I'm REALLY sorry for destroying the template but I didn't know where/how to else ask for help. I'm an admin at SqWiki and I help maintain the CS1 module. Working with the module means working with its long list of categories a lot and every once in a while I have to do changes to them. When everything is done, I tend to link everything to Wikidata, taking close notice to link everything to EnWiki given that that's usually the "starting point" for module CS1 as a whole and the documentation for fixing errors is better there than everywhere else. Lately I'm having problems linking these categories together. They either appear linked but the link works only on one side, for example, you can go from SqWiki to EnWiki but not vice versa, or they can't be linked because the link exists to other old, deleted categories. I was (and to a certain point, still am) sure that these kind of problems tend to solve themselves out as time passes because they're usually technical glitches on caches but for some categories this problem has persisted for many months now, if I'm not wrong. So I wanted to ask somewhere for help. Should I just wait for these problems to be sorted out by themselves? I can provide specific links to categories if that's needed. We're talking about subcategories of these category here. @WieWachtAmRhein: de:Grünspan cannot be added to verdigris (Q2351119), because de.wiki page is a disambig that should be placed in separate item in WD that have instance of (P31)Wikimedia disambiguation page (Q4167410) (just like now). de:Kupfer(II)-acetat cannot be added to verdigris (Q2351119), because it is already in copper(II) acetate (Q421854) which is correct, because verdigris (Q2351119) is not about a specific chemical compound – verdigris may refer to at least a few similar chemical compounds or a mixture of such compounds. @He3nry: Sprite (it's a correct word) is more similar to a fairy than a ghost. Familiar is usually beneficial to the "owner" and AFAIK is attached to the owner, not to the house. Today I was trying to add an english version to spanish article Cerveza Artesanal, and then correct the Deutsch one, which links to the idiomatic "Craft Beer" instead of the local "Mikrobrauerei". Irrespective of the specific case, which ought to be discussed in the respective talk page, I have issues with whatever rule is enforced in the system that prohibits a one to many relationship between articles. The error message involved and an explanation follow:

"Site link enwiki:Craft brewery and microbrewery is already used by item Q5487333. Perhaps the items should be merged. Ask at d:Wikidata:Interwiki conflicts if you believe that they should not be merged."

Multiple articles in one language can correspond to a single article in another language, for example Bible, New testament and Old testament might be separate articles in the Italian wikipedia, but they might be merged in a smaller arabic wikipedia. In this case it would be reasonable to have Bible, New testament and old testament link to the arabic bible article. This was always possible when translations were tagged in the wikipedia articles themselves. So this is a regression bug introduced by the wikidata migration.

This is a good faith attempt to resolve the issue. If this issue is resolved or satisfactorily explained, I will try to solve it at the individual Wikipedia layer (English and spanish), so that it stops depending on wikipedia to show article versions in other languages. I have looked at most leads and contents of the articles collected by both items, and I agree with Milan Ker. (The sets of represented wp's are disjoint.) Factually, there are a number of very closely related subjects, which actually all the articles seem to treat: The method (often an algorithm) for producing (pseudo or actual) random numbers, and a programme or hardware implementing this; and, formally, the production of random numbers in se. However, the latter is less clearly treated than the two former items, although technically that should be "the generation". Often, articles in both items explicitly state that they treat both the methods and the instruments for implementing them. Many, including the enwp article, refer to the English abbreviation RNG for "Random number generator"; however, since a few months, the enwp article starts by claiming that this is the abbreviation of "Random number generation" (a change explicitly done as an adaption to the article title, here).

However, there was a proposal a year ago to move w:Random number generation to w:Random number generator, which did not collect sufficiently large support; see w:Talk:Random number generation/Archive 1#Requested move 7 April 2019. Two editors argued that "Random number generation" be a considerably more general term (covering e. g. a person flipping coins), and that therefore the "generation" name should be kept, and some corresponding additions be made to the article. Seemingly, no noticeable such additions have been made, though. There was and is one sentence referring to these more general methods:

The earliest methods for generating random numbers, such as dice, coin flipping and roulette wheels, are still used today, mainly in games and gambling as they tend to be too slow for most applications in statistics and cryptography.

However, there are similar sentences also in Q61722412 articles, such as w:sv:Slumptalsgenerator. Thus, I do not find any substantial reason not to merge the items.

