Notified participants of WikiProject Duplicates Hi all! I have been merging duplicate items for many years and of course one of the most difficult cases of merge is when the each of the two items regarding the same topic contains a X.wikipedia article regarding that topic. In these cases merging the duplicate X.wikipedia articles is a necessary precondition for merging the duplicate items. Of course for me as an Italian some merge-cases (e.g. Romance languages) are easier to be dealt with than others (e.g. non-Latin script languages). I usually follow two strategies: either I try to merge myself the articles, also when I don't know the language (with the help of Google Translate) - this of course might have some drawbacks; or I ask some user speaking the language, sometimes the person who created one or the other article, sometimes users of Wikidata that I know being speakers of that language - but it might happen that no one answers my request. In rare cases I am unfortunately not able to apply neither of these two methods and the duplication remains.

So I have had the following idea: we could create a subpage of this project, Wikidata:WikiProject Duplicates/Wikipedia mergers (you can propose better titles, of course), with a simple language table: users from Wikidata or from Wikipedias can add themselves to this table in order to give their availability to receive reports from other users regarding articles to be merged in a X.wikipedia. What do you think? --Epìdosis 11:38, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Since duplicates also affect data quality, also

That sounds like a good idea. How do the cases to solve and the native speakers get together? Watchlist? Pinging? But sounds like a good idea! --15:11, 24 December 2021 (UTC) Marsupium (talk) 15:11, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Marsupium: My idea is that the table should serve merely as a collector of user names; the users needing to have pages merged consult the table, find (hopefully) a user available for that Wikipedia and write them in their talk page. --Epìdosis 16:30, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a good idea! Q.Zanden questions? 15:17, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
But I have to add, at the participants page of this project, the users also provided their best three languages, so what would be the difference? Not having to participate on this project, but only be an active merger? Q.Zanden questions? 15:20, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@QZanden: Tendentially yes. I am also not sure that being member of this project implies that a user would be available for merging article in the Wikipedias whose languages he speaks; probably yes, but not sure, because in fact that activity is (mainly) on Wikipedia and not on Wikidata. An apposite liste could probably provide a more specific list of users interested in merging articles on Wikipedias, I hope. --Epìdosis 15:28, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
 Support That is a good point, I support the creation. Q.Zanden questions? 17:31, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Marsupium, QZanden: OK, I have created Wikidata:WikiProject Duplicates/Wikipedia mergers. Feel free to add yourself to the list! --Epìdosis 18:59, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

QuickStatements bug[edit]

Hello, it looks like QuickStatements is creating lots of duplicate items (including sitelinks), and these over 200 merges (including numerous triplicates, at least two quadruplicates and even a quintuplicate) were just the ones created by one batch of @Edoderoo. Would be great to have some tool to semi-automatically find and confirm duplicates from a given list of items, since this was quite tedious. And for the time being, I suggest to avoid creating items with QuickStatements wherever possible. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 19:25, 4 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
