No. Because by merging we are saying that someone who's first name is Genoveva is actually Geneviève (or the other way around) and that is lying. Because the name is either Genoveva or Geneviève. @Vlout: Genoveva and Geneviève are equivalent but not identical. If you merge them, it would mean that Genoveva and Geneviève is the exact same thing which is obviously not true; for instance when someone is born they are called Genoveva or Geneviève but not both at the same time. Improve error message

Currently if two items cannot be merged, the error message says “Please report the above error here.” As it can be seen above, it results in a lot of error reports, while most of them are not really errors in the gadget, but attempts to merge items linking to each other. The error message should be rephrased at least to say “If you believe it’s an error, please report it here”, but the best would be to show the cause of the error, at least if it’s the interlinking (probably the API error message should be expanded for the latter). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 11:30, 27 December 2017 (UTC)

Merge gadget and Lexeme

I was wondering, could this gadget be updated to deal too with the lexeme (L-items)? (which should be deployed today, see Wikidata:Lexicographical data for more info). More precisely I see at least two things to update:

• be able to merge two lexemes
• display a specific error message when trying to merge a Q-item with an L-item

It now theoretically (untested) supports L items. I have tried and failed to merge those two elements, that both refer to South African Prime Ministers. There are 11 Wikipedia articles linked to the first element, and 11 to the second. list of Prime Ministers of South Africa (Q20680057)is a list of (P360)Prime Minister of South Africa (Q1511951), as the error message also says. The Wikidata items should not be merged, although the articles in the latter also mainly consist of the list. I think the only real solution is to split these articles into stubs about the position itself, and the lists. Trailing slash on website

When merging two items that had the same official website (P856), that value ended up duplicated on the destination page: [1] The only difference was a slash at the end of one of the links. Can the gadget be tweaked in order to ignore that trailing slash when it follows a root URL? —capmo (talk) 20:16, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

I'm not expert about taxon but I read that Stephanotis floribunda (Q1786657) ia a basionym (Q810198) of Marsdenia floribunda (Q10475339), see the property subject has role (P2868), so they are 2 different thing in taxonomy. --ValterVB (talk) 07:08, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

@ValterVB: I think that it is proper to regard the two things as identical since The Plant List treats Stephanotis floribunda Brongn. as one of the synonyms of an accepted name Marsdenia floribunda (Brongn.) Schltr. and Catalogue of Life, vice versa. Some of species seem treated differently depending on sites in view of which is accepted one. There are other such examples: Acacia seyal/Vachellia seyal (Acacia seyal (Q557431)), Cordia wagnerorum/Varronia wagnerorum (Varronia wagnerorum (Q17415232)), and so on. Indeed, and especially basionym items should be kept. Indeed taxon names often reflect opinions rather than being static identities. However, it is better to refer to scientific publications rather than onine databases. It is okay to gather site links at one item, but both items should be kept and of course point to each other (as they did). I agree. Also, even though the synonyms aren't considered "valid taxa" and have a subordinate taxonomical status in regards to currently accepted taxa, they still represent valid taxon names, and those taxon names should have their own, exclusive Wikidata items. We then use Wikidata properties such as taxon synonym (P1420) to link them together with their "valid" counterpart. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 12:16, 3 September 2018 (UTC).

• Looking at Q2877007 and Q1960343, there is a qualifier on the P31 statement of the second item linking to the first. You need to delete that statement first. I think in the past links in qualifiers didn't matter. --- Jura 10:54, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