Cebuano wiki is full of tiny pages like this one https://ceb.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mer_de_Beaufort_(dagat_sa_Kanada,_Yukon), presumably created by a bot (Lsjbot). I've seen this many times: Cebuano has very low notability and page content criteria compared to other wikis, so very often it stays apart from the other wikis and precludes WD items from being merged. I'm not sure WHY one would even think that the Beaufort Sea belongs to one province of Canada. Note: if you check the Geonames links at Q131274#P1566, you'll see that Geonames also has many records for that sea (Alaska, various Canadian provinces, international waters): I think those Geonames records should be merged. After contemplating this, I think tap (Q656656) is only for releasing fluids/gases from a container where upon opening a tap, the fluid/gas flows on its own (so e.g. a pump is not a tap). So a tap (Q656656) is a subclass of valve (Q208443). So there is a giant mess in the articles related to weaving. Articles overlap, link to wrong Wikidata items, confuse foreign terms, etc. For example the Polish article about heddle says the English term for it is "shedding device". But there already is a plwiki page describing a shedding mechanism. The article also makes it seem like it's about the part that holds heddles and it only mentions heddles in passing. But another article gives these two as synonyms.

It will be hard to fix this because you need to know both foreign languages and also have a knowledge of weaving and loom parts. I was specifically looking at English, Polish, German and Czech labels and articles. There's a mixup of terms from various languages which mean different things, even if they sound similar. For example in English semolina means fine groats (I think so), but in Polish grys/grysik means fine groats, while semolina means fine groats from durum wheat. Similarly, Esperanto makes a distinction between semolo and grio, though I don't understand the difference between them. And couscous seems to me to be the same as semolina from durum wheat, so that adds another item to the mix. So it's a mess and it looks like there needs to be a general reshuffle of labels, Wikipedia links and statements. Seems like we'll need some speakers of other languages to sort it out because Google Translate randomly mixes terms. (E.g. it confuses semolina, grys, grain, and soft wheat farina (kasza manna) which makes the translations unreliable.) There are several similar items for various types of "city parts" or "municipal parts", and it is difficult to determine their exact distinctions and equivalents in different languages and administrative systems. Interwikis are thus very random and chaotic.

However, it would be appropriate to concentrate to one item the names that are historically derived from medieval "quartale". Currently:

The bigger problem will be to typologize those remaining links from both items, whether it is possible to merge them into one item or to sort them into several items (one aspect is etymological, the other aspect is specific local usage, especially when more levels of division are used). @ŠJů: Please consider that names which are almost identical and have the same etymology, can still have different meanings in various languages. Making the split based solely on names might not be a good idea.

Additionally, for example "quarter" and "neighborhood" have the Polish labels "część miasta" ("part of a city/town") and "część miejscowości" ("part of a human settlement/municipality"), but a direct translation of English labels would respectively be "kwartał zabudowy" (or just "kwartał") and "sąsiedztwo". To see if the current labels fit better than the direct translations, we would have to look at dictionaries (especially domain-specific ones), legislation, etc. The desired end state is to have labels and Wikipedia articles grouped into Qitems based on their exact meaning, not etymology. --192.198.151.52 18:42, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Per discussion on Stack Exchange, it seems to me that de:Letten (Gestein) (and possibly also cs:lupek, although my Czech isn't good enough to tell for sure) is not an appropriate sitelink for fire clay (Q2523928). Both sitelinks were added to the item in September 2020 by an anonymous editor, who also made a bunch of property changes that, at least at a glance, seem valid to me — they basically changed the item from a type of stoneware made of clay into a type of clay used for making stoneware. The sitelinks in question, however, seem to describe something different; Letten, at least, is described on Wikipedia as a type of silty clay that's not particular good for making ceramics of any kind.

This might be just a simple item split, but I've never edited Wikidata before and this kind of feels like jumping into the deep end. Also, I'm not familiar enough with either geology, ceramics or the German language to really be sure what the new Wikidata item for Letten should look like — nor, for that matter, whether lupek describes the same concept as Letten or not. The problem happens within the said Qs in the realm of the Spanish Wikipedia. This problem has arisen during work we are performing within the completion of the 10,000 articles every Wikipedia should have.

Currently Q538 english language article link is to the "Insular Oceania" article , and Q55643 english language article link is to the "Oceania" article. BUT in fact in english Wikipedia "Insular Oceania" is just a REDIRECTION to the article "Oceania"

The problem happens when I try to replicate the same model of links within the Spanish wikipedia.

Currently Q538 spanish language article link is to the "Oceanía" article, and for Q55643 there is no link provided to an spanish language article. I have created a spanish article called "Australia and Oceanía" (that is the official name of Q538), and in it just placed a REDIRECT to the spanish article "Oceanía", the problem is that when I try to provide a link for Q55643 to a spanish wikipedia article it would reject the insertion of the article "Australia y Oceanía" !!!

Would appreciate very much if you could process this request, and provide an exception.

