808), but the correct property should be: WDPA ID (P809). For example see Gerecse Protected Landscape Area (Q1009672) There You could verify both the links.

I wrote to John Cummings one weeks ago, but he doesn't pay any attention on my remarks. This consent about 1000 items! Texaner (talk) 12:51, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Do we have a list of affected items? —MisterSynergy (talk) 13:07, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks very much for spotting this @Texaner:, I'm fairly confident this was caused when I was using Mix n' Match but then hardly any of it has been matched https://tools.wmflabs.org/mix-n-match/#/catalog/452. This should give us a list of affected items though. I'm not sure how to fix it, how do I delete a Mix n' Match catalogue? . --John Cummings (talk) 13:42, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
This is correct, it is a unlucky typo in Mix n' Match, unfortunately I have also no idea how correct them. Texaner (talk) 15:43, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
@Magnus Manske: are you able to fix this typo in the backend of Mix n' Match pretty please? We need Asset of cultural interest code (P808) to be corrected to WDPA ID (P809) in https://tools.wmflabs.org/mix-n-match/#/catalog/452 , if not please can you delete it and I'll redo it. --John Cummings (talk) 12:55, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
Question @Texaner: and @MisterSynergy:, if I do all the remaining matching is it possible for someone here to use a tool to do the corrections using my edit history to see the items? --John Cummings (talk) 10:15, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
From what I understand, there are way less than 1000 items affected. Your faulty M'n'm catalog has 875 entries, of which only 129 have been matched (mostly by User:Texaner). The P808 covi report also does not list many format violations. I can move wrongly imported values from P808 to P809, but I need a list of item/value pairs to work on. Something like Q1009672 -> 9565 from this diff, but for all affected items. If you could provide such a list, I’d be able to do the repair.
M'n'm has a catalog editor where one could update the target property, but unfortunately it does not work. Maybe someone can file a bug report in Magnus' repo. —MisterSynergy (talk) 11:11, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
Hi @MisterSynergy:, thanks very much, I was able to make the change (perhaps its a rights issue and because I made the catalogue I have the power?). Unfortunately this has unmatched everything that was matched, I will put a bit of time in to do some matching but I don't want to do the hard ones because I can't read Hungarian. --John Cummings (talk) 11:37, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
It didn’t update, you’re again importing to the wrong property. There is a bug report meanwhile. —MisterSynergy (talk) 11:42, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks @MisterSynergy:, what a pickle... --John Cummings (talk) 11:44, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
I deleted those six new items you just created. —MisterSynergy (talk) 11:49, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

@John Cummings, Texaner: I have moved all wrong imports to the correct property, i.e. there are no Asset of cultural interest code (P808) claims left to repair. The only thing still to fix is the M'n'm catalog, but my admin tools do not help there at all :-) —MisterSynergy (talk) 14:25, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

Block an user for excessive vandalism

User:Kurrop started a continous changes and a reversion war on items related with President of the Generalitat of Catalonia (Q16933549) and its presidents, as Pau Claris (Q2532926). He/she doesn't attend the reference on item and provide their own version of the history. Despite my warnings to discuss before reverting and my arguments to the discussion, their reversals have continued. The few number of editions of this user make clear his intentions. Could you please block him/her ?. Thanks, Amadalvarez (talk) 14:47, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

After editing the article I started a discussion on the matter giving references on books and articles that support my edition. User User:Amadalvarez has omitted those references and started an edit war. Please take that into consideration and block the article until an agreement is reached. --Kurrop (talk) 14:59, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
Yes, please. Block the item as is was before User:Kurrop started reversions. Then we can talk (as we are doing yet) about his proposals. Thanks Amadalvarez (talk) 15:02, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
I think the right option is to block the article after my edition as I have given references that didn't exist in the article before my edition. --Kurrop (talk) 15:05, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
While we are discussing, User:Kurrop follows vandalizing items. Until now: President of the Generalitat of Catalonia (Q16933549), Pau Claris (Q2532926), Berenguer de Cruïlles (Q1924075), Eugenio Jofra Bofarull (Q263011), Garcia Gil de Manrique y Maldonado (Q8963474). Vandalize items and force to discussion is not a best practice, is just a troll profile. Thanks to paid attention and act. Amadalvarez (talk) 17:41, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
It seems User:Kurrop is trying to break consensus about Catalan history deleting number of historical Presidents of Generalitat, which is published both by law and historical sources, we've asked him/she to stop, please take in consideration some kind of control on the topic. Kippelboy (talk) 04:23, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

