Wikidata talk:WikiProject Electronic Components

Hey @Manta_Ray_DeeJay: thanks for your work here! I know some folks active in the scene of electronic open source hardware, trying to structure electronic components and find unambiguous identifier for them. That seems to overlap with your efforts.

Introduction first: Hi, I'm moedn. Most of my work aims to contribute to the infrastructure of open source hardware (OSH) – that's how I came along this wikidata page. I initiated and led the creation of the first official open source hardware standard (which itself is open source); find a brief summary in an old talk [here](https://media.ccc.de/v/36c3-oio-192-open-source-hardware-in-industry-meet-din-spec-3105). Now I'm involved in a project that will create a wikibase instance for OSH modules in order to a) facilitate design reuse of production-ready OSH and b) enable cross-linking of hardware-related knowledge; find the details [here](https://github.com/open-next/oshi). There are quite a few OSH repositories and wikis spread across the web. This open knowledge base is meant to connect them.

I feel that this is matches with the principles of the wikimedia community. I also found the wikidata ontology very useful to build on and now I feel, we could even fully rely on it if we could add 8…12 properties. However, I'm not quite sure if including OSH in wikidata and hence linking knowledge to the production world is aligned with the plans/identity/goals of the community. So I'm reaching out :)

Long story short: Does any of the above stated efforts resonate with you? If so, we could join forces and hopefully make this a project inside wikidata/wikimedia. I'm willing (and able) to invest ~10h/week into this over the next 2 years. Structuring electronic hardware (as you did here) would be a part of it.

Science[edit]

Hi Jadeble (talk) 20:01, 3 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

OSHI/LOSH (Q101189831) has been stated as being "part of" (P361) GOSH, "Global Open Science Hardware" (Q62391989)[edit]

Hi @Moedn, it looks like @Manta_Ray_DeeJay hasn't been active on this project since January 2017, based on the project history. I don't know if they have responded to you directly yet, but if they haven't then I don't know if they will. I haven't been active on this project yet, but I'm likely to start within the next month, although I can't say for sure. I'd like to familiarize myself with the ontology a little bit more, and then try writing webscrapers to retrieve electronic component data automatically from places like Digikey and Mouser. Collaboration between this project and OSHI/LOSH is a very exciting idea!

In the meantime, I've created a Wikidata item labelled "Library of Open Source Hardware" (Q101189831) and listed LOSH's GitHub https://github.com/open-next/oshi as its "source code repository" (P1324). Hopefully this will lead Wikidata enthusiasts to your project. I also listed LOSH (Q101189831) as "part of" (P361) GOSH, "Global Open Science Hardware" (Q62391989). You can see for yourself with this query, which returns all items that are listed as "part of" (P361) GOSH. https://query.wikidata.org/#SELECT%20%3Fitem%20%3FitemLabel%20%3Fgosh%20%3FgoshLabel%0AWHERE%7B%0A%0A%20%20%3Fitem%20wdt%3AP361%20wd%3AQ62391989.%0A%20%20BIND%28wd%3AQ62391989%20as%20%3Fgosh%29%0A%0A%20%20%0A%0ASERVICE%20wikibase%3Alabel%20%7B%20bd%3AserviceParam%20wikibase%3Alanguage%20%22en%22.%20%7D%0A%7D

GOSH is loosely similar to LOSH, in that it seeks to create a connection between multiple open source hardware efforts. The key difference is that GOSH has a leaning towards hardware used for scientific purposes, rather than just being for hardware in general. It also is different in that is seeks to connect open source hardware initiatives, rather than focusing on the hardware itself. If you don't want LOSH to be listed as a part of GOSH for these reasons, or for any reason at all, then please remove the "part of" (P361) listing from LOSH (Q101189831), or ask me to do it. My reason for adding it was so that people searching for open source hardware efforts in GOSH would find LOSH, and with luck, they might have a way to contribute to your project.

P.S. Everything you've done for Open-Source around the world has been amazing, thank you! :) --AnAbyssButNotScary