Urashima Tarō

There are two pages : Q55617997, subtitled as for the legend, and Q1053441, subtitled as for its main character. However, not any language has separate articles for these two subjects, both being always treated in the same article. Even if, from a WD point of view two distinct pages may be justified, it makes no sense to have one part of the WP articles in one side and another part on the other side. All that it does is breaking the link between the articles. The problem is that Q55617997 indicates Q1053441 as one of its characters, and Q1053441 indicates itself as being present in the work Q55617997. I therefore cannot do the merging. Thanks for replying Mahir256. Is this so even if the articles all focus on the case, and the nominal difference therefore makes little to no sense? For instance, the Dutch article used to be named "Asia Bibi" from its start in December 2010 to March 2015, when I changed the title to "Zaak-Asia Bibi" (which can be translated with "Asia Bibi case"), after having concluded that its content was not about the person. No they are different type of wiki pages. You can't find en.wiki page in en:Special:DisambiguationPages but you can find it.wiki and de.wiki page in respective Special:DisambiguationPages. You can add everything in it.wiki page the only criterium is the spelling, not the meaning, but in en.wiki page you can talk only about surnames. They’re not the same. O'Gorman (Q21506860) is about a surname, while O'Gorman (Q357015) is a disambiguation page. Ok, I understand. But in O'Gorman (Q357015)... Russian article is only about surname and it says that this article is just about namesakes. Spanish and French articles (as far as i can understand with the help of a translator) contain only people with this surname too, though there are not any clarification that these articles is only about namesakes. And only German article have on the list one link to the article not about the person. What should be done, if these articles can't be merged? The Russian sitelink can be moved to Q21506860 if it’s really marked as listing only surnames (Google Translate doesn’t help me much in determining this), the others should be left as they currently are. (It’s useful to put Babel boxes on your user page to communicate the languages you speak to others; see mine for an example. When I try to merge Simone Sédan (Q61996269) and Simone Sédan (Q3484611), I got this error «  The statement has already a reference with hash 1a4143f5eb6ca2dd81b94518b4ffd991f00b2f13 » (this hash seems to be about references to Q55378313 in Simone Sédan (Q61996269) but I don't see what is wrong...).

@Laddo: I'm not a linguist but this is matter is historically and socially a bit more complicated. This region (Poland, Russia, Ukraine) is a kind of melting pot where for centuries people mixed and changed their places. It was a norm that Polish names were transcribed into Cyrillic script, and for Russians and Ukrainians who had settled in Poland had their names always written in Latin script. It might be that a name has just two modes of writing and that these are not necessarily different and separate. For example names ending in -ski -ska -wicz are regarded to be of Polish origin. Yeah, there are many cases where the exact spelling (including weather the name is written with Latin or Cyrillic script) cannot be determined, but I think during the last, let’s say, millennium, most people wrote their names using either script. By the way, the same issue stands for the western and southern parts of Europe, just the problematic times ended a few centuries earlier: for example, Charles I of Hungary (Q213061) was born as Caroberto, wrote his name as Carolvs, maybe also as Carolus, in Latin, and is named as Károly in Hungarian-language sources. His name, according to Wikidata, is Charles. But many non-royal people also latinized their names, like Descartes / Cartesius. @OSeveno: This tool does never simply not allow merging items, it always produces a helpful error message—in this case “The two items cannot be merged because one of them links to the other using the properties: P180”. @Yotwen: In contrast, this gadget for all people. You don’t have to do anything with the source code, just tick the first checkbox on Preferences § Gadgets. @Mbch331: I just noticed this discussion and found out why persistent settings don’t work since a while. After some debugging, I found that mw.storage.get() always returns string, so comparison with boolean will always return inequality. Either it should be compared with string, or use mw.storage.setObject()/getObject() with only one local storage element for the whole gadget. I removed this statement of property 361. It was false statement since new name of this art museum does not make it part of itself (art museum with old name). After this removal merging was possible. Incomplete merge due to edit conflict

I tried to merge Louis Boisgibault (Q57698909) and Louis Boisgibault (Q23959694). During the merge I got an edit conflict (which was because it was still saving alias changes I did) and when I continued, the merge was "completed". However the new data wasn't added, while the old data was removed. I rolled back the merge on Q57698909 and redid the merge now everything went well. Also, if there is a minor difference in the definition of lemma/lexical category, the merge doesn't go through and stays stuck there too. A manual merge displays a corresponding error message. @Ivan A. Krestinin: Fixed. The Norwegian Wikipedia sitelink was duplicated on Q86222035, so the sitelinks on Q25034751 couldn't be edited. I don't know how this thingy works. There are two "Aziza" female given names; which is wrong from the outset. OTOH, only Catalan WP has a "name" article with that name while the other WPs speak about African mythology. Sometimes people use this tool to merge some of the above and this should indeed be done. Most frequently however it shouldn't.

Maybe we could add a special confirm screen or a checkbox when the tool detects a merger of items with the following P31 values:

• Wikimedia disambiguation page (Q4167410) (if both are not disambiguations)
• given name (Q202444), male given name (Q12308941), female given name (Q11879590), unisex given name (Q3409032), family name (Q101352) (for any merger)

Eventually, we might identify other combinations are generally to be avoided.