The item President of the Generalitat of Catalonia (Q16933549) is now fully protected for a week due to edit warring, as there was continuous activity regarding the presence of a reference while the issue was discussed on the item talk page. If there is a consensus regarding that reference, please let me know to remove the protection then. —MisterSynergy (talk) 11:03, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

@MisterSynergy: Thanks, I'll try to get consensus. But is difficult to do it with a troll. His only goal (look his editions) is make noise and create fake version of the catalan history . Amadalvarez (talk) 11:16, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
@Amadalvarez: Do you try to get a consensus insulting me? What a funny way... As I have already said and I am still waiting for an answer in the discussion page, you are not giving any reference to support your nationalist way of thinking. The historiography speaks clearly about this issue what you are defending is just rewriting the history itself.--Kurrop (talk) 12:13, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

Please moderate disruptive and disorganising activities of Andreasmperu. Thanks.DDupard (talk) 23:07, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

I’ve tried to explain him both on my talk page and on edit summaries that he’s adding wrong statements for some properties (for instance, adding theatrical scenery (Q352867) as a statement for genre (P136) when that item is not about a genre), or adding wrong properties for certain items (a property for items about people on an item about an organisation), but he won’t listen. Probably a small block will be needed since he doesn’t seem able to stop. --Andreasm háblame / just talk to me 23:19, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
@Andreasmperu: If you think the item DDupard is using is the wrong item, why not answer the question they asked you on your talk page and help them find the right item? Repeated reverts are rarely a good way to solve anything. Once the right item to use has been found, it's easy to query for the items which need updating and fix them. - Nikki (talk) 10:34, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
@Nikki: Here I stated what was the problem with his edit, and once again even more precisely. In both cases, the user just reverted to the error. I stopped undoing his edits when I realised he wouldn’t understand reasons. Same story with Séeberger brothers (Q3089468). I encourage you to remove the mistakes that were put back, because the user doesn’t seem willing to stop edit warring. Problem is even bigger: a quick check on his edits shows other mistakes, such as adding an occupation to items about businesses or having confused ideas about how to use other properties. Again, I have mentioned explicitly what the problem is even though I don’t normally reply to aggressive messages. Andreasm háblame / just talk to me 17:07, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

Cambiar nombre y darle protección contra traslados

Hola, quisiera que algun administrador le cambie el nombre al articulo siguiente Q7132566 por (Papelón con limón), y que le asignen la protección contra traslados. Gracias. – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Lobit2 (talk • contribs).

@Lobit2: Q7132566 es el ID del elemento, y Papelón con limón es su etiqueta, es decir, su nombre, y ya se llama así. Sobre lo del traslado, aquí no se realizan traslados en elementos, sino que se unen con otros si es necesario. Esteban16 (talk) 20:10, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
✓ Done, the user wished the item to be "moved" to "Papelón con limón" and asked for a move protection and I told him how it works here. Esteban16 (talk) 20:10, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

MovieFex (talkcontribslogs) keeps reverting an affiliate link into Lumber Kings (Q59456334). He has been warned not to do so on de-wiki. XenonX3 (talk) 17:26, 15 December 2018 (UTC)

So affiliate links are valid content now? XenonX3 (talk) 17:34, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
This site contains a trailer and a lot of information about the film and the actors. And I was not warned in dewiki for this, it's a lie. Further on the link to this site is from Filmportal (External links).-- MovieFex (talk) 17:41, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
The website is an online shop that sells firewood. The subpage that MovieFex linked contains a description of a movie about lumberjacks. On that page you can either buy the movie DVDs or firewood via Amazon (so that the owner of brennholzkaufen.net earns a little bit of money from every transaction). The actual movie information is inferior to the other pages linked on Q59456334 and in the de-wiki article. The page on brennholzkaufen was obviously made to lure people that are interested in the movie into clicking the affiliate links and to buy the firewood or DVDs. XenonX3 (talk) 17:52, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
The question is if it describes the movie or not. If it's just a copy of content from elsewhere, it is not of much use. We link to Amazon's IMDb, so we don't really have a problem with affiliates. As you know, Amazon sells everything. We wouldn't link to Imdb with someone's affiliate code in it... --- Jura 17:57, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
@Jura1: The movie info is a copyvio from the official movie website that was shut down a few years ago. The owner of the online shop has bought the official website's URL die-koenige-der-nutzholzgewinnung.de and put up a redirect to his shop on there. XenonX3 (talk) 18:04, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
And what is the problem now? The site and the informations are available again. --MovieFex (talk) 18:14, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
E.g. Lexicon of international films (Q1822317) + Online-Filmdatenbank (Q1669874) are reputable filmwebsites, and they sell DVD's or have got links to amazon etc. --MovieFex (talk) 18:01, 15 December 2018 (UTC)

