Earthquakes and causes?[edit]

How should we connect earthquakes with their cause? Some earthquakes are due to movements along faults. But others have more diffuse reasons: basin settling, basin dehydration, drilling, interactions within a subduction zone, and others. User:Emw has recently reviewed the properties that deal with causality. We could use this as a starting point: -Tobias1984 (talk) 15:37, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Why? Modeling causes on Wikidata[edit]

Talk about causes is ubiquitous in everyday life and many other domains of knowledge. Until recently, we've had a few properties to make statements about cause in certain narrow areas, but lacked a way to structure data about causes across a broad range of subjects. For example, you might want to know:

Wikidata now has some new properties that provide structure for basic answers to such questions.

This approach to modeling causation attempts to balance expressiveness with simplicity. It borrows from the idea of causation as a "chain of events", which also has background conditions or events that set the stage for some outcome. These properties are not perfect, but they do allow us to capture much richness in how various sources talk about causes -- and to do so in a way that humans can easily understand.

Help:Modeling causes explains these properties, their background, examples, things to avoid, issues and context. Please comment on the 'Help:Modeling causes' talk page, or here, with any feedback. Note that a simultaneous thread exists on the wikidata-l mailing list at https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikidata-l/2014-September/004631.html.

Hopefully we'll be able to build some cool stuff with this. Cheers, Emw (talk) 00:11, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If we for example say that the 1906 San Francisco earthquake (Q211386) was caused by movements along a fault (actually the stress/pressure release along a fault) then we would still need a qualifier to say which fault. Any ideas which qualifier we could use or what to name the new one? -Tobias1984 (talk) 15:37, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Launch of WikiProject Wikidata for research[edit]

Hi, this is to let you know that we've launched WikiProject Wikidata for research in order to stimulate a closer interaction between Wikidata and research, both on a technical and a community level. As a first activity, we are drafting a research proposal on the matter (cf. blog post). It would be great if you would see room for interaction! Thanks, --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 01:36, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania 2016[edit]

Is it possible add temporal range start (P523) and temporal range end (P524) in "Property overview"? PePeEfe (talk) 07:27, 22 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Adding data for 7.5 Minute Quadrangles[edit]

Please consider the following two items, for my question below.

Where, in the first wikidata item, would I add the latitude and longitude data found in the second item? I've added quite a few USGS pubs for these quadrangles thinking there was a way to define the physical area covered by the maps. I guess this is something I should have understood before pulling the data into Wikidata.

Data from National Geologic Map Database[edit]

Any way we could pull National Geologic Map Database data for lithographic data? That's quite an integrated set of data. -Trilotat (talk) 15:46, 24 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What are the best modelled items for your areas of interest?[edit]

Hi all

Over the past few months myself and others have been thinking about the best way to help people model subjects consistently on Wikidata and provide new contributors with a simple way to understand how to model content on different subjects. Our first solution is to provide some best practice examples of items for different subjects which we are calling Model items. E.g the item for William Shakespeare (Q692) is a good example to follow for creating items about playwright (Q214917). These model items are linked to from the item for the subject to make them easier to find and we have tried to make simple to understand instructions.

We would like subject matter experts to contribute their best examples of well modelled items. We are asking all the Wikiprojects to share with us the kinds of subjects you most commonly add information about and the best examples you have of this kind of item. We would like to have at least 5 model items for each subject to show the diversity of the subject e.g just having William Shakespeare (Q692) as a model item for playwright (Q214917), while helpful may not provide a good example for people trying to model modern poets from Asia.

You can add model items yourself by using the instructions at Wikidata:Model items. It may be helpful to have a discussion here to collate information first.

Thanks

Period set[edit]

Can someone, maybe @Tobias1984:, add to the project page the appropriate way to include geologic timescale info, e.g. Triassic, to lithostratigraphic layer items? Particularly how do we define qualifiers, e.g., upper, late, early, middle, lower, etc.? Thanks. Trilotat (talk) 17:10, 27 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Instance of Tongue?[edit]

User:Tobias1984 User:PePeEfe User:Trilotat User:Daniel Mietchen Tris T7 TT me User:99of9 User:Romaine Middle river exports (talk) 16:56, 24 June 2022 (UTC) User:Wallacegromit1 Your name ;) ...[reply]

Notified participants of WikiProject Geology, what should one use as instance of (P31) for a "tongue" unit, e.g. Coughs Creek Tongue (Q62085847)? Coughs Creek Tongue; a new tongue of the Eocene Green River Formation Piceance Creek basin, Colorado (Q60958114) notes it is a part of Green River Formation (Q741367), which I've noted here in WD. I'm struggling with a what to use for instance of and don't want to create something if not needed. Thanks for recommendations. Trilotat (talk) 15:16, 17 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

webscraping GEOLEX[edit]

Notified participants of WikiProject Geology Does anyone know how to webscrape the National Geologic Map Database, https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Geolex/search? I'm trying to pull the GEOLEX ID. I think there's an opportunity to build a mix-n-match database, but I'm trying to figure it out. Trilotat (talk) 01:12, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Seeking consensus regarding variations on unit names[edit]

In instances where multiple identities exist for a particular unit name, e.g. Arrowhead, as listed at https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Geolex/Units/Arrowhead_4597.html. Should we be creating items for each variation, e.g.

