Deviation from proposal[edit]

How this property is being used differs a lot from the proposal that was approved (which especially can be seen in the examples from back then), but there has never been any discussion on this talk page about those changes. Should we revert back to how it was intended to be used or can anyone document which changes that have been made and why? Ainali (talk) 22:45, 13 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Explain what the problem is. Its just an external identifier with an unique id at the external system. The problem I feel is the communication with the external system Alvin see T226099 and that e.g. user LittleGun dont think its worth linking from sv:Wikipedia see discussion. I created a tweet and asked if Alvin/ Uppsala Uni Lib are interested in being an external identifier in Wikidata... FYI I created a proposal for Arken. Interesting article about the "relation" Arken/Alvin maybe Arken is faster moving with a clear vision?!?!?

I wrote down some lesson learned after > 600 000 edits on Wikidata and connected > 10 external sources

The main problem is that the changes are undocumented and someone trying to figure out why it is not as voted on is stranded and unsure if the changes should be reverted or if the property actually got improved. It's not the changes per se that I am arguing here, it's the lack of collaboration in the process. If the changes can be argued for and documented here it might be alright, but right now, that knowledge is hidden from the community. Ainali (talk) 21:54, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
"Documentation"
  • examples P6821#P1855
  • T225522 more examples
  • Issues were we need to get some kind of letter of intent from the Albin portal Task T226099
  • another wish that the Alvin portal get better metadata for "typed species" see T236310
  • my opinion of best practice for being a "mature external" Wikidata property link
The main argument that we dont create new properties for person places.... is that its not scaling... if we had Wikidata as an external identifier then we needed a new property for every new type of instance of (P31) created so its better doing as in the Alvin case.. and that the external identifier has an "unique value", if its a number or a text string with a number is a non issue in my opinion. As said earlier it would be good if Alvim shared EPIC and backlog link then we could better design Wikidata....

This might be on the right track, but it is mainly the reasons, the arguments for the change, that needs to be documented here (not on Phabricator). If Wikidata allowed custom edit summaries, perhaps the links to the statements would enlighten someone, but as of now, we can only see what changed, not why.