Replaced the link to official website (archive). -- MovieFex (talk) 18:26, 15 December 2018 (UTC)

The link MovieFex had added is not a reputable website. The trailer is available without the affiliate links at other websites or at Youtube. It is true that there are reputable websites that do have affiliate links as well, but that doesn't mean that any website is reputable that was set up with a hijacked URL and stolen content in order to lure people into a shop. MovieFex knew all of this because he was told at de.wp, yet he waged an edit war here against multiple users, see history. Thereby he has wasted precious time of several people -- before he finally removed the link himself that others had removed before and he had restored multiple times. I'm not familiar with the policies of Wikidata, but in other projects this behaviour leads to a block. MovieFex doesn't accept help and reacts in a spiteful way to corrections. This has made collaboration with him very cumbersome in the past. --Sitacuisses (talk) 23:48, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
Xenon seems to misunderstand what a affiliate link is. One can't remove content just because one has a dispute with a user on another Wikimedia website. Please stop importing your disputes to this wiki. Are you aware that U-tube inserts ads into videos they show? --- Jura 05:46, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
Jura1, the link didn't get deleted because of a dispute on another Wikimedia website, but because it's a hijacked domain and not a reputable site. At en.wp, the guideline for hijacked domains is very clear: "it needs to be handled as a dead link". Please point me to the guidelines for external links at Wikidata. All I found is that links should lead to reputable sites. Maybe some further explanation is required. Please tell me if you don't agree with any of the following points:
  • The official site of the movie used to be http://www.die-koenige-der-nutzholzgewinnung.de/. This is still listed at Filmportal.de: Right click the link "Offizielle Website" (bottom right), copy the link adress and paste it into some text editor or your browser.
  • That URL has been hijacked and is now a redirect to https://brennholzkaufen.net/die-koenige-der-nutzholzgewinnung/.
  • Since films usually get marketed only for a limited period, their official domains tend to expire afterwards.
  • Expired domains tend to be hijacked in order to benefit from the incoming links that persist. Here's an article from 2002 that describes how domains get hijacked by e.g. porn or gambling sites. This should be considered common knowledge among experienced internet users by now.
  • Domain hijacking is a scamming scheme.
  • In our case, the Domain was hijacked by a traffic aggregator who assembled some content still related to the orignal link in order to gain traffic for his affiliate shopping links. Brennholzkaufen.net ("buy-firewood.net") is not dedicated to movies, but to selling firewood.
  • That content is no original content, it's not official either. The text mainly consists of the actors' and director's short biographies that don't say anything about the movie itself.
  • The content is available from reputable film sites like moviepilot.de and kino.de and the official press sheet, which is still online. There is no need to resort to linking a hijacked domain.
  • Wikimedia projects should avoid supporting scamming schemes in order not to risk their own reputation.
  • Several experienced internet users removed the link and MovieFex waged an edit war to restore it. --Sitacuisses (talk) 10:23, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
So you disagree with the explanation given by Xenon above as well? The URL you are describing is different from the one MovieFex added, but I updated the URL on the film item per your explanation. --- Jura 07:43, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
@Jura1: I don't disagree with XenonX3, and I don't know how you can come up with that idea while we both agree that the link needs to be deleted. It has now also been deleted from Filmportal.de, while you still find it in archived versions of that page. It has been deleted from IMDb within minutes after my request. Every database to be taken seriously deletes the link without delay, and now you add it to the Wikidata item again after even MovieFex had deleted it? Seriously? Have you actually clicked on that link and looked at the result? The URL is now a redirect to some shopping site, which is obviously not the official site and doesn't belong into that field. I asked you to point me towards the guidelines for external links at Wikidata and I am still waiting for an answer. If Wikidata accepts spam links, this will prompt questions about how useful Wikidata can be for Wiki projects that have strict anti-spam rules. --Sitacuisses (talk) 14:19, 17 December 2018 (UTC)

I would like to add one more language:

  1. ml:ഘടകം:ISO 3166/data/US

 – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Adithyak1997 (talk • contribs).