  • Arrowhead Member, as part of Yellowpine Limestone, as part of Monte Cristo Group
  • Arrowhead Member, as part of Monte Cristo Limestone
  • Arrowhead Limestone, as part of Monte Cristo Group

With this logic, I'd have to create a Monte Cristo Limestone and a Monte Cristo Group and then add:

  • Monte Cristo Group
    • has part Yellowpine Limestone
      • has part Arrowhead Member
    • has part Arrowhead Limestone
  • Monte Cristo Limestone
    • has part Arrowhead Member

how to add GSSPs[edit]

User:Tobias1984 User:PePeEfe User:Trilotat User:Daniel Mietchen Tris T7 TT me User:99of9 User:Romaine Middle river exports (talk) 16:56, 24 June 2022 (UTC) User:Wallacegromit1 Your name ;) ...[reply]

Notified participants of WikiProject Geology. I'm contemplating the best way to create items for specific Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (Q37402) (GSSPs), i.e. noting the lower boundary of the stage on the geologic time scale. I'd like to include specific locations, e.g. 75.1000°N 42.3200°W for the base of the Holocene Stage (see Formal definition and dating of the GSSP (Global Stratotype Section and Point) for the base of the Holocene using the Greenland NGRIP ice core, and selected auxiliary records (Q55871500)). As yet, there are only about 100 of these specific GSSPs. Comments? Trilotat (talk) 17:44, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Trilotat: Some GSSPs seem to already have items (e.g. GSSP for the base of the Piacenzian (Q1487074)). Creating items for the others seems appropriate. Connecting times with GSSPs might need a new property. I am not sure if someone once proposed something like "definition of base". The GSSP is also like a type locality for the time period. But type locality was not created for geology: Wikidata:Property_proposal/Archive/17 and was later created as type locality (biology) (P5304) (but might not allow use for geologic units). Tobias1984 (talk) 18:04, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I apparently forgot or never saw that this exists: type locality (geology) (P2695). Tobias1984 (talk) 18:08, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Do you think these items should be instance of (P31) = Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (Q37402)? There is a constraint violation with that choice, see GSSP for the base of the Piacenzian (Q1487074)). If you're willing to add more items, I'll venture to duplicate with the other GSSPs. Cheers. Trilotat (talk) 19:10, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Trilotat: I fixed the constraint warning by adding a subclass statement to Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (Q37402). I also created GSSP for Fortunian Stage (Q63565917). It is kind of difficult to describe the GSSP with the current set of properties. Expressing things like "first appearance of" might need a dedicated property. Tobias1984 (talk) 17:36, 7 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Trilotat: a full RDF implementation of the timescale, including the GSSPs, is available from https://github.com/CGI-IUGS/timescale-data - see discussion below https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_Geology#RDF_Geologic_Timescale_resource

A possible Science/STEM User Group[edit]

There's a discussion about a possible User Group for STEM over at Meta:Talk:STEM_Wiki_User_Group. The idea would be to help coordinate, collaborate and network cross-subject, cross-wiki and cross-language to share experience and resources that may be valuable to the relevant wikiprojects. Current discussion includes preferred scope and structure. T.Shafee(evo&evo) (talk) 02:35, 26 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Structure and texture[edit]

RDF Geologic Timescale resource[edit]

The International Union of Geological Sciences has a nice RDF representation of the International Commission on Stratigraphy's timeline. It's more detailed than what we have in Wikidata:

I've no experience in importing/reconciling data already formatted in RDF. Is this viable? T.Shafee(evo&evo) (talk) 00:52, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Some further info provided by a contact: "The content of https://github.com/CGI-IUGS/timescale-data/blob/master/rdf/isc2020.ttl is loaded at https://vocabs.ardc.edu.au/viewById/196. Note that the persistent identifiers for the terms are in the http://resource.geosciml.org domain. Then compare http://resource.geosciml.org/classifier/ics/ischart/Cambrian with Q79064." How to address former names/ranking of lithostratigraphic units?[edit]

If a Formation is later promoted/elevated to Group, do I need to create an item for the obsolete formation and replace it with the newer group? I'm creating a subject of an article, but that article's topic is no longer the current name.

What sayeth the community? Trilotat (talk) 01:19, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is something I want to know too, certain formations have an article in Wikipedia and an item in Wikidata, but are no longer in use. Romaine (talk) 04:43, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
