Potato[edit]

I think "graphem" and "writing system" are different concepts. We should distinguish the difference between sinograms (Q8201) (writing system, instance of logographic writing system (Q3953107)) and sinogram (Q53764738) (character, subclass of logogram (Q138659)). Hi! en:Subscription (finance) should not be at Q322948, en:Subscription business model should be there instead. The description (in English) is also wrong. Most other languages in Q322948 that I can tell point to the business model, not the financial term. --Jfsamper (talk) 02:46, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This appears to be the same thing.--Shisma (talk) 19:30, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

At first glance, it appears to be two separate but related concepts in Czech: Sníženina vs. Proláklina. I know nothing of Czech, but relying on Google translation, Sníženina seems to relate to a general vertically-concave shape, while Proláklina relates to a specific landform. Proláklina may also specifically imply negative elevations, which would make it slightly different to English "depression", which is relative to the surrounding landscape rather than sea level. Again, I have exactly zero proficiency in Czech, but it seems to me Wikidata would lose something in that language if we merged these two items. — Ipoellet (talk) 20:35, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Rigadoun, Varlaam: can you please explain why? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 10:16, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, you're right. I think the es pages need to be merged, since they have virtually the same content except for their transliteration of the English word "quart." quart (Q1058120) should really have a description like "unit of volume, with various definitions," should be a subclass of (P279) (not instance of (P31)) units of volume, and that then has part(s) (P527) for the specific measures of the U.S. dry, U.S. liquid, Imperial, Winchester, etc. (I don't think any of these exist yet, but those could have conversion to SI unit (P2370).) The exception would be the French page, which in addition to those volume units has some other dimensions; really it should be separate and have this page as a subclass. @Okkn:? --49.75.175.51 22:06, 16 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
w:ja:建築 is exactly same as w:construction, but w:ja:施工 is a little different. "施" means "to perform" and "工" means "engineering works". Both "建設" and "施工" can be verbs in Japanese, and objects of "建設(する)" are buildings or other structures, but those of "施工(する)" are construction plans or works. So they can't be merged. --Okkn (talk) 06:14, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Okkn: - thank you! However, en:Construction is linked to ja:建設 (construction (Q385378)), not to ja:建築. 建築 is linked to en:Architecture (architecture (Q12271)). Are those links correct? Also, do you think it would be fair to represent 施工 in English as "engineering profession"? Or perhaps "action of engineering design" ("to engineer")? — Ipoellet (talk) 02:02, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Object of "工事(する)" is a road, a tunnel, a river, etc. "建設(する)" and "建築(する)" are usually used when we newly build something, but "工事(する)" is usually used when mending or repairing infrastructures.
@Ipoellet: Current links (en:Construction to ja:建設 and en:Architecture to ja:建築) seem OK to me. Japanese "建築" also has the meanings of both "process" and its "product". "建設(する)" just means "to build", but "建築(する)" contains a strong nuance of designing, in addition to building.
"施工" doesn't refer to the profession, but only refer to the action. --Okkn (talk) 09:15, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Well, if Google translates "建設" correctly back into German ("Bau"), I would say, it matches neither nor. But then again, you can never trust Google's translations, can you. "Bauausführung" refers only to buildings (houses, etc.) and is a certain phase in the process of creating a building, which is the actual manual labor on the real estate site. "Konstruieren (Technik)" is an abstract term and describes the planning on the drawboard of any technical item. Hope that helps. --AchimP (talk) 10:48, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Solar Hijri calendar (Q950135)/Iranian calendar (Q180311)[edit]

Items involved: Q950135Talk, Q180311Talk Status:    not resolved

There are a lot of incorrect wiki links here. For instance, the fr wiki article Calendrier Persan is about the Solar Hijri calendar exclusively, whereas the en wiki Persian Calendars article includes other historical calendars, and they're both on the same item. However I suspect a large number of these articles currently linked to the "multiple calendars" item on with the en wiki article are actually about the Solar one so it might be easier to do the merge the other way around. I'm going to start working on it but thought I'd put a notice here as I might not finish. Mvolz (talk) 10:23, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