This was reported at w:Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Cannot add language link to a module where I wrote:
"/US" in the page name is matching [uú]so? in Special:AbuseFilter/36. There is apparently a language where /us subpages are used for template documentation or similar. Wikidata administrators are exempted from the filter.
Special:Search/Module ISO 3166/data finds hundreds of other subpages of the module with Wikidata items, e.g. Module:ISO 3166/data/GB (Q56697717). PrimeHunter (talk) 16:03, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

PrimeHunter identified the problem to be the regex match [uú]so? in Special:AbuseFilter/36 preventing "/US" subpages from being created. This probably shouldn't be happening, as the match seems to target template documentation pages for Catalan and some other languages. I think either an admin should manually create the item for now (this should really be trivial and I'm surprised no one's done it after two weeks), or the matching rule should be modified to be more specific (e.g. by changing it to uso|ús, or by making the match case-sensitive). Jc86035 (talk) 16:09, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

Special:AbuseFilter/36 displays MediaWiki:Abusefilter-warning-subpages which has another problem. The message can be displayed at other wikis but then the wikilinks will go to the local wiki instead of Wikidata. Suppose you click "Add links" at en:Template:Infobox album/doc and try to connect it to simple:Template:Infobox album/doc. The links currently in MediaWiki:Abusefilter-warning-subpages will go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Wikidata:Notability and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikidata:Administrators%27_noticeboard. It can be fixed by prefixing the links with d:, i.e. d:Wikidata:Notability and d:Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard. Prefixing with wikidata: fails here at Wikidata but d: works both here and elsewhere. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:16, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
Pinging @Matěj Suchánek: if he can agree to cancel "us", since a lot of wikis are really using "/US" for the United States stuffs (see Template:Inflation/US (Q17233158), Template:ConvertAbbrev/ISO 3166-2/US (Q19820633), Template:Globalize/US (Q14469177), Template:Convert/sp/us (Q7654798), Template:Convert/Maintenance/outputs/US (Q7650786) and Template:Jct/abbrev/USA/US (Q14937853) for example), not "documentation of Templates and/or Modules" in Catalan. --218.68.229.88 07:28, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Another way is to temporary move these pages to titles that don't have "/US", then item creation of them can be possible, and after linking them, move these pages back to the original titles? --218.68.229.88 07:34, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Please stop batches and block account

