Report concerning User:Allknowingroger

Multiple issues relating to insufficient checks before automated edits. Please see this edit group and this section on their talk page. They are currently halfway a batch that adds main subject (P921) = elephant (Q7378) to (it seems) everything with the word "elephant" in it. Q1497463 edit war

Sir Morosus insists on the English description (1888-1976) opera singer, voice teacher for Adelina Adler (Q1497463). As I have repeatedly told them, this doesn’t correspond to Help:Description or current practice. I am well aware that both guidelines and current practice aren’t hard rules but I feel that users should generally be able to provide very good reasons when they wish to deviate from them. A reason has been given on Topic:Wa1ci2w7tu8fzbz9 but it’s hardly compelling but rather personal preference.

I have proposed various alternatives to “Hungarian opera singer and voice teacher“ such as to avoid the word “Hungarian“ and to include the life dates (although date of birth (P569) and date of death (P570) should be used for that). I have also urged the user to discuss their opinions somewhere appropriate such as Wikidata:Project_chat or Help talk:Description before reverting again. However, the user won’t respond to my remarks any more and just continues to revert. Discussion has taken place here:

Short ban of OppsMetal request

@OppsMetal: this user has been doing a ton of quickstatements work. Several people now have messaged them on their talkpage about errors in their work (e.g. introducing lots of constraint violations) but have gotten no reply and the user just continues to run new jobs. The user is newish, most of their work is good and I'm guessing there's a language barrier here but repeatedly not replying or correcting their errors is not ok (read their talk page). This user's last activity dates back from the 11th of April 2021 and, at that time, they had been messing with a video game, a movie, a film production company and a Youtuber for a week or so, mading up or mixing aliases, labels and descriptions, no matter what the sources could tell.

I dont know if you can take any action against them since they're not active for the moment but I think I should draw to your attention their blocks on EN.WP for disruptive editing (during 4 months starting 7 May 2021) and on FR.WP for fake information addition and articles desorganization (during 1 month starting today).

Could you at least keep an eye on them please ? I've already reverted every edit from them and gifted them a warning template so the rest is up to you. :-)

There's a slow-moving edit war going on across several articles over the cumulative elevation gain (P7297) claims. Various IPv6 users are removing them, and several accounts (@Vandcykel, GAN) are restoring them, not always with the same value, and never sourced. A request for sourcing went unanswered. I'm no expert in this subject matter, but I was unable to find any source for these claims. I'm reluctant to protect all of these articles because there are so many and because other productive editing is also taking place. I cannot readily block the IPv6 users, and I don't think it's appropriate to block the other accounts at this time. Can someone who knows something about this please weigh in? - For stages 8 to 21, the data was deleted by @Anthony34570, so you can ask him too.
- But I believe that the reason for the deletion is "so that this data is not displayed in the article when outputting through the module", and not because "it may be incorrect or erroneous." Because in that case they would be changed to the correct ones.

Bovlb, The editions of this IP and mine are not at all similar. Mine have tags and relate to valid values on statements. The changes to the IP mainly concern vandalized headers. Thank you for speaking with "good faith editor", which is my case. On the other hand, I am insulted to be compared to a vandal. The bug was found, but nothing was done. Someone else only reported my problem today. The 2 IPs mentioned are vandals raging only on WD : just look better at the history.

The 2 IPs do not occupy the same subnets. The CIDR occupied by the IP you quote also includes 2 vandalism-free IPs (old modifications). Since Eihel wasn't able to tell us, I did some poking around. I believe they are referring to this tool and this bug report (or possibly this one). How widespread is the use of this tool? Is the bug hitting everyone who uses it? If so, perhaps we need to consider the bug reporter's suggestion to get it out of production. @Bovlb:, I have also had similar issues with the tool while adding some labels. I think the issue is while we add/change/remove label using the tool and change/remove it again in the same browser window. So the edits works in a loop till the user closes the window. And I believe it's me who reported the issue @ bitbucket last year while I have seen a users contribution while going through the contributions during an label-a-thon. Thanks for the input. I think it's clear that the Tabernacle bug is likely unrelated to the behaviour of the IP users. Regarding the Tabernacle bug, there's not much we can do to fix the bug or restrict the functionality without co-operation from the tool's maintainer. From the admin perspective, the only option we have is to block the tool entirely, which is a sledgehammer solution, given its apparent usefulness. Going back to the IP user, is is hard to believe that people are choosing to sit for hours, reverting themselves over and over again, which means a software bug is still a possibility. I was just able to create Continuum Arm Robotic Manipulator: A Review (Q107261919) without issue; however one of my students, User:Lavalec, a new user, was prevented from doing so by an edit filter that said:

