Research Bot should have bot flag!?

Hi - Research Bot is overwhelming my recent changes feed with its edits; can you request a bot flag for it so we can filter these out as bot edits? Also presumably it should have gone through a bot request at some point anyway? ArthurPSmith (talk) 19:02, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

@ArthurPSmith: I am using the account more like a flood account than a real bot, but the bot request sits here and resulted in the account being added to the group of bot users. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 20:43, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
You have to set the bot flag on each edit with bot=1, see the api reference. Multichill (talk) 21:24, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
Oh maybe that doesn't work when using Quickstatements? ArthurPSmith (talk) 22:06, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
Perhaps. Maybe it should get a flood flag instead? --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 23:00, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
At Help:QuickStatements, it is stated that "there is no way for users using bot accounts to mark their edits as bot edit." I am now looking into Wikidata:Flooders to see whether that is an option. Daniel Mietchen (talk) 19:24, 22 January 2023 (UTC)

Bot appearing on human filter

For special changes, this bot is appearing on the filter Human (No bot) which is completely clogging up the recent changes. Hope this gets fixed. MasterMatt12 (talk) 18:07, 22 January 2023 (UTC)

@MasterMatt12: Thanks for reporting. As a temporary fix, I stopped the batches that are currently lined up. Not sure yet how to address this in the longer term. Daniel Mietchen (talk) 18:49, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
Alright, sounds good. MasterMatt12 (talk) 20:58, 22 January 2023 (UTC)

Duplicate papers

Hi Daniel,

there are many papers, which are duplicated in their content, but have different DOIs like Pure Functions in C. Why shall we not merge them? Jackie Bensberg (talk) 20:29, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi Jackie, I agree that having items like Pure Functions in C: A Small Keyword for Automatic Parallelization (Q59202480) and Pure Functions in C: A Small Keyword for Automatic Parallelization (Q118104895) just sit there and not being connected is not ideal, so I provisionally linked them via has edition or translation (P747) and edition or translation of (P629), which is probably not a long-term solution either. Yes, we should think about how to address this systemically, including for things like preprint (or even preprint versions) versus "final" paper, or joint editorials in multiple journals etc. However, merging the items at this stage is not a solution, since besides identifiers like DOI (P356), other metadata also differ, like publication date (P577), published in (P1433), volume (P478), issue (P433), page(s) (P304) and potentially others, including sometimes even author name string (P2093)/ author (P50) or title (P1476). --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 21:08, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

Short names of organisms

Hi Daniel - your User:Research Bot has added short name (P1813) to all species, 'based on heuristic – inferred from taxon name'. This is good, but unfortunately, they have all been tagged as being '(English)' language, which is wrong. As they are based on the scientific names, they should be tagged '(Latin)', or better, '(Scientific)' if such a tag exists. Could this be remedied? Thanks! - MPF (talk) 11:09, 25 May 2023 (UTC)

@MPF: Thanks for thinking along. Latin would not work in many cases, and we do not have anything along the lines of 'scientific', but perhaps 'multilanguage' could work, e.g. as per this edit. How do you see that? I am also exploring ways in which lexemes could be helpful here. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 20:29, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
Why did you add them at all? --Succu (talk) 20:35, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
Thanks! Yes, 'multilanguage' would certainly be OK, as they are relevant in all languages. @Succu: they are in widespread use in scientific literature as subsequent mentions in papers (first mention in a paper, Genus species, all subsequent mentions, G. species); some have entered widely into general usage, such as E. coli for Escherichia coli (Q25419). So definitely worthy of inclusion. - MPF (talk) 21:03, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
(edit conflict) @Succu: Such abbreviated species names are frequently used both on Wikidata (e.g. in items about papers) and beyond (e.g. on Commons file pages), and in a good number of cases, the corresponding species are not indicated. With the short names tagged, it becomes easier to match those strings to species and add the appropriate tags, or to catalog and quantify the diversity (e.g. see here for a query that lists species abbreviated as "C. elegans"). --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 21:12, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
Sample edits. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 21:19, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
Excellent, thanks! Have you had any policy over names beginning with diphthongs derived from single Greek letters (Ch from Greek χ, Ph from Greek φ, Ps from Greek ψ, etc.)? Technically their short names should use the diphthong and not the single first letter, thus, Ch. lawsoniana for Chamaecyparis lawsoniana (Q161360), Ph. trochilus for Willow Warbler (Q27239) and Ps. menziesii for Pseudotsuga menziesii (Q156687), but this is observed in the breach far more often than done correctly in the great majority of scientific papers. - MPF (talk) 13:22, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
@MPF: I have followed the common practice (at least in the English-language literature) to use the single first letter but am aware of the issue, and it is one of the reasons why I am looking into lexemes for modeling this out properly. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 22:18, 27 May 2023 (UTC)

Duplicate articles and incorrect dates

Hi @Daniel Mietchen, hope all is well with you.

I've come across some duplicate articles for Esakia (Q21386314) that were created by ResearchBot. The duplicates arose because this journal used to only have Handle ID (P1184) but now has DOI (P356) as well. Whatever code your bot uses to catch duplicates missed these and so created duplicate entries. Bit of an edge case, however I get the sense that a number of repositories have sene the light and are adding DOIs to their content, so this may be more of an issue going forward. In my own code I try and check whether ISSN, volume, and pages are unique before adding things, just to try and avoid these cases.

Mercifully the metadata that I'd added from scraping the respository pages was almost identical to what ResearchBot had added, so merging was straightforward - with one exception. ResearchBot added the wrong dates. This looks like a subtle bug, because the CrossRef metadata says issued seems to be correct for the digital version, but not the printed, which is often much older. The print date is in the metadata as published-print. For all the records I've merged I've deprecated the CrossRef date. Rdmpage (talk) 03:33, 16 June 2023 (UTC)

@Rdmpage: Thanks for catching and fixing the duplicates and for sharing the observation about the dates. This is a known issue that has yet to be fully addressed. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 13:27, 16 June 2023 (UTC)