@Jura1: it looks like the user was already blocked once. Is this still an issue? It looks like they were last active yesterday adding a bunch of language of work or name (P407) statements. Are these the edits you were talking about or not? They all seem to match the datamodel as far as I can see, but I'm guessing you are talking about other edits? ·addshore· talk to me! 16:54, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
@Addshore: Yes, it keeps running once in a while and re-adding stuff that was already removed. I don't know if it's the user doing it or QuickStatements re-starting. Datamodel is at Wikidata:WikiProject Movies/Properties and doesn't not suggest to duplicate statements in P407. I was trying to figure out if the user was going to add something else (which could be interesting), but apparently not. The user isn't really responding and just running batches once in a while. Not that it matters, but it reminds me of an account we had blocked last year for similar edits. Could you revert the batches and block the account until someone figured out what they are trying to add? --- Jura 17:01, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
@Jura1: I looked into this a little more today and it would seem that these properties are going to be merged anyway? Per Wikidata:Properties_for_deletion#language_of_work_or_name_(P407)_and_original_language_of_work_(P364)? ·addshore· talk to me! 16:44, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
@Addshore: Not that I'm aware of. You might want to look into the deletion discussion. It's already not clear if it works for books, but, as books might end up in a separate project, it doesn't really matter there. --- Jura 16:48, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
@Jura1, Addshore: Keep in mind that this issue of P407 and P364 (at the top of this noticeboard) may well be why Pasleim hasn't fixed issues with his bots (such as DeltaBot no longer auto-marking requests on WD:RFD as 'done'), given that his last two edits on this wiki pertain to this property issue. Mahir256 (talk) 16:58, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
I'm not really sure how this pertains to the above account. Do you have reason to believe they are linked? --- Jura 17:02, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
@Jura1: No, I am not attempting to link the actions of Pasleim and Amihan27 at all (though I wonder if the former's mention of 'the stubbornness of very few users' includes the actions of the latter). There was a mention--here, by Addshore--of the P407 and P364 issue separate from the section at the top of this noticeboard pertaining to it, so I found it necessary to bring up the connection between the P407 and P364 issue and Pasleim's recent absence. Mahir256 (talk) 17:08, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
Np. Can we make sure the batches wont run and revert the recent ones? --- Jura 17:11, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
There was another batch run yesterday apparently. I haven't had the time to look into all of the discussion below the request for deletion yet to see what was said. If it is decided here that they do all need to be reverted then sure I can help with the revert. It would be good to get some time and brainpower from other people here too ·addshore· talk to me! 10:21, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
  • These deletion requests have been made several times over the last 3 or so years. The fact there is one shouldn't have a negative impact on the consistent use of the existing model. We don't really need another Special:Contributions/Freakymovie-type account. Anyways, as a stop-gap, I undid one of the batches. --- Jura 10:57, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
I'm shocked how Jura1 discredits deletion discussion and ignores their outcome. For P364 and P407 their were two discussions. The first one was closed as undecided because during the discussion a third langauge property on request of Jura1 was created (P:P2439) which changed the basis of the proposal [1]. The second discussion was closed with the decision to merge the two properties [2]. It does not have any negative impact on the existing data model although the rules for movies have to be adapted. --Pasleim (talk) 16:03, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
As far as I recall, the implementation discussion came to the conclusion that the movies part shouldn't be changed. Or did I miss something? It's not entirely clear what happens to books, but a new wikibase for these probably solves it. It's true that P2439 got deleted, but apparently, there also the implementation remains unclear and hasn't really worked so far. Maybe it's better to focus on attempting to built consistent items than merge somewhat random properties together. If you also need help with the P2439 deletion, I can try to help get it sorted out.
Let's try to keep WikiProject Movies in shape. Maybe we can get some more people to help with WikiProject Books. --- Jura 16:19, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
Stop with your perfidious comments! I don't need help with P2439, the property got deleted and nobody is missing it. WikiProject Books does not need your help neither since no books use P364 and thus are not affected by deleting P364. On the other hand, as I stated in my comment from end of November [3], 9.8K TV series used P407, 19.1K TV series used P364. With Amihan27 those number changed but it is the evidence that alredy before that user the WikiProject Movies was out of shape. --Pasleim (talk) 16:58, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
I don't see your proposal for the P2439 implemented. Did it change or have you abandoned it?
The question is not which property WikiProject Books uses, but if it uses it correctly. As I recall, you wrote that it wasn't in scope of the books conversion to ensure that the language is actual correct in regards to the items. For movies, I'd rather not have this now or in the future.
It's true we hadn't cleanup up all damage by Special:Contributions/Freakymovie. Somehow admins didn't act in time and reversions hadn't been done by the relevant bot account owner. If you quote their edit statistics as movies being out of shape .. at least we see what you seem to support. --- Jura 17:15, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

@Addshore: No, it is not. We got a mail from Bell Resources Limited because we deleted Bell Resources, Bell Hub, Bell Renewables and Bell Batteries pages. I replied that they can reach the administrators here and linked the notability policy. In their answer, they wrote the following: “If we cannot achieve a satisfactory outcome in this matter, we intend on formally writing to Sundar Pichai CEO of Google LLC (Your major sponsor) expressing our concerns with the transparence and the manner in which the organization is run.
I guess their account is Bellresources (talkcontribslogs), which was blocked by @Mahir256. Feel free to take away the ticket from me, I think someone with better English would handle this case better. Bencemac (talk) 14:10, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
@Addshore, Bencemac: None of the items that the mail stated were deleted have actually been deleted (check the account's contributions). The problem is that two unrelated families went to share the same Commons category; likely due to negligence of Commoners, but it’s another problem. Can anybody separate the entities but with duplicating Commons category (P373) (for the time being)? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 16:18, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing that out, I hadn't gone to check the test on ruwiki yet, but it does look like the merge should be undone. ruwiki states "Marina is a Russian noble family." and itwiki states "The Marin are a noble Venetian family , of Spanish origin" ·addshore· talk to me! 16:37, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
I have undone the merge, and also added some English descriptions to highlight the difference between the two items. I also updated the german descriptions to include the difference. Also @Pasleim: as I undid you merge.
It looks like there is still an issue of these items sharing a commons category, which now only shows on one item, although both items can have the statement for commons category. There isn't really a fix for this...
@Incnis_Mrsi: all done! ·addshore· talk to me! 16:42, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
I merged the two items not only because both families have the same name but they also have the same coat of arms. Either the article on ruwiki (ru:Марины) or itwiki (it:Marin (famiglia)) is intermingling both families. --Pasleim (talk) 16:07, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
The Italian article doesn’t mention Russia at all. But an IP editor added a Russian coat of arms and the rest of editors don’t care – a common scenario even in English Wikipedia let alone weaker ones. It is good for a Wikidata sysop to replicate negligent mistakes by it.Wikipedians? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 17:59, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Another example how it.Wikipedia admits thoughtlessly cloned articles. For one person with some bit of knowledge popular sites have seven button-pushers with mechanical tools. Most Wikipedians don’t check anything. We don’t live in some old time like 2010 when at least some wikipedias—such as English—could be trusted to some extent. Use your brains, buddies, and don’t crap out miserably because of Wikipedian feed. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 18:15, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Hello, I created a page "Kim marcelle" which has been deleted, I would like a restoration of, it is possible? Thank you for helping me.  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Paulollivier0 (talk • contribs) at 16:28, 25 December 2018‎ (UTC).