@Pigsonthewing: I hope this answer isn't too late to be useful. They hit Special:AbuseFilter/132 because of a word that is fairly common in the titles of academic articles. They should have stopped hitting the filter once they had a few edits under their belt. I reviewed six recent cases where another editor was caught by the same filter. One was exactly what this filter was intended to combat, two were not but were no great loss either, and three were academic papers that it ought to have been possible to create. He also deleted the Kurdish abbreviation "ku" in previous changes. He is most likely a Turkish nationalist and deletes Kurds and Kurdish-related changes on the pages. Most of these look ok to me, but I've reverted one that didn't make sense. Is there a good way to quickly patrol these? Hi there! I see these repeated edits of User:Mitte27 as strange example of disruptive behaviour, or maybe "Doxing". I am editing under my real name, still I dont think adding somebody`s name with error can be adequate answer to the dispute in another Wikimedia project. Thanks.   • Sorry if I dare to interfere in some sort of 'exchange of niceties', but "Николай Иванович Сварник" is the correct translation of "Микола Іванович Сварник" from Ukrainian into Russian. I thought it doesn't matter how an individual's name sounds in language that's foreign for individual, it's not constructive to remove a label because you don't like it or how it looks. Looks more odd that the Cyrillic 'в' romanized into English as 'w', just a choice of the person or compliance with the rules I/we might not know? --Wolverène (talk) 13:23, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

Could we please add 'Barney' to the potential abuse filter (Abuse Filter 132)? A set of IP users are, for whatever inscrutable reason, creating multiple superfluous items for Barney-related stuff (the t-rex, not Barney Frank). We have all the Barney we need, thanks. Ari T. Given the fact that the removed statements seem correct and it will be probably be necessary for other users to readd them in the future (also the example of the removal of the edit by Emu is highly significant for this), I am against the removal of these edits and I would support restoring them. However, I would like to hear the opinions of other admins about which is the usual way of dealing with such situations. --Epìdosis 12:55, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
Some background:
  • The user in question has a wiki career that dates back more than 15 years, starting 2003 in English Wikipedia under the username en:User:Tobias Conradi and in German Wikipedia under the username de:User:Tobias Conradi~dewiki (no SUL back then). The accounts were blocked there in 2007/2009 and subsequently abandoned, and some follow-up accounts with similar usernames were made. Of course, the account did not make it to Wikidata, which did not exist back then.
  • As much as I am aware, there were pretty continuous contributions to Wikimedia projects over the years, and they frequently ran into trouble with all of their accounts. The first big issue on Wikidata was probably User:Tamawashi in 2014. In 2015, the person received a "community global ban" following meta:Requests for comment/Global ban for Tobias Conradi.
  • Due to their pretty unique editing style and field of interest, it is relatively easy to identify new socks without having additional rights. Blocked accounts are usually abandoned, and new ones created. Use of checkuser tools or global blocks are probably not really necessary.
  • The person has access to a wide range of IP addresses from a large German provider that usually geolocate in Berlin. If we were to block these ranges long-term, probably 1/3 of Berlin would not be able to edit Wikidata any longer. As much as I am aware, neither WMF nor the stewards are willing or able to do anything here in order to keep them away from editing Wikimedia projects.
  • Technically, the person behind these accounts is quite competent and their edits are not a complete mess.
  • However, they are remarkably unable to work in a collaborative environment as ours as they seem completely unable to get along with decisions and policies they do not like by themselves. There is meanwhile a countless army of Wikimedia contributors who are seriously pissed about the permanent damage against explicit project consensus in plenty of situations, or the extra work which is necessary to tidy up what was done against project consensus.
The big question is: what to do in this situation? Technically it is pretty impossible to keep them away from Wikidata/Wikimedia project, and they have proven to be a motivated long-term editor that will probably be around here for a long time to come.
One option is indeed to invalidate all of their contributions. Since they are editing predominantly manually, they need to invest quite a lot of time which we can undo pretty easily with tools. In my opinion, this is the only real option we have here: make them ineffective and waste more time than we do—even if parts of their contributions are fine. They simply need to understand that their presence in Wikimedia projects is plain undesired, at minimum since the global community ban of 2015. —MisterSynergy (talk) 13:28, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
Reverting on a mass scale isn’t what I would have done by myself – however, I agree that this might be the only real solution for the Wikidata community. So I guess I’m not against it. (BTW: reverting one or more of my contributions seems like an honest mistake, no hard feelings)
In more general terms, I wonder if the WMF shouldn’t consider legal action. I’m not a German lawyer, but I’m pretty sure there is a legal remedy on the books to prevent people from using computer systems they are not allowed to use, be it by means of civil law or even criminal law. Legal action against users is certainly not ideal from a publicity point of view, but the current situation isn’t exactly joyful either. --Emu (talk) 15:02, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
