Red List of South African Plants conservation status
[edit]Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Natural science
Motivation
[edit]South Africa is a megadiverse country and has fully assessed the status of its entire flora. 20 456 indigenous plant taxa were assessed and each given a conservation status. 13 265 of the assessed flora are endemic to South Africa. The majority are not in the IUCN Red List. Please see: Red List of South African Plants. Maqdisi (talk) 03:17, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Comment It would be good to point to similar existing conservation status properties and how we have handled them. ArthurPSmith (talk) 20:28, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- Support, I think it could be useful. But let's involve also the people from the Biodiversity project. Notified participants of WikiProject Biodiversity --Luca.favorido (talk) 07:11, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
- Support do we need one property for every country on earth or is it a better approach? - Salgo60 (talk) 07:26, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
- Support. (I also like ArthurPSmith's idea). Tommy Kronkvist (talk • contribs • logs)
- Support I agree that this property is necessary. Similar to New Zealand, South Africa has undertaken threat classifications for its flora, most of which are not covered in the IUCN Red List. I think it is important to ensure that if species are assessed as being at risk, Wikidata should link to this information. However I also like ArthurPSmith's suggestion of pointing to similar existing conservation status properties and how Wikidata handles them.
- Support In reference to every country bio regions may make more sense to avoid regional differences in nomenclature. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 22:54, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
- Comment It is definitely an useful property, thank you for the proposal. I do not oppose it, but I wonder if a single "conservation status" property with proper sources wouldn't make the model more flexible? Hopefully we will have conservation data from a myriad of sources. TiagoLubiana (talk) 13:46, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
- Support It looks useful. There are a lot of taxa not covered in the IUCN Red List. --190.17.84.174 15:36, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Maqdisi, ArthurPSmith, Luca.favorido, Salgo60, Tommy Kronkvist, Faendalimas: @TiagoLubiana, 190.17.84.174: Done as Red List of South African Plants conservation status (P12105), but please create corresponding new items for the examples given here, as the property will be incomplete without them.