You talk about Q57084536, which was nominated for deletion this morning besides some other related items. There are plenty of statements in this item, but it seems to be completely based on original research and social network profiles which are under control of the entity itself. Can you show how the item about Marcelle could fulfill the notability policy, or more specifically how it could be referenced based on independent third-party sources? —MisterSynergy (talk) 17:40, 25 December 2018 (UTC)
Hello, thank you for your answer, yes of course marcelle must have important links, or pages that are not managed by itself. I just have to search for them on google. So when I have links I can ask for the restoration of his page wikidata? thank you —Paulollivier0

Protection and mediation for Q32641

There is an edit war in the item Valencian since June. The last edit done by Micru is quite vandalic, deleting 5 sources and adding an erroneous propriety. Can someone protect the item and mediate the conflict, please? --Foguera (talk) 17:19, 27 December 2018 (UTC)

@FogueraC: You have changed a statement that was properly sourced, that is why I have reverted you as explained in the edit summary. It has been explained to you in the past by other uninvolved editors that in Wikidata several different statements can coexist, yet you persist in pushing your POV. I do not disagree that you add more statements if you feel it is necessary to represent other perspectives, however please do not change properly sourced information (the statement you wanted to change is supported by the dictionary of the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua (Q1468503) which is the official regulatory body of Valencian (Q32641)). You claim that my edit is vandalic, yet from my perspective it looks as if you disagree with the source itself.--Micru (talk) 17:35, 27 December 2018 (UTC)
A geographic variety of a language is a dialect. Valencian is not a sociolect, is not an idiolect, is not a register, is not any other type of variety. So Diccionari normatiu valencià (Q15810630) is a valid source to the statement that Valencian is geographic variety of Catalan, i.e., a dialect of Catalan.
Apart from this, your edit has deleted four more sources and added an erroneous propriety. And in the past, you have changed the descriptions of different languages ignoring all these sources and you have added a incorrect statement ("Valencian is a language") with two bad sources (a refused ISO proposal and a news about a survey).
It is quite clear that this edit war won't stop until an admin protects the item and mediate the changes according to relevant sources. --Foguera (talk) 17:46, 27 December 2018 (UTC)
According to Q16492945, which is the legal framework for the Valencian Community where Q32641 is spoken, the legal status of Q32641 is "own language" (llengua pròpia). This is a legal term which refers to languages that have been declared official of an autonomous community together with Castilian/Spanish. Both the "Request for Change to ISO 639-3 Language Code" and the 2014 news article reporting that 52.3% of Q32641 speakers consider that "Catalan and Valencian are different languages", are there to reflect that there is a significant part of the speakers that do not feel comfortable with the association of the system that they use to communicate with each other with the label "Catalan" (for reasons that perhaps would be too long to explain here).
According to the dictionary of the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua (Q1468503) which is the official regulatory body of Valencian (Q32641)), Q32641 is defined as a "variety" (enwiki says about this that: "The use of the word "variety" to refer to the different forms avoids the use of the term language, which many people associate only with the standard language, and the term dialect, which is often associated with non-standard varieties thought of as less prestigious or "correct" than the standard."). This is the statement that you have changed, and I have reverted your edits here.
If according to other sources you want to add yet another statement (for example, "instance of:dialect"), you are free to do so.
I find this item interesting because it shows how a topic can be approached from different perspectives (political, linguistical, social, cultural...), and how each actor chooses a different label/concept according to their own ontology, their perceived reality, or simply how they would like things to be. These conflicts for cultural hegemony are beneficial to the elites, and to people who share their worldview, and here we are left to pick up the pieces trying to be as neutral as possible. I find unfortunate that concepts associate with power structures, yet it seems that it is the way it works.--Micru (talk) 01:36, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

Harvest Templates

Is there any process for users who never reply to their talk page messages? Edoardo88 has decided to incorrectly add lots of data to the wrong items with Harvest Templates again, and I can't do anything except revert all of the relevant edits (also again), which will take a substantial amount of time. Jc86035 (talk) 12:10, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