On second thought, I think the easiest thing to do is to first move out the few articles about Iranian calendars to their own item, then merge these two items automatically. This reduces the amount of manual work that has to be done. Mvolz (talk) 10:32, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

fast attack craft (Q719226)/e-boat (Q11215470)/torpedo boat (Q324233)/motor torpedo boat (Q1630695)/torpedo-boat destroyer (Q16220775)[edit]

Items involved: Q719226Talk, Q11215470Talk, Q324233Talk, Q1630695Talk, Q16220775Talk Status:    not resolved

This is a tangled mess of conflicts mostly created by inconsistent naming in different languages.

German
The german article de:Schnellboot is about fast attack craft (Q719226) which is a ship type. However, in the rest of the world "Schnellboot" refers to e-boat (Q11215470) which is a specific class (or classes) of torpedo armed fast attack craft made by Lürssen for the Kriegsmarine in the 1930's and 1940's. German Wikipedia does not have any article about those boats and I don't think there is a term for them in german. I have only seen them called "Schnellboote der Kriegsmarine".
English
The other way around. The english article en:Motor Torpedo Boat is about specific class of British torpedo armed fast attack craft. In most other countries the term "Motor Torpedo Boat" is a more general term that includes British MTB's, US PT-boats, italian MAS-boats etc.
Swedish
There is no term for "Fast attack craft" in swedish. A torpedo armed FAC is "torpedbåt" and a missile armed FAC is "robotbåt". The term "torpedbåt" is also used for the 19th century steam powered torpedo boat (Q324233). The prefix "motor" (as in "motortorpedbåt") is reserved for light vessels with a planing (non-displacing hull). This corresponds to the previous point.
Russian
In russian (as well as ukrainian an bulgarian I think) the article ru:Торпедный катер corresponds to torpedo boat (Q324233). However, this item is linked to ru:Миноносец which I think corresponds to torpedo-boat destroyer (Q16220775).

How can this be untangled?
I think fast attack craft (Q719226) should be the most general item with subitems for gun-, torpedo-, and missile armed FACs. torpedo-boat destroyer (Q16220775) and torpedo boat (Q324233) should be reserved for the 19th century steam powered warships. Then we have to come up with a way to separate the MTB "type" from the MTB "class". Any ideas?

The Settlers III (Q2579674)/The Settlers (Q1163239)[edit]

Items involved: Q2579674Talk, Q1163239Talk Status:    not resolved

English (and some other language wikipedias) have The Settlers III as an independent article. On German Wikipedia, all Settlers games are handled in the main "Die Siedler" article with extensive subsections. Pointing to the German series article fails for the obvious reason that the English series article already points to that as it's German counterpart. Pointing to a subsection is apparently not possible using Wikidata as it complains about the very same duplication problem.

tl;dr In English Wikipedia there's The Settlers and The Settlers III, in German Wikipedia there's only Die Siedler and Die Siedler#Die Siedler III, but no standalone article. --Mastacheata (talk) 21:30, 26 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

JoJo's Venture (Q3179359)/JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Q2757037)[edit]

Items involved: Q3179359Talk, Q2757037Talk Status:    not resolved

In French, the 1998 (original release, 1999 was the updated release, so JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Q2757037) is incorrect there) game is listed as being associated with JoJo's Venture (Q3179359). In English and most other languages, the game is represented as JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Q2757037)). The [1](French wiki article) is listed as the respective wiki article for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Q2757037), which isn't entirely incorrect (Heritage for the Future is an updated version of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, per the intro paragraph of the English wiki page). I'm not sure exactly how this should be resolved, but I planned to suggest merging JoJo's Venture (Q3179359) into JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Q2757037) after changing what the French wiki article points to. Given that the French Wikipedia has separate articles for the original/updated game whereas the other Wikipedias have only one article, I think the French Wikipedia would probably need modifying. --Nicereddy (talk) 22:09, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
