General guidelines

[edit]

Forming new words

[edit]

In the Dagbani language, it’s common to form new words by combining existing ones. For example, the adjective-noun compounds in Dagbani are the results of lexicalisation of attributive constructions comprising of a noun followed by an adjective.[1]

So, for example, a term for “electrical current” by combining the words “niɣilim” (wriggle), “buɣim” (fire), and “saa” (water) is a valid way to introduce new concepts into the language. These changes need to happen organically over time and are accepted when they are widely used and understood within the community of speakers.

Senses

[edit]

For Lexemes to be relevant for Abstract Wikipedia they need translation statements or item for this sense (P5137) statements, both of which go on Senses

The property usage example (P5831) should be situated within each sense, rather than presented as a general statement at the Lemma level. Placing it under each sense is essential because every sense represents a distinct meaning. Positioning it at the Lemma level can result in ambiguity regarding the specific sense for which the 'usage example' is intended. This placement must be accompanied by the appropriate qualifiers, specifically subject form (P5830) and subject sense (P6072). For reference, please see Lexeme:L651798.

Glosses

[edit]

Glosses should avoid single-word translations because words often have multiple meanings, leading to potential ambiguity in a simple translation.