Scientists who study frogs keep revising the scientific names every two years. A while back, they used DNA analysis to find that many frogs that had been placed in Hyla or Hypsiboas should be in Boana. In 2017, scientists decided that Hypsiboas fuente would no longer be recognized. The best I can tell is that HF is a population (not a subspecies) of Boana xerophylla. But Wikispecies has two entries. Per Amphibian Species of the World, "Fuente's Powakka Treefrog (Hyla fuentei [no longer recognized]: Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 55)." The scientist have been revising things so much over the past ten years that I can't tell for sure. Currently Q1139762 english language article link is to the "Empire Kanem-Bonu" article, and Q1537016 english language article link is to the "Empire Kanem" article. BUT in fact in english Wikipedia "Empire Kanem" is just a REDIRECTION to the article "Empire Kanem-Bonu"

The problem happens when I try to replicate the same model of links that work in English wikipedia within the Spanish wikipedia.

Currently Q1139762 spanish language article link is to the "Imperio Kanem-Bonu" article, and for Q1537016 there is no link provided to an Spanish language article. I have created a spanish article called "Imperio Kanem" (that is the official name of Q1537016), and in it just placed a REDIRECT to the Spanish article "Imperio Kanem-Bonu", the problem is that when I try to provide a link for Q1537016 to a spanish wikipedia article it would reject the insertion of the article "Imperio Kanem" !!

Both of these identifiers refer to the term "ice pack" and ought to be merged. However, they refer to two slightly different versions of ice packs in the Dutch language, which stops them from being merged without conflicts.

Q493034 uses the term Koelelement (cooling element) and refers to both CPU coolers as well as gel-filled ice packs for household use.
Q1146414 uses the term IJszak (ice bag) and also refers to gel (or ice) filled ice packs, but this time for medical use.

My knowledge of Dutch is not good enough to figure out if one term incorporates the other and/or how to merge the two articles together, so I'm filing this Interwiki conflict instead.

I also noted that while the German article for Q493034 uses the term Kühlakku / Kühlelement (cooling element), there's another German article for Kältepack (cooling pack), which refers to an endothermic cold pack for medical use. In English, Railway points are synonymous with railway switches, as evidenced that the link for Q1311696 in en-wiki redirects to the same article linked in Q82818 titled en:Railroad switch. There is some quibbling between USA and UK/Commonwealth usage, in that points can more specifically refer to the blades that move, while in US usage switch can refer to the blades as well as the whole assembly, but that's an aside.

The problem here is that some of the Q1311696 interwiki links in (fr, en, sp, gl) are to articles similar to Railway switch, but others (de, it, nl) are to articles about a different concept, called a "railway node" (definition here) in English. It should be noted that "railway node" does not have its own en-wiki article yet, although I confirmed that it does appear in English articles about railroad topics, and red-linked it. I can't figure out scope of some overlapping categories in Wikipedia projects. There may be different scope of these two set of categories, however, I think that at least some of them overlap or are in the wrong item. Especially, I don't see any difference between two Commons categories. In WD we have class of chemical entities with similar applications or functions (Q56256173) and statements regarding application (use) and function of chemical compounds are added using two properties (has use (P366) = intentional use of a chemical compound in a certain application and subject has role (P2868) = function of a chemical compound in a certain system regardless of its possible intentional use; in some cases the boundary between these concepts is not well defined, but it works most of the time, e.g. a compound may have subject has role (P2868) = acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, but has use (P366) = chemical warfare agent). However, in these categories I see that probably most of them has not well defined distinction between use and application and I don't see any criteria for such classification. I'm struggling to differentiate these 2 sculptures of the same subject in the same city. There's this one (Commons) in Centro, Guadalajara, and this one (Commons) at Centro's Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres. Can someone help make sure there's only one Wikidata entry for each and confirms there's no conflict?

You mention about two Qitems numbers that shouldn’t be merged, one being about a specific mythological character, the other being a list of articles or potential articles (which we use to call a disambiguation page). Neither these are bound to other wikis (just the German wiki), so maybe you want to refer to a third or maybe even a fourth Qitem that should bind with other languages wikis? After a search on Wikidata, I’ve found the third Qitem Hyperes (Q4138721).
I guess that WP:RU article should be linked to the WP:DE article described by Hyperes (Q21548810), while WP:EN & WP:SH articles should somehow be bound to the German disambiguation page (Q110323725).
Is that what you meant?

I guess you made a mistake during copy-paste process, given the same Qitem number is mentionned twice (so by very nature it’s the same park, and no action should be done to merge a Qitem with itself 😉 … sorry about the joke).
When searching for "Lucayen" I just find two Qitems, one about the park (the Qitem you’ve mentionned twice) & the other about the Lucayan people, which should never be merged together!