We are talking about behaviour norms on this page. "Answer to questions someone else asks you" is a behavior we would like to encourage/promote on Wikidata, however it is not very clear what should happen if users act against the community spirit by ignoring questions. If you have any idea or suggestion about what we could do, I would like to invite you to participate in the conversation and share it.--Micru (talk) 12:37, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
@Micru: I think any action would have to be indirect, such as introducing consequences/remedies like topic bans for the specific problems being complained about (e.g. "User X is indefinitely prohibited from editing items and properties related to recorded music, broadly construed" or "User X is indefinitely prohibited from importing data from Wikipedia").
Usually I find Wikidata policy doesn't have enough substance to it, and users are allowed to get away with various antisocial behaviour that would probably get them blocked much more quickly (based on actual written policy) on other wikis. For example, if w:en:Wikipedia:Dispute resolution existed, perhaps Edoardo would be incentivized to reply on his talk page to avoid being blocked for ignoring attempts at dispute resolution. We also lack analogues to fundamental policies like w:en:Wikipedia:Verifiability and w:en:Wikipedia:Article titles (i.e. labels and descriptions), to name a few.
I've seen a few English Wikipedia users deride Wikidata users outright for acting incompetent or generally disconnected from the Wikimedia movement:
[...] in my experience he [RexxS]'s the only one of the Wikidata people I'd trust to count to 21 without unzipping his fly.
—Iridescent
I don't really like that perception, because I'd like to think there are a few more people here who aren't completely insane. Our current policies implicitly encourage problematic behaviour and unwritten rules and conventions. Jc86035 (talk) 14:43, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
Each project lives in a different ecosystem based on the nature of their tasks and the kind of contributors that it attracts, so what applies to one project does not necessarily apply to others. Policies arise from the need to clarify what is acceptable and to avoid conflict. We have less policies because so far we had less conflicts here. If the amount of conflict would increase, I am sure there would be an increase of policies or guidelines.
I agree that it is a problem that other users ignore questions to them, but we need a process to escalate the issue. Please do comment on the talk page that I have linked before about how to do this.--Micru (talk) 16:28, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
@Micru: For some reason I didn't realize that that was a link, sorry. Jc86035 (talk) 16:34, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
@Jc86035: No worries, looking forward to your feedback!--Micru (talk) 16:37, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
  • @Jc86035: I wouldn't really expect you to answer if I asked you to add u-tube links to items ;)
Some semi-automated operations occasionally go wrong and all operators are generally thankful if they are stopped before messing up too many items. Especially for bot operations, these generally run unattended. So yes, bots should temporarily be blocked until the situation is clarified. Occasionally batches can include a couple of problem edits, but that's another issue. --- Jura 16:00, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
@Jura1: I'm not referring to the YouTube discussions. The two "discussions" (no replies) initiated by me were for the same problem, but for three separate Harvest Templates batches, of which the earlier two were eight weeks ago. There are also several other discussions related to the user's Harvest Template imports in different fields, also with no replies.
Regarding YouTube links, for most cases the item is about a song and the link is to the song's music video, which should be a separate entity (or at least I think it should be) with separate credits and separate identifiers. See also this RfC I drafted earlier this month. Jc86035 (talk) 16:09, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
    • I left a note on their user page about this discussion. Personally, I'm not entirely sure what you expect at Topic:Unvvf4bia5otb4f0. The item you mentioned should be skipped (what they seem to have done) or harvest template not used on any single/song/etc. item? --- Jura 18:50, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
@Jura1: The data is already in Wikidata, but in another item. This happens especially often for singles – usually they've been treated as the same entity as the first song; but it's technically more precise to say that the single has one or two tracks, each of which is an audio recording of a song. The songs (compositions) are connected to the Wikipedia articles, which cover all of these entities. Jc86035 (talk) 19:07, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
I didn't realize you linked to the older topic so maybe the explanation was unnecessary. Anyway, what I didn't expect was that he would do it again after I asked him specifically not to do it. For the November batches he actually kept going after I had already reverted several of his edits and he reimported the same data which I had just removed an hour before, so I'm not really that willing to assume good faith. Jc86035 (talk) 19:09, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
      • I think he regularly runs a bunch of bookmarks for harvest templates. Maybe any song or album related one need to be revised or deleted. --- Jura 19:20, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Issue is largely resolved; I've gone through both of the relevant Harvest Templates batches. 60% of the items (i.e. those not previously edited by myself or Moebeus) were okay so I've restored Edoardo88's revision for those items. Convert tool talk page to structured discussions

