Wikidata:WikiProject Campsites
This project has the goal of collecting as many public campsites and shelters as possible and keep them up to date.
It began in 2020 when so9q from Sweden inspired by the hiking culture in Sweden wanted to make a map with shelters and was surprised to see that many exist but few have free culture pictures or descriptions of features.
The vision is to have such s good model for the data on shelters that it is possible for data consumers to give recommendations about routing and what to bring based on what features the shelters have. Also by mapping the area of the plank floors we can estimate how many can sleep at the time. An app with real time data about visitors could also be created if congestion becomes a problem.
Some places in Sweden now have congestion issues in hiking shelters, and in DK you have to book in advance to use a shelter.
You are very welcome to join the project.
Currently there are less than 1000 campsites and shelters in WD and you can help by adding your favorites or asking others to join and do the same.
Happy hunting!
Model
[edit]- campsite: schema, example, example with firepit.
- shelter: schema, example cottage example lean-to shelter
We are unsure how to best model the firepits. Maybe they don't need their own item?
- firepit: schema, example / see test EntitySchema:E408
- barbecue area: schema, example,
Example of private campsite with lean-to shelters. The utility of this is debatable. Do you think we should delete it?
The model for the data can be viewed with reasonator:
- https://reasonator.toolforge.org/?&q=1797440 -> subclass of
- https://reasonator.toolforge.org/?&q=832778 -> subclass of (currently the 2 last ones in the list).
Validation according to Entity Schema
[edit]See
- notebook for validating all shelters in Sweden in PAWS
- notebook for validating all campsites in Sweden in PAWS
These notebooks use entityshape which has a non-complete implementation of ShEx, but it's a start.
Properties
[edit]- image (P18) is nice, but it does not say what the photo contains. Therefore you should also use the following properties whenever possible:
image of frontside (P7418) view (P8517) winter view (P5252) nighttime view (P3451) image of backside (P7417)
Suggested
[edit]- floor area - under discussion. Here is an object that need it.
- Wikidata:Property proposal/Naturvårdsverket Amenity ID - done. Needed to import campsites from Naturvårdsveket in Sweden
- Wikidata:Property proposal/provisions - not done, alternatives suggested. --So9q (talk) 13:46, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

[edit]Mobile support
[edit]Data collection
[edit]To effectively collect information about the campsites of the world we need good tools. A mobile app for creation of new items and uploading photos and inserting them in the item would be really nice. As of September 2020 no such tool exist.
- See this issue requesting the Commons App to support item creation in addition to uploading to Commons
Data consumption
[edit]All data that is spread from Wikidata -> OSM eventually find it's way into hundreds of data consumers products.
If you want to consume the data directly you can extract all relevant data to your liking.
Suggested workflow
[edit]- Go to a shelter/campsite
- Take photos front/inside/view/firepit/toilet with coordinates
- Upload to wikimedia commons using the Android commons app or mobile browser
- Pick up a PC (or do it in your mobile browser if you are brave) and go to the location in https://wikishootme.toolforge.org/
- log in to wikishootme
- Create a new campsite item based on one of the photos
- Fill in the item manually and link the photos to the relevant properties (image/front/inside/view/backside/winter view)
- Validate the item using https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Teester/EntityShape.js and https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/EntitySchema:E376
