Te Papa collection management system mapping
[edit]The following information is in draft. Not all mappings have been confirmed.
As part of this project, Te Papa has mapped part of the Research Expeditions schema to fields in its collection management system EMu, allowing the import of expedition data.
Each expedition is represented in EMu as a Party record and a Narrative record. These are pulled through to Te Papa's collections API and Collections Online site as agents and topics.
The Party record can be linked to objects and specimens as a collector, as well as connecting associated people and organisations. The identifier given to the Party record can also be added to the expedition's Wikidata item using P3544 Te Papa agent ID.
The Narrative record incorporates a combination of structured and free text information about the expedition, as well as direct links to objects and specimens collected during that expedition.
Not all fields in the schema have been mapped because there isn't a suitable equivalent in EMu, or the available values don't match a fixed vocabulary used by the system. However this mapping does allow Te Papa to create records for the expeditions it's been involved with, while linking to Wikidata for the full range of structured data.
Notes:
- Associations added to Party records can have a 'role' value populated. However, this is not currently published to the API or Collections Online.

Narrative template mapping
[edit]The Narrative free text mapping put selected values into a template, using some conditional logic. It's broken into sections.
Introduction
[edit]If an English Wikipedia article exists, the article summary is pulled in. Otherwise, a sentence is built using the noted values.
![]() | This expedition visited (location OR country) between (start time) and (end time), focusing on (has goal AND field of work). |
Details
[edit]Where they're available, the values that go in the 'Narrative' field are formatted in a simple structured way.
![]() | Country of origin: (country of origin value) |

[edit]Sources attached to the item with P973 described at url and P1343 described by source are looked up to get their authors, titles and urls, and turned into a simple list.