Can someone convert Wikidata talk:Wikidata Lexeme Forms to Structured Discussions (formerly known as Flow)? I think that would make a lot of sense for that page, where most of the discussions stand on their own (usually about a particular language or template), and in addition there aren’t a lot of open topics there right now (I’ll create new Structured Discussions topics for the subsections that aren’t resolved yet). --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 17:41, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

Wikidata talk:Wikidata Lexeme Forms is not a project discussion page, though. It’s a discussion page for this specific tool (written by me, which I forgot to mention above – the page was only recently moved to the Wikidata namespace), and I encourage its users to move any discussions of more general significance (e. g. how should words for language X be modeled) to a more appropriate place, such as Wikidata talk:Lexicographical data. --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 14:32, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
The page is currently in project talk namespace and serves as a discussion page for a project page, not a user page. As such, we should avoid making it unsearchable. It's not really possible to recover discussions once they are put in flow. Is there a good reason why you don't want the page to be indexed for search? --- Jura 16:27, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
@Jura1: Is there a good reason why you don't want the page to be indexed for search? I’m sorry, what kind of question is that? Obviously I don’t want the page to be excluded from search – I want the Foundation to fix T62493 and related issues, as they promised they would do for a while now (I seem to recall it being on their roadmap for the past fiscal year, but clearly that didn’t happen). But in the meantime, I think that the benefits which Structured Discussions bring – especially the ability to only follow individual topics, as well as to close them as resolved – are worth the temporary loss of search functionality. --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 10:46, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
In the meantime, the page wont searchable. It seems to be something you know about. You can still close each topic. --- Jura 09:22, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

✓ Done as creator and maintainer of the tool Lucas can decide on the format how user discuss it. --Pasleim (talk) 19:53, 27 December 2018 (UTC)

  • Do we have a policy basis for this or did you just make this up? --- Jura 09:22, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
It is the absence of a policy. We do not have a policy that forces programmers of external tools to maintain their tool or to document it or to interact with user inputs. In this sense, a tool programmer is completely free on deciding how pages around their tool are arranged and structured. --Pasleim (talk) 10:25, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
    • The programmer is obviously free to do this in their user space, but if it's part of project namespace, the programmer doesn't get to "own" it. We don't need to spread incomplete features further into the project. --- Jura 16:40, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
    • Looks like userification doesn't work. Can someone restore the original talk page? --- Jura 16:48, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
@Jura1: What the fuck? Apparently you just tried to move the page back into the user namespace (my space!), with no discussion to that effect (let alone any form of consensus), and Pasleim had to clean up the mess you left behind. This is, in my opinion, completely unacceptable – please don’t ever do this again. --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 18:50, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
  • Apparently users want this to be searchable (or assume it's searchable - which it isn't) and it still got converted. It was suggested that you are the owner of this. Accordingly I tried to move it back to your user spacde. It's still not clear why you insist on making parts of the project talk namespace un-searchable. You do know about the bot that archives sections you mark as resolved? --- Jura 19:02, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
  • @Jura1: it's still not clear why you insist on being antisocial on so many occasions. What are you trying to achieve? You should really step back, wind down and adopt a more constructive stance. I am sure your own experience of the project would be greatly improved. I would be happy to talk this through over a phone/video call for instance if that helps (text-based communication does not seem to work very well so far). − Pintoch (talk) 18:14, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
  • I find your comment thoroughly unacceptable. Good idea with the video though. Maybe you want to do one for u-tube that explains why it's better to have talk pages in flow format and how people are expected to search for discussion in the them. You could also add an explanation about why it's better not to conclude the discussion before implementing changes. --- Jura 08:55, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
  • @Jura1: What makes Pintoch's comment "thoroughly unacceptable"? He seems to have a genuine interest in understanding your motivations, and has suggested a dialogue, which normally is a good thing.
Regarding "Structured Discussions", afaik there was never a guideline on which procedure to follow to activate it on pages, perhaps it is a good time to open a thread about it on the project chat and update Wikidata:Structured Discussions accordingly? Even without the search functionality, in certain pages SD brings some advantages over wikitext conversations. If SD is used, then there will be more interest to fix the bugs.--Micru (talk) 22:16, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
  • @Jura1: Which video are you talking about? And who is "they"? I don't know which point are you trying to make by linking the VIN proposal, could you please elaborate?--Micru (talk) 11:19, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
