Project background

[edit]

In September and October of 2024, we are piloting a new format that combines our previous calls and working hours. In this first series, we will have four sessions over the course of two months dedicated to Christa Strickler's joint project with the Wikidata Religion & Theology Community of Practice to contribute biographical data to Wikidata from the IRFA database using the Mix’n’Match tool.

Series sessions

[edit]

Session 1 (September 3) - Intro to community of practice and the project

[edit]

Discussion Questions:

  • Do you see a need for a Wikidata group focused on religion? If so, what would you find valuable?
  • What ideas do you have to make a group sustainable?
  • What are your thoughts on aligning Wikidata projects with your institution's strategic priorities?
  • What questions/comments do you have?

Q&A from the Etherpad notes

  • Is trickiness in geographic data based on national border changes?
    • Yes, and relevant to this project, the boundaries of Catholic dioceses can also change over time
  • I’d be interested in knowing to what extent journals mentioned in Atla’s database are represented in Wikidata, and what interest there might be in expanding that information if warranted
    • Not aware of any analysis; some journals have been added, but don't think many items for articles
      • Update after the meeting: a brief test using OpenRefine to reconcile an Atla database title list with Wikidata shows that there appear to be gaps in journal title coverage.
    • There is a WikiProject Periodicals: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Periodicals
  • Do we know more about the status of the IRFA database itself?  How it's been used by researchers? Are they (IRFA) still adding entries, updating records?
    • Not sure to what extent still being updated; partially chosen because data had lots of connections when added using the Mix'nMatch tool

Session 2 (September 17) - Working session using Mix‘n’Match to add Wikidata items

Q&A from the Etherpad notes

  • Do you add “different from” statements or any contextual information to differentiate non-matches?
    • Good suggestion. We will be covering editing Wikidata items in the next session, so you could make a note and add it then or if you are familiar with editing Wikidata items, add it now.
  • OAuth can be buggy-you many need to try logging out and logging in again if you are getting any errors
  • Mix'n'match tip: one thing I like to do when using mix'n'match, is, when someone doesn't match, to add that person's birth or birth and death dates to their wikidata description. it makes future matching much easier! but (similar to adding a different from statement) this would be an additional option of something to do within Wikidata itself, rather than the core "confirm" / "remove" work we're all doing together in Mix'n'Match <3
  • What if there is not enough information in the Wikidata entry?
    • Choose remove and it will then go into another step of Mix'n'Match where it is manually reviewed
  • How are catalogs added to Mix'n'Match tool?
  • If there’s a match under “Results from other catalogs”, do you know how to do that? Click “Set Q” down there?
    • If you create a new item using the "Enter Q number of matching item" Match mode automatically adds qualifiers from IRFA database
    • If you use "Set Q," under "Results from other catalogs," it creates another item based on data from the other catalog
    • Data from IRFA database only gets brought over to Wikidata if matched and not if you create a new item
  • Idea to create items via the more completely prepared catalog

Session 3 (October 1) - Working session using a data model and the UseAsRef user script to enhance items

[edit]

Session Dashboard

Q&A from the Etherpad notes

  • Why is Catholic Church used with religion or worldview instead of Catholicism
    • Christa looked at WikiProject Relgion and Catholic Church seemed the best option because it referred to the Roman Catholic Church
    • Religion in Wikidata needs to be developed more as mentioned in chat that Catholicism seems more like the system of belief and Catholic Church would refer to the institution
  • Are images available to be imported into Wikimedia Commons? If they have compatible licenses could be imported using OpenRefine
    • Not sure--would need to be in public domain to be added to Wikimedia Commons
  • Would Wikipedia pages be created for when Mix'n'match Wikidata item created
    • If a concept has a Wikipedia page in any language, I think it should by default/bot have a Wikidata item? So we were creating items that had no Wikidata items, so there would be no Wikipedia articles

Session 4 (October 15) - Working session to demonstrate an image search for item enhancement and celebrate with data visualizations

Q&A from the Etherpad notes

  • Apart from taking screenshots of before and after, do you have any other recommendations for tracking progress over time?
  • On the image tool what is the crop notice option?
    • We don't know
  • Are all people in the IRFA catalog also members of Paris Foreign Missions Society (Q482622)?
    • Yes, that is the case
  • Would there be a way to add the Paris Foreign Missions Society to everyone with an IRFA ID as a batch change?
    • Yes! Very doable.
  • Does "Diocèse d'incardination" from the IRFA site mean the same thing as diocese where the person's ordination occured? Or is incardination different than ordination?

How to Add Yourself to the Participants Section

[edit]

First: make sure that you are LOGGED IN!

Then, simply typing four tildes (~), like this: ~~~~ below the numbered list, will automatically generate your signature and time stamp (if you would like to have your username appear after a bullet point, you can type * using the asterisk key before adding the tildes).

Alternatively, once you are in Edit mode, you can click on the four tildes below as seen in this image:
